Os Picos de Europa são uma cadeia montanhosa no norte da Espanha, que faz parte da Cordilheira Cantábrica. A sua constituição geológica é predominantemente calcária.

The top of the cone-shaped Pico volcano in the Azores is a flat crater. Inside that crater is a small cone, kind of a miniature replica of the mother mountain, aptly named Piquinho, or small Pico, the top of which marks the highest point of the mountain, at 2351 m.

Los Picos de Europa presentan la mayor formación caliza de la Europa Atlántica, con importantes procesos cársticos, simas que llegan a más de 1.000 m, erosión glaciar muy patente y presencia de lagos. Entre sus riscos habita el rebeco, en los tupidos bosques los corzos, lobos y presencia ocasional de algún oso. En el Parque habitan más de 100 especies de aves, entre las que destacan el pito negro y el urogallo, y entre las grandes rapaces el buitre leonado y el águila real. Pero aquí hay mucho más que paisaje, hay siglos de historia escritos en los pueblos, en los valles, en las iglesias, en las cabañas de los puertos y en sus caminos.

Los Picos de Europa son un macizo montañoso localizado en el norte de España que pertenece a la parte central de la cordillera Cantábrica. Aunque no muy extenso, su cercanía al mar hace que sea pródigo en accidentes geográficos de gran interés. En la actualidad el parque nacional de los Picos de Europa constituye el segundo parque nacional más visitado de España, después del parque nacional del Teide (Tenerife).

 

Esta formación caliza se extiende por Cantabria, León y el Principado de Asturias, y en ella destacan sus alturas, en muchos casos por encima de los 2500 m, por lo cerca que se encuentran del mar Cantábrico, pues en su punto más septentrional apenas distan 15 kilómetros del mar.

Next day we drove to the other walk to the highest point on the island. This was the most spectacular walk I can ever remember, not difficult and paves virtually all the way. Particularly pleased with quick sketches of bird sightings for later identification.
