Basaltic boulders near coast. Criação Velha, Pico Island, Azores. (WWF ecoregion PA0403)
These boulders are the result of a former higher shore line. Vesicular basaltic lava beds have been broken up and reworked into rounded shapes. Hot gases created the bubbles in a cooling lava flow. Of interest is the layering of bubbles according to size. The boulder in the center measures about 50 cm across.

Pico do Arieiro, at 1,818 m high, is Madeira island's third highest peak. Most days, visitors can stand and look down on the clouds. The air is fresh and clear and the sun is very bright.
Otro de los atractivos son las cuevas excavadas en las rocas cuarcíticas, aunque hoy en día se encuentran parcialmente cegadas y bastante descuidadas, a las que no es recomendable acceder por seguridad.
Ellas son las responsables indirectas de muchas de las leyendas que ubicaban en su interior a los mouros, y en concreto a la Reina Lupa, que fue la que concedió a los discípulos de Santiago un sitio para enterrar al Apóstol, después de someterlos a las pruebas del toro bravo.
