Curbside pickup and home delivery are nothing new, but COVID-19 has increased their use enormously. We have been using Kroger grocery pickup since March. Before the pandemic, we always did our grocery shopping.

Pickup versions of the Mark 3 Transporter – the van version of which was called the Vanagon in the United States – are rare in this country, but they do exist. This extended-cab pickup at the 2009 All Aircooled Gathering in Flanders, New Jersey, a 1981 model, had been (still is?) in the service of Holberts Volkswagen in Warrington, Pennsylvania, serving the Philadelphia area since 1954. (Warrington is in nearby Bucks County.) This VW dealership is as much an institution in southeastern Pennsylvania as Gensinger Volkswagen is in northern New Jersey.
Power for the Vanagon and its commercial truck derivatives came from a two-liter aircooled, fuel-injected four-cylinder engine in 1981.
Volkswagen preferred to push a Rabbit-based pickup in America in the early eighties, but it was deemed too small for American tastes.
