Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells. --To Autumn. by John Keats

Today, Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute - HUPTI announced a partnership with Leo Cancer Care to develop an upright proton arc therapy treatment technique for cancer.
The technique will allow patients to stand or sit upright and, combined with an additional CT system, may better target tumors in patients.
Jefferson Lab is proud to contribute to these efforts by applying its nuclear physics and technology expertise to help pave the way for improvements in patient care.

She was a beauty--a gold 45 goddess for sure! A Gold 45 Goddess exalts the archetypal form of Athena--the Greek Goddess of wisdom, warfare, strategy, heroic endeavour, handicrafts and reason. A Gold 45 Goddess guards the beauty of dx4/dt=ic and embodies 45SURF's motto "Virtus, Honoris, et Actio Pro Veritas, Amor, et Bellus, (Strength, Honor, and Action for Truth, Love, and Beauty," and she stands ready to inspire and guide you along your epic, heroic journey into art and mythology. It is Athena who descends to call Telemachus to Adventure in the first book of Homer's Odyssey--to man up, find news of his true father Odysseus, and rid his home of the false suitors, and too, it is Athena who descends in the first book of Homer's Iliad, to calm the Rage of Achilles who is about to draw his sword so as to slay his commander who just seized Achilles' prize, thusly robbing Achilles of his Honor--the higher prize Achilles fought for. And now Athena descends once again, assuming the form of a Gold 45 Goddess, to inspire you along your epic journey of heroic endeavour.

Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics is a basic research centre dedicated to exploring the world around us at its most fundamental level. It began in the summer of 1999 when Mike Lazaridis, founder of Research in Motion and the innovator who was instrumental in launching the smart phone revolution, found himself in a position to help foster research and innovation in Canada by establishing a world-class institute devoted to theoretical physics.
Research
Since research operations began in the fall of 2001, the Institute has grown to include over 80 resident researchers who are involved in day-to-day operations. Additionally, the vigorous Visitor Program has enabled PI to host hundreds of international researchers each year for collaborations and workshops. The current groups involved with cross-disciplinary research include Condensed Matter, Cosmology & Gravitation, Particle Physics, Quantum Foundations, Quantum Gravity, Quantum Information Theory, Superstring Theory and related areas.
Training
Among activities that help develop future generations of scientists, is the innovative Perimeter Scholars International. This research training program exposes rising talent from around the world to the full spectrum of theoretical physics, bringing them rapidly to the leading edge of current research.
Outreach
In addition to the scientific operations, Perimeter Institute also shares the importance of basic research and the power of theoretical physics with the wider community. The award winning educational outreach team provides specifically crafted programs and educational resources for youth, teachers and members of the general public across Canada and beyond.
Funding
Perimeter Institute is an independent, non-profit, charitable organization focused on scientific research, training and educational outreach in theoretical physics. The Institute is funded through an innovative public-private partnership - uniting governments, individuals, corporations, and foundations in a shared enterprise to help advance scientific breakthroughs, nurture scientific talent, and share scientific discovery with the broader public.
Workplace
Perimeter Institute endeavors to foster an inclusive culture that embraces and celebrates the diversity of our organization. We are committed to providing a safe, comfortable, harassment-free working environment for all students, scientists, support staff and volunteers, regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, religion or place of origin. We have a zero tolerance policy towards any form of harassment, discrimination, or violence in the workplace. Trust and mutual respect are the basis of our community.
Perimeter has many collaboration areas where residents can sit, talk, and work. The glass panels just in front of the windows on the second floor are frosted — when you get close they become whiteboards! (Apparently if you don't give residents enough space to write they start writing on walls and other surfaces.)
This High Dynamic Range 360° panorama was stitched from 60 bracketed photographs with PTGUI Pro, tone-mapped with Photomatix, and touched up in Aperture.

Harwell Science and Innovation Centre, Oxfordshire.
This silver doughnut-shaped building, located in the Oxfordshire countryside near Didcot, is home to the Diamond Synchrotron, a huge scientific machine, half a kilometre in circumference, designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light.

Colored pencil and India ink on paper.
Part of a series attempting to depict artistically and aesthetically the different fields of physics. Trying to be scientifically accurate but not constrained to textbook figures or lists of equations. There is a beauty to the subject that is hard to see beyond the boring problems, mathematical tinkering, terminology, that one can get bogged down in. As a student I often found myself scrambling to pass exams and and turn in homework. Only long after I graduated and looked back at the basic equations did I really understand them and how much information they contained and how they so neatly described the world.
1. Mechanics
Maybe the most basic of the physics disciplines. Everyone starts with position, velocity, and acceleration. The ancient disciplines of geometry and algebra, and methods to measure time are the most basic tools. Integral calculus and its more fiendish twin, differential equations, allow prediction and analysis of motion at every infinitely small increment of time and space. Force - the description of the interplay between mass and acceleration was shown to be a general description of the change in inertial state. Planetary motions, air resistance, fluid pressure, etc... are all the same force that change the speed of of an object (if not in equilibrium that is). There is a beauty in this simple description. Prior to Newton it was thought that every force in nature had its own laws and explanation.
The concept of energy is a relatively recent development that is at once so simple but defies a simple explanation. What is energy exactly? We know it is conserved and is often extremely useful to determine the mechanical behavior of objects without having to deal with vectors.
LaGrangian, Hamiltonian, and Eulerian mechanics using generalized coordinates and forces are fascinating. As a student I always thought "so what?" because it seemed like a lot of work for the same answer using Newtonian mechanics. But as a fundamental explanation of motion it does more than describe the motion of objects but tells us why a particle moves the way it does in inherently linking motion to energy, which is finite in the universe and for which the universe miserly and mercilessly accounts for every joule. There are no freebies and not an Erg is wasted. LaGrangian mechanics and the principle of least action are interesting, but even more so when it comes to quantum mechanics, QED and string theory where classical mechanics doesn't describe the world adequately but where which the principles of energy still hold and allow us to describe the universe as it is and not as we see it.

I am working on several books on "epic photography," and I recently finished a related one titled: The Golden Number Ratio Principle: Why the Fibonacci Numbers Exalt Beauty and How to Create PHI Compositions in Art, Design, & Photography: An Artistic and Scientific Introduction to the Golden Mean . Message me on facebook for a free review copy!
www.facebook.com/goldennumberratio/
The Golden Ratio informs a lot of my art and photographic composition. The Golden Ratio also informs the design of the golden revolver on all the swimsuits and lingerie, as well as the 45surf logo! Not so long ago, I came up with the Golden Ratio Principle which describes why The Golden Ratio is so beautiful.
The Golden Number Ratio Principle: Dr. E’s Golden Ratio Principle: The golden ratio exalts beauty because the number is a characteristic of the mathematically and physically most efficient manners of growth and distribution, on both evolutionary and purely physical levels. The golden ratio ensures that the proportions and structure of that which came before provide the proportions and structure of that which comes after. Robust, ordered growth is naturally associated with health and beauty, and thus we evolved to perceive the golden ratio harmonies as inherently beautiful, as we saw and felt their presence in all vital growth and life—in the salient features and proportions of humans and nature alike, from the distribution of our facial features and bones to the arrangements of petals, leaves, and sunflowers seeds. As ratios between Fibonacci Numbers offer the closest whole-number approximations to the golden ratio, and as seeds, cells, leaves, bones, and other physical entities appear in whole numbers, the Fibonacci Numbers oft appear in nature’s elements as “growth’s numbers.” From the dawn of time, humanity sought to salute their gods in art and temples exalting the same proportion by which all their vital sustenance and they themselves had been created—the golden ratio.

Ralph Waldo Emerson. The happiest man is he who learns from nature the lesson of worship.
Lucius Annaeus Seneca: On entering a temple we assume all signs of reverence. How much more reverent then should we be before the heavenly bodies, the stars, the very nature of God!
John Muir: All the wild world is beautiful, and it matters but little where we go, to highlands or lowlands, woods or plains, on the sea or land or down among the crystals of waves or high in a balloon in the sky; through all the climates, hot or cold, storms and calms, everywhere and always we are in God's eternal beauty and love. So universally true is this, the spot where we chance to be always seems the best.
One of the last images of Teylers Museum, I promise. This is the other side of the electrostatic generator. One of my viewers was kind enough to explain this beast of a gadget with one of the previous images. Click here if you're interested. (I used to be crap at physics in secondary school... So much so that when I did once manage to get a good grade on a test, the teacher even wrote a comment on my paper saying 'you might turn into a physics expert one day!')
I noticed Teylers Museum is very active on Twitter, which I am too after finding out it is a great source of real life information! They have also found my images of my visit to the museum. Modern technology can be so cool ;-)

All art is but imitation of nature.-- Seneca (Letters from a Stoic - Letter LXV: On the First Cause)
The universe itself is God and the universal outpouring of its soul. --Chrysippus (Quoted by Cicero in De Natura Deorum)
Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells. --To Autumn. by John Keats

The ATLAS experiment is being constructed by 2000 physicists and engineers participating from more than 150 universities and laboratories in 36 countries. ATLAS is a particle physics experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Starting later in 2008, the ATLAS detector will search for new discoveries in the head-on collisions of protons of extraordinarily high energy. ATLAS will learn about the basic forces that have shaped our universe since the beginning of time and that will determine its fate. Among the possible unknowns are the origin of mass, extra dimensions of space, microscopic black holes, and evidence for dark matter candidates in the universe.

I was studying physics when I captured it. It's really amazing how such normal things turn out to be enormous . I love Physics but Astro-Physics is my favourite. I really love Winter ,even the name itself has an aura.
The only factor that affects the appearance is the sun's positioning of its rays, thus changing the vivid lighting and shade of the colors of this place.
My physics class were feeling unmotivated to revise for their upcoming Intermediate2 exam. So I gave them all a banana and challenged them to write as many physics equations on them as possible. I think we got 23 on one.
I recovered the HCX flight computer file from an unusual flight this evening. Can you tell what happened?
