Spectrum of Luck
The rainbow observed within this photo is the dispersion of light into a spectrum. In order to grasp the concept of the creation of a rainbow, one must first understand the laws of reflection and refraction. As a light ray moves from one medium to another, in this case from air to water, refraction occurs due to the bending of the ray. Reflection occurs when the ray of light hits a medium other than the one in which it was traveling through, and bounces off. The creation of a rainbow requires light rays to undergo both refraction and reflection as it collides into water droplets in the atmosphere. The light is first refracted when it enters the droplet, causing the ray’s component wavelengths to disperse. It is then reflected off the back of the droplet and returns to the front surface where it is refracted again while leaving the droplet. As the wavelengths of the light disperse, violet light, having the lowest wavelength, deviates the most while red light, having the highest wavelength, deviates the least. It is this difference in deviation that projects the red light at the top of the rainbow while the violet light becomes visible at the bottom.

“The Different Perspectives of Physics”
This photo was taken outside a building at the Historical Glencoe Mills in Burlington, NC on a snowy day in March. Although it is hard to believe, the glass window is giving us two perspectives! Half of the window is a reflection of the snowy outdoor scenery and half of the window is a transparent view of the inside of the old mill building. This physics phenomenon is actually a result of the incidence angles (angle at which light is hitting the surface of the window) coming from the light ray s of the sun are hitting the surface of the window. You might wonder why you are able to see through only half of the window. This is due to a particular angle of incidence known as Brewster’s angle. Brewster’s angle is the angle of incidence in which a light ray is perfectly transmitted through a surface. When light moves to a surface with a different index of refraction at a certain angle of incidence, the light cannot be reflected. On the other side of the photo however; specular reflection is occurring due to the planar quality of the mirror and the angle of incidence that is equal to the angle of reflection. This is the law of reflection and is creating a virtual image. A virtual image an image in which the outgoing rays from a point on the object never actually intersect at a point.

"A Reflection on the Past"
This picture shows a reflection of the Washington Monument on the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, DC. In this picture, the Vietnam War Memorial acts as a plane mirror and allows for a reflection of the Washington Monument and the surrounding landscape. Light rays travel through the air, strike the Vietnam Memorial, and bounce back creating a reflection. The image seen by the viewer in this picture is a virtual image; that is, the light rays do not pass through the image location. The image is located on the Memorial because our eyes perceive light rays in a straight line back into the surface of the Memorial. The image is clearly upright and has a magnification equal to 1. According to the law of reflection, the angle at which the light rays strike the Vietnam Memorial (the angle of incidence) is equal to the angle at which the light rays reflect off the Vietnam Memorial.
