This example is quite often used by physicists as an example for the effect of particle size on absorption/transmission characteristics. In this case the material contains nm-sized gold particles that have a so called 'plasmon resonance' at a certain frequency. All the electrons wiggle at their best when this takes place. Take a pendulum as the mechanical analogy. If you excite it with its natural frequency (eigen-frequency), the amplitude is greatest.

2011 Bates Summer Scholars work on making "sound" measurements. They start out in Carnegie 328 lab and then head outside in two groups of five. The group shown outdoors in on Garcelon Field.

 

This exercise is part of the course called Musical Acoustics, taught by Professor of Physics John Smedley. An introduction to the science of sound and the acoustics of musical instruments through the study of mechanical vibrations and waves. Concepts such as resonance, standing waves, and Fourier synthesis and analysis are developed and applied to theoretical and laboratory investigations of musical sound. Additional topics include hearing, psychoacoustics, and musical scales and harmony. No background in physics or mathematics beyond algebra is assumed. Laboratory work, problem solving, and simulations are integrated into class activities.

One common thing among my experimental group is that we all draw diagrams when we are trying to explain things. These are no works of art but yet they carry their own charm when someone comes across them later... sometimes we can even figure out what they were supposed to be.
