I went along to the Science is Vital rally outside the treasury. Lots of good speakers to raise awareness about the potential funding cuts to science coming up.

Much more info, and a petition against these cuts here: scienceisvital.org.uk/

The physics department’s newest faculty member, Ayana T. Arce, earned her PhD at Harvard, did a Chamberlain post-doctoral fellowship at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and is thrilled to have settled at Duke. When asked about her decision to come to Duke Physics, she says:

"The high energy physics group at Duke has got a perfect combination of energy and healthy collegial spirit. The idea is always to involve students. I think that’s really healthy because that’s how progress is made. It’s a good characteristic of a group and it’s great for the students who are here and that’s something I want to be a part of."

Dr. Betsy Ancker-Johnson is an American plasma physicist known for her research into instabilities that can occur in plasmas in solids, and for her invention of a gigacycle range signal generator using semiconductor materials in magnetic and electric fields. She was the first female Presidential appointee to the U. S. Department of Commerce and the fourth woman elected to the National Academy of Engineering.

We also hold an audio and video recording of her from the program "Women in Science" from 1975. For more information click here.

Physics is like sex: sure, it may give some practical results, but that's not why we do it.

A test I did with the Physics in 3DS Max, I like it..

The biggest team of the event. Around 20 people organized themselves in two small groups in order to make more accessible to the web the Standard Model (and as an extra work create an online tool to build Feynman Diagrams). Dr. Taylor showed the huge volume of space the SKA will be able to explore for signals from alien civilizations.

On April 19, Dr. Russ Taylor of the U of C Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, presented a public lecture: Building the World's Biggest Radio Telescope – the Square Kilometre Array. Dr Taylor outlined the science the massive new radio telescope will be able to perform, and the technical challenges in building a continent-wide array of antennas. The lecture, held in the Presentation Theatre at TELUS Spark, was presented by the Calgary Centre, RASC, in partnership with TELUS Spark.
