During their math and physics classes, the students of the third upper grades at MS Frohnleiten and their teachers talked about promising technologies and were particularly fascinated by the subject of artificial intelligence. This led to animated discussions, and the students contributed their ideas regarding the use of artificial intelligence in the future. The group with video editing as their elective subject adopted one of these ideas and produced a video based on it.

 

They are all more than satisfied with the results and would like to present the work to you now. The filming was done with the kids’ mobile phones. Various video editing programs (Shotcut, iPad apps, Premiere Pro) were used to process the raw material and add sound. A few noises and tones were recorded with the phones and added later. Additionally, various apps for producing a background picture for mobile phones were tested and applied, and a remote-control car was borrowed from a teacher. Another teacher allowed us to use his personal vehicle for the final scenes, and the remaining material (tools, computers, etc.) is the school’s own property.

This system is pretty cool. It's designed such that the `mixture' stays circulating in the fridge all the time and only the probe has to be removed when changing devices. This gets the turn around time down to just a few hours (if you work hard) compared to a couple of days for all the other systems we have.

 

The probe is a thin insulating rod about 3m long that passes all the way from room temperature down into the mixture (rated at ~20mK) in the glass mixing chamber. To counter the large heat leak it is anchored by a thread at the 1K pot (which is why the pot is so massive and has it's own level meter!) and by a cone at the top of the mixing chamber.

 

The system was commissioned in 1985 and I think it was one of the first prototypes of this sort of system. It has a few problems (like drinking helium like there's no tomorrow) but it's given plenty of good results in it's time.

 

It's currently open because the sintered silver heat exchanger has a leak (very bad news).

On March 25th 2011, School of Physics and Astronomy University of Manchester had organised a trip to Jodrell Bank. The main attraction there is the big Lovell Telescope. This radio telescope is one of the biggest ( 76 m or 250 ft and most powerful radio telescopes in the world, spending most of its time investigating cosmic phenomena.

An estimated 2,500 community members attended College of DuPage’s second annual STEM-CON event, an interactive conference celebrating the fields celebrating science, technology, engineering and math.The all-day event featured more than 50 booths offering interactive activities designed to inform, entertain and stimulate an interest in STEM, including a weather balloon launch, river system development, nanotechnology, the physics of flight and robotics. Featured speakers included Dr. Eugenia Cheng, Scientist in Residence at Chicago’s School of the Art Institute and author of “How to Bake Pi,” stuck bomb celebrity Andre Jefferson and Fermilab’s “Mr. Freeze” Jerry Zimmerman.

60th birthday cake for a physics teacher. I was given a list of things I needed to include on the cake, and I had no idea what most of them were!! They include a pulley system, a prism with light entering and a rainbow coming out of it, a rocket, a weight and an a wave. Wished I'd listened more to my own physics teacher at school!
