From the June 2010 archive. I took a series of shots of these fellows while I was looking for landscapes in the province of Groningen, the Netherlands. I wanted to compose and shoot this tree while the horses got curious and came closer. They didn't seem to have plans to move out of my way. The best thing I could do was taking advantage of them..

listen to Gabrielle Aplin version of "The Liar and the lighter"
I am finding out that maybe I was wrong
That I've fallen down and I can't do this alone
Stay with me,
This is what I need,
Please.
[Refrain:]
Sing us a song and we'll sing it back to you
We could sing our own but what would it be without you?
I am nothing now and it's been so long
Since I've heard the sound, the sound of my only hope
This time I will be listening.
[Repeat Refrain]
This heart, it beats, beats for only you (2x)
This heart, it beats, beats for only you
My heart is yours
This heart, it beats, beats for only you
My heart is yours
(My heart, it beats for you)
This heart, it beats, beats for only you (It beats, beats for only you)
My heart is yours (My heart is yours)
This heart, it beats, beats for only you (Please don't go now, please don't fade away)
My heart, my heart is yours (Please don't go now, please don't fade away)
(Please don't go now, please don't fade away) My heart is yours

Just got back home after ten days in Chicago, where I stayed in a Holiday Inn right across the Chicago River from this amazing-looking building.
Chicago has an absolutely gorgeous downtown area, probably one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. Old buildings and new rise side by side, and the river runs through them all. There are cool 1930s-style steel lift bridges every block and, to top off the eye candy, there's even an elevated train. They call this part of town The Loop, I'm not sure why. What I *am* sure of is that I'd love to go back there and take photographs for about two or three weeks someday. It's a photographer's dream.
...a few years ago, my friend Andrey (right side on photo, black shirts and pants ) and me, my person....

Dune di Lancelin - Western Australia
Lancelin Dunes- Western Australia
Lancelin is small sea side town about 130km North of Perth, famous for it’s sand dunes, which are mainly used for off roading activities.
The area was initially a holiday camping place through the 1940s and holiday shacks were probably built in the area during this time but interest in the area grew as it was designated as a possible port to be utilised by the crayfish, or lobster fishery.
The town has a permanent population of over 600, and swells to 2,500 during the peak holiday period around Christmas - New Year.
Kitesurfing and windsurfing are popular in the ocean off Lancelin, as are sandboarding and 4-wheel driving on the beaches and in the dunes behind the town.

Memphremagog lake in the foggy morning.
Lake Memphremagog (Lac Memphrémagog in Quebec) is a fresh water glacial lake located between Newport, Vermont, United States and Magog, Quebec, Canada.[1] The lake is 27 miles (43 km) long with 73 percent of the lake's surface area in Quebec, where it drains into the Magog River.[2] However, three-quarters of its watershed, 489 square miles (1,270 km2), is in Vermont. The total is 687 square miles (1,780 km2), with 198 square miles (510 km2) located in Quebec.[3]
The lake elevation is 682 feet (208 m) and its maximum recorded depth is 285 feet (87 m) located near the international divide. The lake is the third deepest in Vermont[4][5] It contains 20 islands. Province Island, the largest, is divided by the international border.[6] The name Memphremagog is derived from Algonkian, in which it means "where there is a big expanse of water".
As I come to the end of my Ol Tukai Elephant series I am posting one of the most serene photos I took there. There are few things more adorable and heart breaking than a baby elephant following its mummy. Don’t you guys think so? I saw loads of such examples in Amboseli; little ones following the elders in their herd, knowing that one day they would have to stop being innocent calves and be an adult elephant in a perilous world. If they are bulls, they have to be out in the world on their own. If they are females, they have to care for each other and seize the best opportunities for finding food, water and mud! And all this amidst an ever increasing threat from the biggest enemy of wildlife out there; humans.
But there is time for that, today is just about enjoying a sunny afternoon in the savannah.
Inspired by the flickr group Xanadu-la-la-la, i re-watched the classic movie Citizen Kane.
Later in the week, coincidentally, I was listening to The White Stripes album, White Blood Cells.

About this shot
So they didn't want to let me in over at Battersea Power Station!? But I really wanted to take some close-ups! That's when Inflatable Me (TM) came in handy...haHA!
After taking some shots of Battersea Power Station from the other side of the Thames (below) I crossed Chelsea Bridge to see how close I actually could get to the power station, walking around the site. Unfortunately the whole area was closed with quite high fences...
Pink Floyd
The reason I was interested in Battersea power station in the first place, is because I'm a huge fan of pop-art and I love the music of Pink Floyd. The Pink Floyd album 'Animals' (1977) featured Battersea power station on its cover with a giant inflatable pig 'Algie' flying in the middle of it. A unique concept which tickled me to go see the place for myself. :)

A morning at Kampung Genting, Tioman
It was certainly unusual to see the moon bright in bright and early but it set an interesting mood to the morning. The sky was less intense with colours since this shoreline was facing West and what was most captivating was still the moon and the vast ocean at the end of the pier

i'm getting so ridiculously feminine i think i may have had a lobotomy without realising it.
this represents a lot to me, you have to give it your all in order to get somewhere or anywhere, or achieve something to yourself.
i think, i'm on my way there, in my head, in myself.
After Marymere Falls, we made our way to Sol Duc Hot Springs. The waterfall at Sol Duc is supposedly the most photographed spot in Olympic National Park. We got there too late to get good shots of the falls. The sun was high in the sky and direct light was falling across the river. Luckily, the bright sun had the fortuitous side effect of making a rainbow!
You'd think that the mid-day sunlight would have been my biggest photographic challenge, but in this case, the crowds of people enjoying the falls was a much bigger issue. You can't tell from the photos, but there was easily a dozen people enjoying the falls at the same time we were. I had to be very patient and strategic to avoid getting other tourists in my shot.
The Sol Duc Falls Trail starts out right past the campground. The falls are an easy .8 mile walk from the parking lot.

The fortress of Sv. Ivan (St. John) also called Mulo Tower, is [a] monumental building on the south-eastern side of the Old City Port, controlling and protecting its entrance. The first fort of this complex was built in the 14th century and then extended and modified in the 15th and 16th centuries. The present look of the fortress dates from the 16th century and is [the] work of the local builder Paskoje Milièeviæ. This large building, with many gun ports for its primary function, houses today the Maritime Museum and the Aquarium.

pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponte_25_de_Abril
The 25 de Abril Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril "25th of April Bridge", Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈpõt(ɨ) ˈvĩt(ɨ) ˈsĩku dɨ ɐˈbɾiɫ]) is a suspension bridge connecting the city of Lisbon, capital of Portugal, to the municipality of Almada on the left (south) bank of the Tejo river. It was inaugurated on August 6, 1966 and a train platform was added in 1999. Because of its similar coloring, it is often compared to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, USA. In fact, it was built by the same company (American Bridge Company) that constructed the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and not the Golden Gate, also explaining its similarity in design. With a total length of 2,277 m, it is the 20th largest suspension bridge in the world. The upper platform carries six car lanes, the lower platform two train tracks. Until 1974, the bridge was named Salazar Bridge.
Grand Teton National Park at Oxbow Bend, along the Snake River.
People ask me why or when do you shoot a scene in the 'landscape' orientation (horizontal) or in the 'portrait' orientation (vertical). I discuss this in detail in one of my free landscape articles--see below. Most landscape shots are framed horizontally, because that fits best with the scene. The choice for the serious nature photographer is more complex. The first decision you must make is, what is the end purpose of the shot? A calendar image is almost always shot horizontally. A magazine cover is shot vertically. For this shot, I did both. Follow the link below to see the horizontal image of this scene.
www.flickr.com/photos/wwwca/3669960447/
From looking at the two images of the same scene shot seconds apart, you can see how different they are. One encompasses the entire scene--the forest, the river, the snow-capped Teton mountains and the ducks are very small. It is a 'grand' scene. The shot above, the vertical one, 'zooms in' and focuses on Mt Moran and its reflection on the Snake River. Here the ducks are more of an important part of the scene--a secondary compositional element.
When I approach a scene like this, I try to always shoot it both ways and then process them to get the best out of the shot. If Outdoor Photographer magazine ever wants a magazine cover of Oxbow Bend, I have it. ;>) Please feel free to call!
Also note the 'placement' of the ducks in the version above. Now as a nature photographer, I did not swim out into the Snake River and 'place' the four ducks. As the patient nature photographer, I waited for the duck to place themselves for this shot. While my photography partner James Neeley was making his way along the river's shore taking many great images, I was setup on my tripod and just waiting for the ducks to swim into place. Then I snapped away, horizontally and vertically. One of the most important things I like to teach about nature photography is the 'art of waiting'. James Neeley, Jeff Sullivan, Kevin McNeal and I will be teaching a landscape and nature photography workshop here next June.

White Lotus Flower
The lotus flower appeared in legends originating from ancient Egypt. It played an important part in ancient Egyptian religion. The pure white lotus flower, the only plant to fruit and flower simultaneously, emerges from the depths of the muddy swamp. Growing from the mud at the bottom of ponds and streams, the exquisite Lotus flower rises above the water and is usually white or pink with 15 or more oval, spreading petals, and a peculiar, flat seedcase at its center.
Sesen A Lotus Flower. This is a symbol of the sun, of creation and rebirth. Because at night the flower closes and sinks underwater, at dawn it rises and opens again. According to one creation myth it was a giant lotus which first rose out of the watery chaos at the beginning of time. From this giant lotus the sun itself rose on the first day. A symbol of Upper Egypt .The lotus flower played a prominent role in the version of the creation story that originated in Heliopolis. Before the universe came into being, there was an infinite ocean of inert water which constituted the primeval being named Nun. Out of Nun emerged a lotus flower, together with a single mound of dry land. The lotus blossoms opened, and out stepped the self-created sun god, Atum, as a child. A slightly different version of the creation story originated in Hermopolis. In that version, the sun god who formed himself from the chaos of Nun emerged from the lotus petals as Ra. The lotus is a flower which opens and closes each day. His history went on to say that the petals of the lotus blossom enfolded him when he returned to it each night.
The lotus flower has been featured extensively throughout the art of ancient Egypt. In various works of art, you may see it held in the hand of a god or human, serving as a border to outline a section of the artwork, unfolding to reveal various gods or humans, and many other depictions. The ancient Egyptians from the 4th dynasty greatly valued the sacred lotus, in religious ceremonies and funerals. The ancient Egyptians developed the art of counting to a high degree, but their system of numeration was very crude. For example, the number 1,000 was symbolized by a picture of a lotus flower, and the number 2,000 was symbolized by a picture of two lotus flowers growing out of a bush.

Larva
The behaviour of the larva is very similar to that of the Small Tortoiseshell, the two species often being seen together. In the first instar, Peacock larvae are very similar to those of the Small Tortoiseshell. However, mature Peacock larvae are jet black for the most part, whereas Small Tortoiseshell larvae are typically dark green with a pair of yellow stripes running down the length of their sides.
On emerging from their eggs, Peacock larvae build a communal web near the top of the plant and from which they emerge to bask and feed and are usually highly conspicuous. As the larvae grow, they move to new plants, building new webs along the way. Webs are decorated with shed larval skins and droppings and are easily found.
Larvae have several techniques to avoid predation. When disturbed, a group of larvae will often jerk their bodies from side to side in unison, which must be a formidable sight to any predator. The larvae will also regurgitate green fluid and will, if necessary, curl up in a ball and drop to the ground. Larvae feed both during the day and at night. There are 5 instars in total.
The primary larval foodplant is Common Nettle (Urtica dioica). Hop (Humulus lupulus) and Small Nettle (Urtica urens) are also used.
1st Instar
"The larva eats away the crown of the egg, and all hatch at once. Those at the bottom of the batch immediately start feeding through the leaf, and all live in a dense mass, spinning a web over the leaf. Directly after emergence the larva measures only 1.6 mm. long; the body is cylindrical; the head large, black and shining, beset with fine black hairs. On the body are four longitudinal rows of long, fine, black, simple hairs with bulbous bases; they are slightly curved and have the extreme tips very slightly clubbed and whitish. On the ventral surface and claspers are paler fine straight hairs; the spiracles are outlined with black. The surface is finely granular, with minute, raised, dark points. The colour is a very light ochreous-green, almost white-green." - Frohawk (1924)
2nd Instar
"The first moult was on June 5th, 1908, the first stage lasting six days. Before the second moult, nine days old, it measures 8 mm. in length. It is a good deal similar to the previous stage; the base of the longest hairs now form black conical tubercles, which are beset with bristles, and each terminates in a long, slightly serrated black hair. There are numerous black serrated hairs of different lengths, some extremely small, scattered over the body, which is granulated with fine black points. The head is shining black, with minute black bristles. The surface of the body is very shining, of a mottled olive-brown, blotched with pale ochreous round each of the largest tubercles. They live and feed in company. Preparatory to moulting they all assemble in a dense mass on a thick carpet of web spun over the eaten part of the plant, and thereon, packed together, undergo the second moult. When disturbed they all throw up the anterior half of their bodies in the form of a hook (thus c__) and remain so for a few minutes." - Frohawk (1924
3rd Instar
"The second moult occurred on June 9th, 1908, the second stage occupying four days. Before the third moult, thirteen days old, it measures from 12.7 mm. to 14.8 mm. long. In this stage a further development in the size of the tubercles is noticeable, especially the two dorsal rows, which are of considerable length and terminate, as all the shorter ones do, with long, slightly curved hairs. The ground colour is purplish-dark-brown, the longer hairs, which are scattered over the body, are placed on white dots. The head and other details of the surface are as in the previous stage; the claspers are pale olive-ochreous. They still live gregariously, and, as in the previous stage, prior to moulting they all assemble in a dense pack, forming a conspicuous black mass. In this stage they consume a great quantity of food; and when touched or irritated exude from the mouth a comparatively large drop of green liquid; and when slightly disturbed they throw up their heads and fore part of the body as in the last stage, and if still further annoyed or shaken they fall to the ground with much wriggling, at the same time lowering themselves by a silk thread." - Frohawk (1924)
4th Instar
"The third moult June 13th, 1908. The third stage also lasted four days. Before fourth moult, eighteen days old, the larva is 25.4 mm. in length; very similar to the previous stage. All the tubercles are well developed, the two dorsal rows being about twice the length of the sub-dorsal and lateral series. The white spots are now more distinct and numerous. The head and legs are shining black, as well as the anal pair of claspers. The ground colour is a purple-black; in other respects the details are the same as in the previous stage. Before moulting they again assemble in a dense mass." - Frohawk (1924)
5th Instar
"The fourth and last moult took place on June 18th, 1908, the fourth stage lasting five days. After fourth moult, fully grown, about twenty-eight days old, it averages in length about 41 .3 mm., some specimens as much as 44 mm. long. It is fairly cylindrical and comparatively slender; the first segment is much the smallest. There are six longitudinal rows of black shining spines from the fifth to eleventh segments inclusive; the second and third segments have each only two dorsal spines, which are longer than those on the other segments; the fourth and anal segments have each four spines; the first segment has no spines, but a transverse ridge of fine black hairs. The spines are sub-dorsal, super-spiracular and sub-spiracular. They are long and shining black, sharply pointed, and bear numerous bristles of various lengths; the body is densely covered with minute black bristles, which adds intensity to the rich velvety-black ground colour. At the segmental divisions the surface is smooth and of a dull leaden-black. Each segment is encircled with numerous pure white globular warts, each emitting a fine white hair; the largest are in front of the spiracles. On the first segment is a dorsal, shining, black, transverse disc, and two round ones on the anal segment; the first is small and adjoins the eleventh segment, the other forms a large rounded knob on the extremity. The head and legs are shining black and thickly studded with black bristles of varying lengths; the claspers are ochreous-brown at the base, the middle portion bright ochreous, the foot palest. Several of the larvae were fully grown on June 24th (the fifth stage occupying six days), making the larval period twenty-seven days: twenty-five days feeding and two days occupied in changing to pupa." - Frohawk (1924)

Gift Of The Seagull
by Munda
A lonely seagull flies the winds
Majestic... soaring...gliding wings
A single screech sounds from the sky
Come fly with me... come here and fly
My spirit floats to be a part
I feel the beating of its heart
My soul, one with this bird of sea
Now knows the meaning to fly free
I feel the winds caress my soul
And soar the streams without a goal
My being trembles of delight
A treasure I received tonight
The seagull's flight of soaring high
The gift of what it means to fly
Every trip has its highlight in Lisbon it was visiting the monastery of Jeronimos in the suburb of Belem. I have never seen such delicate stonework both the church and its cloisters are quite remarkable. Took the shot hand held no tripod
A bit from the guidebook
The monastery is one of the most prominent monuments of the Manueline-style architecture (Portuguese late-Gothic) in Lisbon, classified in 1983 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the nearby Tower of Belém. The construction of the monastery and church began on 6 January 1501 (and were completed 100 years later). King Manuel originally funded the project with money obtained from the Vintena da Pimenta, a 5% tax on commerce from Africa and the Orient, equivalent to 70 kilograms (150 lb) of gold per year, with the exception of pepper, cinnamon and cloves (which went directly to the Crown. With the influx of riches, the architects were not limited to small plans, and resources already prescribed for the Monastery of Batalha were redirected to the project in Belém.
Manuel I selected the religious order of Hieronymite monks to occupy the monastery, whose role it was to pray for the King's eternal soul and to provide spiritual assistance to navigators and sailors who departed from the beach of Restelo to discover the world.
The monastery was designed in a style that later became known as Manueline: a richly ornate architectural design that includes complex sculptural themes incorporating maritime elements and objects discovered during naval expeditions, carved in limestone. Diogo de Boitaca,[ the architect, pioneered this style in the Monastery of Jesus in Setúbal. On this project Boitaca was responsible for the plans and contracting work on the monastery, the sacristy, and the refectory. He used calcário de lioz, a local gold-coloured limestone, that was quarried from Ajuda, the valley of Alcántara, Laveiras, Rio Seco and Tercena, for its construction. Boitaca was succeeded by the Spaniard Juan de Castilho, who took charge of construction around 1517. Castilho gradually moved from the Manueline to the Spanish Plateresque style, an ornamentation that included lavish decorations that recall silverware (Spanish: plata). The construction came to a halt when the King Manuel I died in 1521.

Pararge aegeria
Superfamily: Papilionoidea
Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Satyrinae
Genus: Pararge
Subgenus:
Species: aegeria (Linnaeus, 1758)
Subspecies: tircis (Godart, 1821)
oblita (Harrison, 1949)
insula (Howarth, 1971)
The Speckled Wood is a common butterfly and familiar to many observers, especially in woodland where, as its name suggests, it is most often found. The appearance of this butterfly changes from north to south, forming a "cline", where individuals in the north are dark brown with white spots, with those in more southerly locations being dark brown with orange spots. This has given rise to a number of subspecies. In addition to the named subspecies, Thompson (1952) identified a race that formed an altitudinal cline in Snowdonia, south-west of the river Conway, giving it the name drumensis. The single-brooded adults flew in June at high altitude above the tree line, and were large with pale prominent markings.
In England this butterfly is found south of a line between Westmorland in the west and South-east Yorkshire in the east, with a few scattered colonies further north. It is also found in the west and north of Scotland, but is absent from the south, the Outer Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland. It is widespread in both Wales and Ireland, but is absent from exposed high ground. This species is expanding its range and it is anticipated that it will eventually fill the gaps in its distribution.
Subspecies: Pararge aegeria aegeria
The nominate subspecies was first defined in Linnaeus (1758) as shown here (type locality: Southern Europe and Mauritania). It is not found in the British Isles.
Subspecies: Pararge aegeria tircis
This subspecies was first defined in Godart (1821) as shown here and as shown in this plate (type locality: Germany). This subspecies occurs through the range of this species, with the exception of Scotland and the Isles of Scilly. The spring brood has larger cream spots than those of the summer brood.
Subspecies: Pararge aegeria oblita
This subspecies was first defined in Harrison (1949) (type locality: Loch Scresort, Isle of Rhum, Scotland). This subspecies represents the population found in Scotland. Like the subspecies tircis, the spring brood has larger cream spots than those of the summer brood. It differs from the subspecies tircis as follows:
1. The overall appearance is much whiter.
2. There is a much great contrast overall, with the dark markings appearing blacker and the pale spots appearing whiter.
Pararge aegeria oblita
Male and female. Ground colour above and below much whiter than in the form aegerides Stgr., and the blackish markings above and below definitely blacker in the more intensively marked areas and greyer elsewhere.
Male holotype – Loch Scresort., Isle of Rhum, August 8th, 1948.
Female allotype – same data.
Subspecies: Pararge aegeria insula
This subspecies was first defined in Howarth (1971) (type locality: Isles of Scilly, England). This subspecies represents the population found on the Isles of Scilly. Like the subspecies tircis, the spring brood has larger spots than those of the summer brood. It differs from the subspecies tircis as follows:
1. The upperside has better-developed orange markings, especially those surrounding the spots on the hindwing.
2. The underside of the forewing has orange, rather than cream, markings toward the centre.
3. The underside of the hindwing has a darker purplish-grey area at the margin, providing more contrast.
Pararge aegeria insula
The following description is a comparison with the first generation of ssp.tircis (form aestivalis Fruhstorfer).
Male. Upperside. The orange markings are better developed, particularly those surrounding the post-discal series of ocelli on the hindwing and the spot is space 5. Underside. The forewing has the base of space 2 filled with a broad, almost clear orange marking which is immediately above and adjacent to a similar marking in space 1. In aestivalis the latter is broadly darkened basad and the marking above suffused. The hindwing has the purplish grey marginal area slightly darker and in more contrast to the discal markings so that the wing appears slightly more variegated in coloration.
Female. Upperside. Similar to the male but the tawny markings are better developed, particularly the marking at the base of space 2 and that immediately below it, which, in this area of the male is partially obscured by the androconial brand. Underside. Similar to that of the male.
Holotype. Male, Scilly Isles, St.Mary’s, ix.1970, Austin Richardson, B.M. 1970-712.
Allotype female, same data as holotype.
Paratypes: 11 male, 1 female, same data as holotype.
Phenology
This species is unique among the butterflies of the British Isles in that it can overwinter in 2 stages, as both a larva and pupa. As a result, there is a mixed emergence with adult butterflies on the wing from April through to September, with a few adults being seen as early as March or as late as October, especially at southern sites. There are 2 or 3 generations, depending on location and weather conditions and adults of later generations are generally darker than those emerging earlier in the year.
Habitat
As its names suggests, this butterfly is primarily found in woodland, but can be found anywhere there is sufficient scrub to provide the shaded conditions that this butterfly favours which includes gardens and hedgerows.
Larval Foodplants
The primary larval foodplants are Cock's-foot (Dactylis glomerata), Common Couch (Elytrigia repens), False Brome (Brachypodium sylvaticum) and Yorkshire-fog (Holcus lanatus).
Nectar Sources
Adults feed primarily on Honeydew / Sap (). Bramble (Rubus fruticosus), Cuckooflower (Cardamine pratensis), Dandelion (Taraxacum agg.), Fleabane (Pulicaria dysenterica), Privet (Ligustrum vulgare) and Ragwort (Senecio jacobaea) are also used.
Imago
This butterfly is often seen in more-sheltered conditions than other species and is often the only species seen in dappled shade, or in overcast conditions.
The male is territorial and will inhabit a particular clearing or hedgerow, where he will rest on a prominent sunlit perch waiting for a passing female. Other males are soon seen off before the defending male returns to a favourite perch. If no suitable territory can be found, or when there is a large number of males, the male will patrol in search of a mate instead. When a male encounters a receptive female, which has a more laboured flight than the male, she will fall to the ground or a nearby leaf where, after a brief courtship, the pair mate.
Both sexes feed from honeydew, but also take nectar from a variety of plants when honeydew is scarce, such as Ragwort.
Aberrations
ab. kulczynskii (Pruffer.Rozpr.Wydz.Polsk.Ak.Umiez(1920).1921.60.Ser.B.p.124.pl.2.f.8.)
Male. On the forewings the outer costal spot, the spot immediately below it, and a third one touching the eye-spot on its lower side, remain normal. The other spots are visible but so much obscured that they are hardly lighter than the dark ground colour. Hindwings with the costal and postdiscal spots present but the ocellated marginal band strongly reduced. Transitional to saturatior Crom. but differs chiefly on the hindwings which still show the marginal band of ocellated spots, these are absent in both ab.saturatior and fusca Hackett.
ab. saturatior (Crombrugghe.Rev.Mens.Soc.Ent.Nam.1911.ll.p.45.)
= fusca Hackett.Entom.1958.91.p.114.
Only four yellow spots remain on the forewing. The two lowest marginal ones near the tornus are absent and the two, one above and one below the apical eye, are very small. The yellow band on the hindwing is completely obliterated. Hackett's fusca is so similar that it would be difficult to draw a line. Fore and hindwings blackish-brown except for two white dots, one above and one below the apical eye, and three other very faint traces of the usual "speckles". Two of these are on the forewings, one on the edge of the discal cell, the other in the central area just above the median vein, the third on the hindwings below the costal margin. Unless the types are seen it would be difficult to know by these descriptions if they are different.
Ovum
The spherical eggs are very light green in colour are laid singly, sometimes in pairs, on the underside of a leaf of the foodplant. It is believed that temperature is a major factor when a female chooses a plant on which to lay. In spring and autumn eggs are laid on plants in more-open positions than those laid in the summer, when more-shaded plants are used. Eggs hatch after 1 to 3 weeks, depending on temperature.
Larva
The young larva sits on the underside of the leaf feeding, both day and night, from the leaf edge toward the midrib. Larger larvae will move from plant to plant to feed and, as winter approaches, will rest at the base of the plant. Depending on the temperature and amount of daylight, some larvae will reach pupation, this species being the only butterfly in the British Isles that passes the winter in 2 different stages - as larva and pupa, although it is believed that only 3rd instar larvae are able to successfully overwinter. This stage can be passed in as little as 25 days when the temperature is high. There are 3 or 4 moults in total.
Pupa
The pupa is formed head down from a grass stem or nearby leaf litter, attached by the cremaster. This stage can be as short as 10 days for those pupae that go on to produce adults in the same year.

Conservation Status
This is one of our few species that is doing well, with a sustained expansion to its range. It is believed that this butterfly has benefited from a reduction in coppicing, resulting in shadier woodland that this butterfly favours. As such, it is not a species of conservation concern.
( www.ellobonomuerecordero.blogspot.com

Left to Right:
Colonial Defenders – While some are former rebels, enforcers, or Imperials, many battle-trained colonists hail from planetary guard forces or other backgrounds. With intelligence and grit, they stand ready against any pirate, thief, or warlord who gives their colonies even a second glance.
Mon Quaramari Farmer – A hybrid from the world of Mon Cala, and a living example of reconciliation between enemies. This farmer takes the time and effort to care for the land well, and reaps the rewards.
Talz Forester – His duty is to make sure the forest and the animals that live within are healthy, and that the trees suitable for carbonculling are in good condition when it comes time to harvest.
Duros Droidsmith – Droids make life easier in the frontier colonies, but not every freed Imperial-slave-turned-colonist has the know-how to keep them up-and-running. This Duros travels from colony to colony to fix, teach, and help where he can.
Mato Rook – Once an enforcer for the Hutts, Mato escaped criminal servitude to a peaceful life on Wayland. There he found a family and a purpose, and a love for the seven-string halikset.
Mirialan Child – She gave mom and dad the slip to hear the music from across the field. Chores are dumb. She wants to dance!
Drall Colonist – This elderly female is past the point of doing much field work, instead she stays in the village center and teaches the children. But music has always been one of her passions, and she’s not too old to show it.
Zabrak Engineer – A gearhead who maintains the village’s skimmers and iontractors. She prefers order, logic, and cause-and-effect. Music fits into that perfectly, so she happily accompanies Mato on her handmade synthetic gnarlhorn.
Dubravan Defender – Once a member of a Coruscant martial warrior guild, this farmer takes a few days a week to watch for dangerous wildlife and prepare other defenders, just in case.
