The Days We Wear Masks 20210306

In Chinese calendar, every year there is a day in summertime earmarked for beating 'petty persons' (i.e. hostile parties). This day is called Jingzhe, overlapping either March 5th or the 6th in western calendar.

The main objective of the beating petty persons is to eliminate their vicious influence, while invoking aid from "honorable person" for the ritual's recipient who may or may not be the actual performer of the ritual.

In Hong Kong, underneath the Goose Neck Bridge in Wan Chai is a well-known locale for people exercising the ritual, but it is a mistaken idea if it is thought to be an exclusive venue, as one could easily find people everywhere performing the same ritual at street corners in respective neighborhoods. The Bridge draws particular attention simply because it gathers a number of elderly women, working as 'professional beaters'.

For first time, number of confirmed cases crosses into five digits, with 10,010 emerging on Friday.

Chuang Shuk-kwan of the CHP, meanwhile, noted that there has been a clear increase in the number of Covid cases.

“Whether we can control this, it actually involves a lot of aspects. Isolation facilities is one of them, and they’re seriously insufficient now. The other is social distancing, but that depends on whether citizens will cooperate, like whether people are staying at home and whether companies are having work-from-home arrangements as far as they can,” Chuang said.

“I saw that there is still a considerable amount of people on the streets nowadays,” she added.

A survey measuring pupils' stress levels ahead of next week's start of university entrance examinations suggests the coronavirus pandemic is taking a toll on their mental well-being.

Announcing the results on Sunday, the Hok Yau Club said the 1,700 form six students polled rated their stress levels at 7.6 out of 10, which is slightly lower than last year's record high of 8.1.

However, the scores were still the second highest since the Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) was introduced in 2012.

Students said the pandemic had mostly affected their motivation, concentration and learning progress because of class suspension.

The club's student guidance consultant Ng Po-shing also said students had difficulty releasing their stress as some sport facilities were closed because of the social distancing measures.

"In the past even when students had some pressure from the DSE, they could still do some sports with their classmates, which is quite effective in reducing the pressure,” he said.

"But this year, may be the students can't do so many things to reduce their pressure level. So that's why in general the pressure index is higher.”

Ng also said students were worried about not being able to study their favourite subjects even though it's now less competitive to get into universities thanks to a drop in student numbers.

He reminded students that if they are caught in an ambush lockdown for coronavirus testing on the day of their exam or the night before, they should let authorities know as soon as possible that they are taking the DSE so that special arrangements can be made.

Remember classic Hollywood movies 🎥, where young attractive ladies used to sell cigarettes in parties or gathering of some sort. I still like those movies ( not for those ladies only#) it kind of takes your mind of the reality. Here is a Cigarette & Tea seller in his rounds early in the morning. There are thousands of them in the city , walking numerous miles everyday to earn a living - facing harshest of times during this pandemic. #hcsc_street #dhakagram #streetsofdhaka #eerstreet #streetphotography #streetphoto #life_is_street #streetphotos #streetphotographers #streetphotographyinternational #zonestreet #street_storytelling #photodocumentary #photodocumentarybangladesh #lensculture #lensculturestreets #ricohgr2 #grist #grii #grsnaps #ricohimaging #ricohpentax #streetphotographerscommunity #streetphotographersmagazine #ihsp #spi_collective #ttlbd #littleboxcollective

Hong Kong is tightening rules of social distancing to counter the worst epidemic wave, imposing the wearing of face masks in public places and gatherings are limited to two people.

Internet in Cuba (8)

Young Cuban people enjoy internet via their mobile phones at a paid wifi spot on the street in Havana.

While the Internet is still illegal in private homes, government owned internet cafes offer Internet access. In 2014, Cuba had an Internet penetration rate of 30 percent. In 2015, the Cuban government opened the first public wi-fi hotspots in 35 public locations. They also reduced prices and increased speeds for Internet access at state-run cybercafes.

Kudzu (Pueraria lobata) is a perennial vine of the pea family native to Eastern Asia. The English word kudzu is derived from Japanese "kuzu", which means the plant itself, or powdered starch extracted from the plant's root.

Kuzu powder, also known as kuzuko, is valued in Japan as the highest-grade of starch. It has been long used in many high-quality Japanese restaurants and wagashi makers ("wagashi" means traditional Japanese sweets), as well as in home cooking -- for making sauces, soups, coating foods before deep frying, etc. and also for making desserts.

When kuzu powder dissolved in water is heated slowly, it gels and takes on translucent looks. It is ideal as a thickener because sauces made with kuzu are more likely to maintain their temperature, ensuring that foods are at the proper warmth or coldness when served.

Kuzu starch particles are extremely fine compared with other kinds of starch, so kuzu allows foods to develop a uniquely smooth and delicate texture. Kuzu is one of the main ingredients of Japanese summer sweets. The translucent appearance with smooth and slippery taste of chilled kuzu gel or kuzu coated wagashi really brings us cool feelings.

Kuzu is also known for its medical properties and recognized as organic food. Recently, a variety of international cuisines both in Japan and abroad use kuzu.

Health officials say residents from two apartment blocks in Quarry Bay and Pok Fu Lam will be sent to quarantine for 21 days after two domestic helpers were confirmed to have contracted highly infectious strains of the coronavirus.

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) said in a statement published on Wednesday morning that the two women – aged 46 and 38 – live in Kornhill in Quarry Bay and Royalton in Pok Fu Lam respectively.

The two were reported as preliminary positive cases on Tuesday, and further analyses found that both carried the N501Y and E484K mutant strains.

One of them was also said to have received her first BioNTech vaccine jab on April 18.

The CHP said it would transfer all asymptomatic residents to quarantine centres, while those with symptoms would be sent to hospital.

Around 230 units at Kornhill and 30 units at Royalton were affected by the government’s move, which came hot on the heels of ambush lockdowns of the blocks, with residents made to undergo mandatory tests.

Some Kornhill residents told RTHK they were concerned about the possibility of Covid-19 being transmitted in the neighbourhood.

"We have done our best to avoid being infected and everybody is very careful in the area," one woman said.

"Of course we're very concerned because this is a variant, but we need to just take care of ourselves, maintain proper hygiene, that's all,” another woman told RTHK.

This is it then, the last day of the 32nd Olympiad, and what a two weeks it has been. Gold, silver and bronze medals are all coming back to Hong Kong making it the city’s most successful Games ever, and Sarah Lee Wai-sze has just added the exclamation mark.

The Hong Kong cyclist has beaten Emma Hinze for the bronze medal in the women’s sprint, meaning the city’s team has won an unprecedented six medals.

This building is off the beaten path, and I would imagine if I did a plat search, I would find that at one time it was surrounded by some fairly elegant structures.

Now it has a mosque attached, a restaurant that has no posted hours and a deserted street along the back bordering the light rail.

Some of the local history I've absorbed about Minneapolis, is the tendency to tear down and build anew. Blue line street maps in the Central Library show that many structures were torn down rather then integrated into new builds. There seems to be an opposite philosophy in St. Paul, where historic buildings are incorporated among the new construction.
