Paying a little homage to the 1925 version of the Phantom of the Opera. The version that first introduced me to this amazing story and got me hooked in classic literature. Even though Gerard Butler mybe my Phatom, without Lon Chaney may have missed it all. #GerardButler #lonchaney ##PhantomOfTheOpera

I got this folded up inside the cereal box back in 1976 and I still have it. Phantom artwork by the great Basil Gogos. These posters glow in the dark.

Click on it, looks cool on black.

In this 1925 thriller the pathetic, brilliant musician must hide his unfortunate, hideous face by a mask, and forever live with his pipe organ in catacombs under the Paris Opera. This is one of the most stark and shocking scenes in cinema history: The young singer has ripped off the musician's mask and is horrified by his true face.

Inspired by my love for that wonderful story and broadway show!

Everything about Phantom is so romantic and magical, filled with love, secrets and desire!

I hope this card brings out the romance in you!

Hugs!

Day Three:

For you may have escaped the red devils that attempt to surround you. Your may have run fast. Your haste being your own downfall as it leads you to places that you may wish you hadn't ventured. There are monsters who have convinced themselves they're men and harbour the delusion they're not out to get you.

Those are the ones that are the most dangerous. They shall invite you in, claim themselves to be naught but your salvation in the night. Shower you with affection but beware for may be laced with an inconceivable use of the word. It's a word that may mean not what they think it means.

Their mask is an air of elegance. Their monstrousness is claimed to be skin deep. Beware, however, their compulsion may not be for the blood of those they cross their paths but their souls. These are the ones that consume all of you and leave an empty husk.

This is the face that you must run from and don't look back.

Comissioned by Napoleon III and then overseen by Baron Haussmann, the Paris Opera as it was then called, was designed by Charles Garnier who at the time was an unknown thirty-five year old architect. Construction started in 1862 and ended in 1874 but the first opera wasn't held there until January 15, 1875.

During a performance, a part of the ceiling fell on an audience member which partially inspired Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera.

The tour guide told us that after all his efforts and the amazing success of the construction, Charles Garnier wasn't invited to the opening and had to purchase a ticket to see the opera himself.

Performances still take place here (while we were there they were lighting the stage for a ballet that afternoon) although the performances mostly consist of ballets. Most operas are conducted in the Opéra Bastille.

This is a tribute to the legendary silent film star Lon Chaney by John R. Pleak. The Man of a Thousand Faces is depicted in several of his most famous roles. The work was done in watercolor and pencil on paper.

This will probably be my last photo of the year. I haven't been nearly as active as I'd have liked to have been this year, and hopefully I'll rectify that next year. Happy holidays everyone, and see you next year!
