Belgian garage band Phantom invites french pop icon Lio for a rumble. At the tender age of sixteen Lio conquered all european charts with "Banana Split", a million seller in 1980. The joyfull Spector-goes-electro track hit number one in Belgium, France and Italy. An English version penned by Ron and Russell Mael (Sparks) did well in Britain too. Since then Lio has enjoyed numerous other successes in both music and cinema.
Now she returns to the land where it all began for her and to the music of her heart, unashamed pure rock'n'roll. Completed in three days, the album is driven by the energetic sounds of Liège based combo Phantom. Imagine Debbie Harry backed by the Ramones and you'll have a fair picture of what's going on here.

Qu'il s'agisse de show-business ou de la vie même, il y a des pages qu'on hésite à tourner, de peur de voir ce qui se cache derrière le rideau. Une histoire figée, une carrière bien définie; souvent les raisons ne manquent pas pour fermer les livres avant la fin. Et parce que Lio n'est pas forcément celle que vous croyez, les pages, chez elle, se tournent quatre par quatre; les projets s'enchaînent, sans jamais se ressembler.
En décidant de rejoindre le mystérieux backing-band cagoulé de chez Freaksville, l'ex-punkette troque le rouge carmin contre le punk sang, revenant à ses premiers amours débridés et insouciants.
Toutes guitares dehors, rythmes sales gosses, comptines salées sucrées mêlant la candy pop... les chansons s'enfilent comme des épingles sous la peau punk, littéralement underground parce ressuscitant les morts tant aimés, des Cramps à Bijou en passant par les Ramones.
Soutenu par Miam Monster Miam sur des riffs toxiques blues venus d'ailleurs (la Belgique donc...), mixé par Gilles Martin (dEUS, Venus, Dominique A), Phantom feat Lio est donc un instant volé qui grave sur disque la violence romantique de ceux qui ont arrêté de compter. Et si Lio crie "Je ne suis pas encore prête" sur le single de l'album, c'est encore un masque qui cache beaucoup d'amour.
Car l'album est également une retrouvaille entre l'ex-punkette et le frère de coeur, Jacques Duvall, auteur des plus grands hold-up de la belle. Résumons: une chipie au micro, un vieux cow-boy aux textes et des guitares qui ondulent....
Phantom feat Lio multiplie les coups de griffes ("Ta cervelle est en grève", "La fidélité" en duo avec Duvall) et quand l'un écrit les notes, l'autre les chante dans un haut parleur sur le très Who "Mon nouveau jules marche sur l'eau". Après Marie France et Jacques Duvall (encore lui!), Phantom invite donc Lio à se multiplier sur ce concept-album enregistré live (2 jours de studio à Liège, Belgique), pratiquant à l'envie le coup de ceinturon comme les caresses ("Le jour de ma naissance") entre ombres et lumières.
Et si derrière les rideaux on retrouve souvent d'autres fantômes, quelques jeux de lumières et un palpitant au maximum, il en est ici de même, Lio s'offrant avec le groupe de chez Freaksville une seconde enfance et un nouvel amour du risque; celui qui ne l'a jamais quitté depuis ses débuts. C'est même le titre de l'une des chansons de l'album; c'est ce qu'on appelle la logique de ceux qui restent fidèles aux trajectoires.

I just felt like making a basic wallpaper from the Phantom. Without the stand, and a better background.
This was one of the participants in the Lancashire Automobile Club's Manchester to Blackpool Veteran and Vintage Car Run in June 1979. It's the 1930 Rolls Royce Phantom II of Mr P Keogh of Bolton, and the programme of the event had this note about the vehicle:

The car bears its original touring body by Barker. Built for the Maharajah of Parlikeredi including imitation mother of pearl dashboard and white steering wheel. Registered by the Maharaja in England with its present registration GK 1148 and used by him here before being shipped to India in about 1930 where it remained until 1972.

The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is a tandem two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor fighter/fighter-bomber originally developed for the United States Navy by McDonnell Aircraft. It first entered service in 1960 with the U.S. Navy. Proving highly adaptable, it was also adopted by the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Air Force, and by the mid-1960s had become a major part of their respective air wings.
The Phantom is a large fighter with a top speed of over Mach 2.2. It can carry over 18,000 pounds (8,400 kg) of weapons on nine external hardpoints, including air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground missiles, and various bombs. The F-4, like other interceptors of its time, was designed without an internal cannon. Later models incorporated a M61 Vulcan rotary cannon. Beginning in 1959 it set 15 world records for in-flight performance, including an absolute speed record, and an absolute altitude record.
During the Vietnam War the F-4 was used extensively; it served as the principal air superiority fighter for both the Navy and Air Force, and became important in the ground-attack and reconnaissance roles late in the war. The Phantom has the distinction of being the last U.S. fighter flown to attain ace status in the 20th century. During the Vietnam War the USAF had one pilot and two weapon systems officers (WSOs), and the US Navy one pilot and one radar intercept officer (RIO), achieve five aerial kills against other enemy fighter aircraft and become aces in air-to-air combat. The F-4 continued to form a major part of U.S. military air power throughout the 1970s and 1980s, being gradually replaced by more modern aircraft such as the F-15 Eagle and F-16 in the U.S. Air Force; the Grumman F-14 Tomcat in the U.S. Navy and the F/A-18 Hornet in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps.
The F-4 Phantom II remained in use by the U.S. in the reconnaissance and Wild Weasel (suppression of enemy air defenses) roles in the 1991 Gulf War, finally leaving service in 1996.[7][8] It was also the only aircraft used by both U.S. flight demonstration teams: the USAF Thunderbirds (F-4E) and the US Navy Blue Angels (F-4J).The F-4 was also operated by the armed forces of 11 other nations. Israeli Phantoms saw extensive combat in several Arab–Israeli conflicts, while Iran used its large fleet of Phantoms in the Iran–Iraq War. Phantoms remain in front line service with seven countries, and in use as an unmanned target in the U.S. Air Force. Phantom production ran from 1958 to 1981, with a total of 5,195 built, making it the most numerous American supersonic military aircraft

One of the weirdest Phantoms - formerly owned by DJ Antoine.
This is the original artwork for the January 21, 1955, episode of "The Phantom", which is my all-time favorite comic strip. I bought it online in an auction (not eBay).
In this episode pirates -- the Phantom's sworn enemy -- have taken over a cruise ship carrying among its passengers Diana Palmer (seen in the third panel) and her mom.
Mrs. Palmer had never understood why her daughter would waste her time on the Phantom when there were all these effete playboys and rich dilettantes lining up to marry her.
Of all the costumed heroes -- and he was the FIRST -- the PHANTOM is the only one who relies on good genes, a white Palomino, a pet wolf, a loyal and fierce tribe of pygmy poison people (the Bandar), and a personal fortune to get him past bad times and bad people. He also has this stone fox of a girlfriend (Diana Palmer, a skilled 'aviatrix' and world-class tennis player), a skull throne -- THE Skull Throne -- and the coolest home on the face of the earth, the Skull Cave.
Diana's been away for a month and hasn't had a chance to write? The PHANTOM broods for about two seconds and puts on a hat, sunglasses, and a checkered trenchcoat; leaves Africa for the States; and breaks heads until he finds her and knows she's OK.
That's love.
Many "super"-type heroes have elements of the PHANTOM's lifestyle: Batman, for instance, ripped off the Skull Cave with his Batcave and his wealth; but unlike the PHANTOM Batman isn't saving the world 24 hours a day. Batman clocks in at sundown, works all night, then sleeps it off the next day. Presumably, too, crime in Gotham City isn't always afoot; Batman, as billionaire socialite alter ego Bruce Wayne, mixes it up with the nation's wealthiest 1% whenever possible.
And who built the Batplane, the Bat-o-cycle, the Batmobile, the Batboat, etc? If Batman's got his own pygmies building this stuff for him, let's see 'em! And what kind of "hero" ADOPTS a teenage boy (Robin)?
Batman uses his big inherited bucks to give him an edge over the bad guys in the application of technology to whatever skills he's otherwise developed, such as detective work (including working undercover and surveillance) and crime scene analysis.
Batman has Bruce Wayne's fortune to thank for his own defense as well -- the miniaturized gas masks, the canisters of chemicals in his utility belt to bail him out of an endless array of tight jams, and the aforementioned Bat-vehicles aren't cheap. And when he's not sleeping, eating, socializing, and home-schooling Dick Grayson, he's MAKING REPAIRS on all these things? Right. And what's with the smoking jacket?
The PHANTOM, on the other hand, is wealthy like nobody's business. In his Treasure Room he has, among other things: a goblet cut from a single diamond once owned by Alexander the Great; the Golden Fleece; Excalibur; The Holy Grail; and a specially-designed display case with a single, slightly withered apple inside with two bites taken out of it! I think he has a LITTLE LULU collection in there somewhere too.
What impresses me, though, is that with all these chests full of precious stones and jewels and coins, this guy is as rich as Scrooge McDuck and you'd never know it.
I hope that answers anyone's questions about why I love the Phantom.
