The purpose of the test was to determine the impact force, versus time, due to the impact, of a complete F-4 Phantom -- including both engines -- onto a massive, essentially rigid reinforced concrete target (3.66 meters thick). Previous tests used F-4 engines at similar speeds. The test was not intended to demonstrate the performance (survivability) of any particular type of concrete structure to aircraft impact. The impact occurred at the nominal velocity of 215 meters per second (about 480 mph). The mass of the jet fuel was simulated by water; the effects of fire following such a collision was not a part of the test. The test established that the major impact force was from the engines. The test was performed by Sandia National Laboratories under terms of a contract with the Muto Institute of Structural Mechanics, Inc., of Tokyo.

Every Phantom squadron of the RAF was on display during IAT 1983. XV571 is a FG.1 of 43 squadron (RAF Leuchars).
Apparently it was 'zapped' by 323 squadron of the Dutch Air Force: the archer Diana on the splitter plate, in front of the intake.

XV406 has the markings of 29 Squadron.It's now preserved in the Solway Aviation Museum at Carlisle airport.

McDonnell Douglas Phantom FGR.2 of 56/74 Squadrons RAF (carrying dual markings) at Duxford on 4th July 1992.
Phantom ship is named for its resemblance to a ghost ship sailing along the lake. Despite looking rather small it's actually 500 feet long and reaches 170 feet into the air. It is also the oldest rock exposed in the caldera, dating back to lava that hardened some 400,000 years ago.

Among Crater Lake's many fascinating geological features is a small island. In foggy conditions, the island looks very much like a ship. Hence, it was named "Phantom Ship"

McDonnell Phantom FGR.2 XV406. Ex RAF. First flew in 1969. Very nice to see a well preserved Phantom.
Beautiful performance by all the cast and the team.. superb lighting and music. This is Phantom of the Opera. I wish I could go again one more time to get some more shots...
Hamza Ali Abbasi performed real well as the Phantom. Beautiful dialog delivery and expression with hands.. along with Aisha Ommaya as Christine.
