Field Trip Year 1 Petroleum Engineering

More than 300 ChE students, alumni and friends tailgated with beloved Professor Emeritus John McKetta on the front lawn of the Chemical & Petroleum Engineering Building Saturday, September 21 before the Texas vs. Kansas State football game.

Historic Scoates Hall on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. The Classical Revival style building was constructed in 1932 as the Agricultural Engineering Building. The building has a two-stored entryway with elaborate cast iron and stone ornamentation. Animal motifs around the building include goat heads and owls.

In 1945, the Texas A&M University Board of Directors named the building in honor of Daniels Scoates, professor and head of the Department of Agricultural Engineering from 1919 to 1939. The building was designated as a Historic Landmark of Agricultural Engineering in 1978 by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers.

The old Agricultural Engineering Building was one of ten buildings constructed during a five-year period from 1928 to 1933 for the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (renamed Texas A&M in 1963). The others included the 1929 Chemistry Building, 1930 Cushing Memorial Library, 1930 Hart Hall, 1931 Alton Hall, 1932 Administration Building (now Jack K. Williams Administration Building), 1932 Veterinary Hospital Building (now Haynes Engineering Building), 1932 Petroleum Engineering & Geology Building (now the Michel T. Halbouty Geosciences Building), 1932 Animal Industries Building, and the demolished 1933 Horse Barn (also known as the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station Annex Building).

Historic Cushing Memorial Library on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. The Neoclassical style building was constructed in 1930 and was the first freestanding library on campus. The library was named after Col. Edward Benjamin Cushing, an 1880 graduate and Chairman of the Board of Regents for the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (renamed Texas A&M in 1963). Edward Cushing was responsible for preserving the debt-ridden school during his 1912-1914 tenure on the Board. He used his own funds to obtain credit to help keep the school in operation and led a campaign to keep state lawmakers from consolidating it with the University of Texas.

Today the building is known as the Cushing Memorial Library and Archives.
