رشته مهندسی نفت را می توان شاخه ای از مهندسی دانست که به مطالعه ی فعالیت های مرتبط با تولید هیدروکربن ها می پردازد. این هیدروکربن ها می توانند یا به صورت نفت خام و یا به شکل گاز طبیعی در مخازن باشند. فعالیت های مرتبط با اکتشاف و تولید عموماَ در بخش های مرتبط با صنایع بالا دستی نفت و گاز انجام می شوند. در حقیقت، مهندسی نفت بر ارزیابی مقدار حجم قابل بازیابی از منابع نفتی و گازی تمرکز دارد که این موضوع، نیازمند درکی عمیق از رفتار فیزیکی نفت، گاز و آب موجود در سنگ های متخلخل و تحت فشار بالا است.
