NEW DAWN FADES - THE STORY OF JOY DIVISION, by Brian Gorman, sold out at Greater Manchester Fringe Festival in July 2013 before going on a UK tour.
Directed by actor NEIL BELL (a familiar face in TV’s Downton Abbey and Coronation Street, plus the cult movie Dead Man’s Shoes), this is the classic story of four ordinary lads who, inspired by the punk revolution of the 1970s, came together to form one of the most influential bands of all time. Lead singer Ian Curtis' suicide in 1980, and the band's transformation into the hugely successful New Order.
This stage production combined the band's history with the city of Manchester and Salford, taking inspiration from Curtis' enigmatic lyrics, and involving many real-life characters such as Roman General Julius Agricola (who built the military encampment in the 5th century AD) AND Dr John Dee (Elizabeth the First's adviser).
MICHAEL WHITTAKER played the iconic Ian Curtis, with NATALIE-MARIE PERRY as his wife Debbie. Joy Division band members Barney Sumner, Peter Hook, and Stephen Morris were played by SEAN CROKE, GUY WILLS, and ANDREW MICHAEL GROGAN.
Tony Wilson provided LEE JOSEPH with some mighty big shoes to step into, while GILES BASTOW played band manager Rob Gretton. SEAN MASON completed the cast as eccentric record producer Martin Hannett.

The Hacienda hosted Madonna’s first UK appearance, a two song set which was filmed for Channel 4’s music show "The Tube" in 1984. The audience in the club weren't very impressed by her lip-synched performance, with the notable exception of Rob Gretton, who offered her £50 if she’d do another set later on. She told him to fuck off....
A mid-1990s ad for the Warner reissues of the JD and NO back catalogue on CD. Don't they look beautiful all together? And what a catalogue (before it was sullied by all those crap compilations and "Get Ready" and "WFTSC")!

Peter Hook and Superintendent Mark Kenny present a cheque to Salford City Radio's Chair, Cllr Jim King.
Officers at Salford have teamed up with Manchester music legend Peter Hook (of New Order and Joy Division fame) to help save their local community radio station.
GMP has worked closely with Salford City Radio for a number of years, using the station as a platform to share crime prevention messages with the local community. However, the local radio station, which is largely run by volunteers, was in danger of being shut down this year and they had to launch crowdfunding campaign in order to renew their broadcasting licence.
The partnership team at Salford were keen to help the station, knowing the value that it holds for its listeners. They managed to allocate an impressive £1,000 of funds directly from the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) to help the station reach their fundraising goal of £10,000.
Peter Hook (pictured) also got involved, donating £1,000 towards the station when he heard it faced closure.
On Friday 30 June, a cheque was presented to the radio station by Peter Hook, as well as Supt Mark Kenny on behalf of GMP, for the sum of £2500 - a combination of the monies donated by Salford division, Peter Hook and £500 from the local authority.
Supt Mark Kenny said: “I am pleased that Salford officers have come together with our local authority and other community members to help keep Salford City Radio up and running. Here at Salford we have a long standing relationship with the station and have a regular slot on their airwaves to get crime prevention messages and appeals out to the public.
“The fact the money donated comes from POCA means that we have taken money from criminal’s pockets and put it back into the community, which is a fantastic achievement.
“I’d also like to thank PC Paul Hook and the rest of the partnership team at Salford for helping to make this possible.”
Thanks to this contribution and the support of partners and individuals in the community, Salford City Radio has now announced it has renewed its broadcasting license for the next five years.

Reportedly the first record with a holographic cover (I've done my best to photograph the hologram on TFRP No. 155), FAC 96 was a 7" single, "Telstar" b/w "Telstar In A Piano Bar" by Ad Infinitum.
Ad Infinitum was a project by New Order's bassist Peter Hook and Lindsay Wilson (the then wife of Tony Wilson).
This single was a cover of the Joe Meek classic "Telstar" and was released in Feb/March1984 in a unique hologram sleeve.
The A-side "Telstar" featured Hooky and a couple of Stockholm Monsters performing an electronic version of the track. Lindsay apparently sang vocals but they were unused because of legal complications.
The flipside, "Telstar In A Piano Bar", featured then ACR keyboardist Andy Connell and Simply Red's Tim Kellet, who was also working with Durutti Column at the time, on trumpet.
Putting the Fast in Belfast 5 (Stiff Little Fingers & Guests)
I had no way to get the D750 in to the gig so settled for my little TG-6. Not really the ideal tool for the job. I just used it on automatic settings & happy enough with some of the pictures but I’d much prefer to have got the big camera in.

A number of you have requested a close-up version of FAC 36, the US ad campaign for Joy Division's "Closer"... so here it is!
FAC 36 was the advertising campaign for the US release of Joy Division's "Closer" LP (FACTUS VI). The main thrust of the campaign was a series of three press ads in "Rolling Stone", which was the leading American rock magazine at the time.
The ad, in this case page 37 of the June 11th, 1981 issue of "RS", can be seen in close-up detail here. One presumes it was designed by Peter Saville.
