In 1985, Factory Records started releasing cassettes in the UK for the first time. Perversely - typically - the label chose to package them lavishly, in oversized linen boxes rather than the usual plastic cases.
New Order's "Low-life" was the first to be release, in Summer 1985, and by 1986, they'd got round to releasing the three Joy Division albums.

True Faith
Manchester Art Gallery

True Faith explores the ongoing significance and legacy of New Order and Joy Division through the wealth of visual art their music has inspired. Curated by Matthew Higgs, Director of White Columns, New York and author and film-maker Jon Savage with archivist Johan Kugelberg, True Faith is centred on four decades’ worth of extraordinary contemporary works from artists including Julian Schnabel, Jeremy Deller, Liam Gillick, Scott King, Mark Leckey, Glenn Brown and Slater Bradley, all directly inspired by the two groups. Also featuring Peter Saville’s seminal cover designs, plus performance films, music videos, fashion and posters from John Baldessari, Barbara Krüger, Lawrence Weiner, Jonathan Demme, Robert Longo, Raf Simons and Kathryn Bigelow, True Faith provides a unique perspective on these two most iconic and influential Manchester bands.

Last night I went to see Unknown Pleasures: A Joy Division Celebration from Peter Hook & The Light and this is the only photograph I got to take. My camera was deemed as having a "too large" lens and was confiscated by "security" on the way in.
Bastards!
On the other hand; the show was great.
The flyer featured is for a forthcoming concert by Peter Hook at the Shadowplay festival in Belgium this Summer.
Recently watched 24 Hour Party People which reminded me of some pictures I took of Joy Division in Mountford Hall....and here they are. They were supporting The Buzzcocks. As I recall, they played somewhat better than the headliners.

Peter Hook on playing the bass guitar: “My advice is: wear it low, play it high. Although, as my chiropractor keeps telling me, judging by my cracked discs and nerve trouble, I shouldn't have.”

This is the image I was asked, by Nick Bell Design, to do for Warner/Chappell's 200th anniversary celebrations. The song was chosen for me and, fortunately, it is by one of my all-time favourite bands! It's one of 10 pieces designed by various designers including Michiel Schuurman, Nick Bell, Job Wouters, Fanette Mellier and Julia now showing at Stolenspace Gallery, Brick Lane, London - www.stolenspace.com/.

PETER HOOK: was born in Salford in 1956 and is best known as the bassist and co-founder of iconic Manchester bands Joy Division and New Order. Hook formed the band which was to become Joy Division with Bernard Sumner in 1976. Following the death of lead singer Ian Curtis in 1980, the band reformed as New Order, with Hook playing bass with them until his acrimonious departure in 2007. In recent years Peter has been involved in several musical collaborations, currently creating music with his own band ‘Peter Hook and the Light’.
GREATER MANCUNIANS is a Manchester College student led landmark photography project (supported by Manchester City Council). It features those people born, bred, or who have made their home within the current Greater Manchester boundary and who have in some way culturally shaped the city and its surrounding boroughs.
The project will be published and exhibited in a major city centre exhibition in 2021/22.
