“The Strike”
For more than a year, Westmoreland Coal Company had been developing a new mine above Stonega, Va. The new facility would feed into a state-of-the-art coal preparation (or “washing”) plant to remove impurities before being loaded into rail cars using a flood loader. The new mine and plant were named “Wentz,” to honor one of the more influential families in the corporate leadership chain for Westmoreland, and its predecessor in southwestern Virginia, the Stonega Coke & Coal Company. Developed at a capital cost of $6.5 million in 1967 ($70 million in current dollars). Initially, the high quality metallurgical coal from Wentz would be destined for U.S. Steel’s Ensley Works near Birmingham.
All this progress was to be celebrated in the pages of Southern Railway’s company magazine, “Ties.” The first train to be loaded at Wentz would happen on the morning of August 2, 1967. Four SD35s were washed for the occasion, and staff writers and photographers were dispatched to the facility.
Obviously not by coincidence, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, and Firemen (BLF&E) called a strike at 12:01 AM on the big day of the first train. The Interstate Railroad had not agreed to Decision 282 from 1963 that allowed for the elimination of locomotive firemen by attrition. All other major railroads had (including the Interstate’s parent, Southern Railway). With all operations of both the Interstate, and Southern’s Appalachia district based at the small (but very busy) yard at Andover, Va., the picket lines met the union employees of both railroads. No one crossed, of course, so the loading of the train at the new mine at Wentz was handled by an officer crew.
The strike would last nearly five months before settlement on December 22, 1967. Earlier—on October 29th—a dynamite blast under a 51-car coal train at a small trestle across the South Fork of Powell River near “Furnace Dip” in Big Stone Gap turned the strike in an ugly direction. Several cars, plus the caboose, were derailed, and dragging equipment damaged a quarter mile of track. Thankfully there were no casualties. The perpetrators were later apprehended by the FBI, charged, and convicted. All were former Southern or Interstate employees. They would never work for the railroad again.
Going back to the first Wentz train on August 2, 1967, I was alerted by a friend that morning of the strike, and the movement of that first train toward Birmingham. A Southern union road crew had been called and driven to the still-open depot at Big Stone Gap, Va. to relieve the officer crew. I was standing off to the side with my 35mm camera as a conference with the crew (and probably their local union chairman) was held. I’m not sure what was said, but after several minutes the management crew kicked off the brakes and departed, and the union crew members would be sent home---for a very long “vacation.”
None of that is apparent in this photo except the sense that something is amiss. No one is smiling. There’s no hint at the violence that would come, but clearly this is a textbook case of a management-labor stare down. I framed a few shots of train 82 with four clean SD35s, 51 loaded “Big Red” hoppers, and a caboose and went on to do other things that day.
The article on Wentz appeared in the October 1967 issue of “Ties,” but of course there was no mention of the strike. The narrative and accompanying photos were informative and upbeat about the future of the Appalachian coal industry---and the railroads that carried their commodity to market.
St. George ...
Putin is increasingly generating himself in his nationalism as St. George in the media, while Donald Trump now often generates himself as God's messenger for the Bible-belt, e.g. in the courtroom next to Jesus, and it has an effect on his followers, as well as he is generating himself as perpetrator as victim ...
Two pictures that couldn't be more different and yet they have something important in common ...
the picture on the left shows St. George with a sword, defeating the dragon and is by Hilma Af Klint ...
the one on the right is by Wassily Kandinsky and also shows St. George slaying the dragon on horseback ...
The legend of the dragon slayer Gregory, who frees the country from a tyrannical dragon if the people allow themselves to be baptized in return, emerged in the 12th century and is recorded in the medieval text collection Legenda aurea.
St. George is one of the fourteen holy helpers. He is the patron saint of various countries, noble families, cities, knightly orders and scouts. The first name George (and its linguistic variations) is one of the most popular first names.
Its symbol in heraldry is the George Cross. The red cross on a white background is included in many coats of arms and flags. In addition to the cross of St. George, the dragon and his depiction as a knight with a lance on a horse are also used to identify the saint.

Twelve days after the Islamic terrorist attack in downtown Vienna. It occurred in the vicinity of the Jewish City Temple and the Ruprechtskirche, the oldest church of Vienna, whose reflection you can see in the picture on the left. They are located in the so-called "Bermudadreieck" ("Bermuda Triangle"), a very popular nightlife district.
At 8 pm of November 2 a lone gunman, who was identified later as a 20-year old a dual citizen of Austria and North Macedonia of Albanian ethnic origin and IS sympathizer born in Austria, started shooting at people here. At that time the nigthtlife district was crowded with people enjoying a very mild last evening before new COVID-19 restrictions with restaurants, pubs and bars having to close came into force. When he was shot dead by the police nine minutes later, he had killed four persons and injured 23 others.
Among the four civilians killed was "a 21-year-old Muslim Austrian man originally from North Macedonia" like the perpetrator himself. The other victims were an Austrian woman, a man of Chinese origin and a young German student who was working as a waitress in a bar. Injured people are citizens from Austria, Germany, Slovakia, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, China and Luxembourg.
Three heroes were praised for their actions: a Palestinian and two Turkish-Austrian men, who saved a wounded officer and an elderly woman by carrying them into safe places and to ambulances while the shooting was going on.

portraits at the Uffizi, Florence. He was one the many that were horrified at the excessive spending to build St. Peter's, and the use of indugences and gold pillaged from the Americas. The Catholic Church lost many followers. Of course the politics of England and Henry VIII's lust did not harm the movement either. A perfect storm.
History runs deep though, and some of his views were blamed for horrors that were perpetrated in the next centuries.
On 13 November, a bomb attack occurred in a busy street in Istanbul, leaving six dead, including two children aged 9 and 15, and 81 injured. Attacks of this kind, that is, attacks in which random innocent men, women and children are maimed and killed, are for me among the most heinous crimes I can possibly imagine.
But the quick success of the investigation and the manhunt - the perpetrator was caught and presented to the public within a very short time - seems very strange to me. The perpetrator is said to be a Syrian national who describes herself as a supporter of the PKK and the PYD, its Syrian sister party, as well as its militia YPG, and admits to having received the order for this attack from the PKK. The PKK, however, vehemently denies involvement.
To commission a terrorist attack and then deny it would be unusual, to say the least. Moreover, terrorist attacks, as reprehensible as they may be, usually have a purpose, for example, to sow unrest and then profit from it, to free comrades-in-arms, to attack hated people and/or ways of life, to take revenge for something, to wage war in this way - whatever. In any case, the perpetrators of terrorist attacks are always interested in a subjective or objective benefit. A terrorist attack that, apart from the victims and their relatives, only harms the perpetrators but benefits the enemy all the more, is actually inconceivable. And that is exactly what is supposed to have happened here! The only beneficiary of this attack is Erdogan, who now has good arguments to take military action against the PKK and the YPG, and who can now play the strong man in the NATO accession negotiations of Sweden and Finland. Besides, elections are coming up...
Today, during a smoke break, I was face to face with a Turkish colleague who is not religious and not an Erdogan supporter, but who is not particularly politically engaged either, and I approached her cautiously about this issue. But she immediately said that it was absolutely clear to her that Erdogan himself was behind these attacks. And all the Turks she knows see it the same way, she said. "So I'm not alone in this view?" I asked, just to be sure. "No, no, not at all!" she answered.
The perpetrators eyeing my Rough Guide before they ran off with it and torn the cover off. Thankfully they didn't vandalise it with monkey piss.
And a high percentage of slaughterhouses workers commit crimes in the human world too. The psychological toll this takes on a person cannot be underestimated. Slaughterhouse work has been linked to a variety of disorders, including PTSD and the lesser-known PITS (perpetration-induced traumatic stress). It has also been connected to an increase in crime rates, including higher incidents of domestic and child abuse, sexual, alcohol and drug abuse as well as human crimes. Slaughter workers after killing the most innocent beings for 8 hours a day every day, they no longer care. Each time you eat an animal, you pay for a criminal to abuse, torture, kill a human being.
Care about your neighbor, save the slaughter worker and their families, give them a dignified job such as growing fruits and vegetables, care about your body, your health, care about the animals and our beautiful planet! Go Vegan!
We no longer need to eat animals in order to survive. This year (2025) I will be celebrating 40 years without eating animals. There are millions of people who have never eaten an animal in their lives and they live healthy lives.
We are all linked in this world, humans and animals! No action passes unnoticed under the sky, no matter how thick the slaughterhouses' walls are! The screams are still there even if your ears are plugged, and your eyes are looking away.
Be KIND! Kindness doesn't kill anyone!
A Refuge of Solitude
Glen Canyon, Arizona.
If you’ve been here before, it doesn’t take long for the desert to bake back into you, to be lulled into a sense of culture with it. All the shapes and patterns in the rock find their way into native american weavings and pottery, all the colors into the pastels of southwestern architecture. You smell it in every breath, you feel all of its extremes. I never would have come out here had I known how much I would mourn its loss. It’s not the same anymore…the crowds are overwhelming, the disregard and rudeness perpetrated on the landscape is too senseless. A sacred place should soak into you, giving up its secrets slowly. There is an exchange of trust. But much of the land won’t show us it’s beauty anymore, after being graffitied by narcissistic morons, shocked by unnecessary noise, and trampled by selfie trophy hunters who only want to be there to say they were. Some years ago, on a hunch, my brother and I followed a non-descript track near Page. We parked in a wide spot and climbed up some promising slick rock to a plateau we had glimpsed from the highway. Hidden up here was a garden of Navajo sandstone. Domes and buttons of rock were everywhere, waiting to be seen up the striated slopes and on top of mini-buttes. Candy cane swirls drained into pools, dry now, but waiting to fill with the rains of monsoon season. This spot was not a secret, but neither was it on a map or in a guide book, and there was none of the usual evidence of visitors. And so it became our secret spot to return to over the years, a place we could pretend we didn't have to share, a rare find in the southwest these days. We never saw another human there. It held silence so intense you could hear the workings of the wings of ravens. It was a refuge of solitude. I am thankful I saw so much of the west before it was overrun; I feel some small portion of what the indigenous must have felt with the great anglo migration. On our recent trip the road had been graveled, and under our plateau was a large parking area, half filled with RV’s. An artist would probably say that some images speak to you. But in the face of solitude lost, there’s not much left to say.
Heedless, Clueless, Faceless, Speechless.
So many disasters in progress. Will there be consequences for the perpetrators?
I woke up again tonight. That cold-blooded murder on that rainy day continues to haunt my head. Who is the perpetrator and what was his motive?
I relive those fatal hours in patches as if that is the only thing I remember from that night. As if that part of town is lifted and got stuck in my head.
What do we overlook, what are we missing?
Can you solve the murder and find the killer?

Irlanda - Galway - The King's Head Pub
ENGLISH
The Kings Head Pub is located on High Street in the heart of Galway’s Latin Quarter. This landmark pub has earned a fantastic reputation for live music and comedy, good honest hearty food and great craic over three floors.
The Kings Head dates back over 800 years with research showing the building in existence since the 13th century. Speed’s famous map of Galway – drawn in 1651 – shows 15 High Street as one of the tallest and most prominent buildings in the town with the impressive Bank’s Castle adjoining it to the rear.
City of the Tribes:
The building has several links to the 14 Tribes of Galway; above the two fireplaces you’ll find marriage stones from the Martin, Bodkin and Lynch families.
Mayor’s House:
The Kings Head, however, is forever linked to the Lynch tribe given that the building was the home of the Mayor of Galway, Thomas Lynch Fitz-Ambrose in 1654.
Execution of King Charles I:
Following the execution of the King of England Charles I on 3rd Jan 1649, Cromwell’s army came to Ireland to assert their authority. Lead by one of Cromwell’s most loyal and trusted henchmen, Col. Peter Stubbers, they laid siege to Galway.
Stubbers seizes the Mayor’s city, his office and his home:
After Galway’s surrender in April 1653, Stubbers became the town’s military Governor and when the Mayor and Corporation objected to the outrages being perpetrated on the citizens of Galway they were forcibly removed from office in 1654. To add insult to injury Stubbers not only replaced Lynch Fitz-Ambrose as Mayor but also seized his splendid house in High Street, now home to The Kings Head Pub.

It really matters to remind of the Agent Orange war crime perpetrated during the Vietnam War. The abominable consequences of dioxin use are passed from generation to generation. On this candid picture shot in steep narrow stairs, the fortuitous flag on the roof clothesline, the striped kitty T-shirt and the stylish anklet were just incredible godsends. This could be the best candid shot (the most powerful capture) of my 100-photo series on the Vietnamese people and their diasporas.

There’s a Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox) in this photo... Can your eyes find it?! 🐍
: :
This particular rattler definitely had a clear opportunity to sink it’s venomous fangs into the flesh of a human leg as he/she was almost accidentally stepped on (because, spectacular camouflage! 🙈) ...but instead, the snake chose to protect itself by slithering away into the thorny underbrush, where it could intensely stare-down it’s perpetrator in shadowed safety...
: :
Rattlers are often perceived as vicious, aggressive creatures with malicious intent. Growing up in Jersey & studying the ocean, I was definitely guilty of holding this misunderstanding. But after a few years living in the Southwest and now Texas, I dare to differ. Now, I’m not saying we shouldn’t practice utmost mindfulness & caution around these creatures (I mean, they ARE a pit viper! 😳), but more often than not, rattlesnakes have zero desire nor intention to harm a human. In fact, they actually want nothing to do with humans, and striking is a big expense of their energy...so if the option to escape is available, they will eagerly exercise that option (as was demonstrated in this specific encounter).
: :
I snapped a few photos, and observed this unique reptile for a couple of minutes from a safe distance (thank goodness for a zoom lens 👍). If I looked away then back, it took serious effort to see the snake again. He/she didn’t rattle or hiss, just lots of curious sniffs with the tongue. Mutual respect. I said goodbye to my new friend, and moved along. A quick check back to this hide-out about 15 minutes later revealed the snake had moved along also...

My new novel
B♭ (B Flat)
In the western reaches of Los Angeles, at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Sepulveda, a seventeen–story alabaster tower rose against the sky. This was the headquarters of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office.
The afternoon light struck its white façade, casting back a cold, austere beauty. Before it stretched a broad lawn, a hush reigning there in stark contrast to the bustle of the city. On the front of the building, the names of the FBI and the Department of Veterans Affairs stood in bold relief, the weight of the nation inscribed in stone. Nearby lay the Los Angeles National Cemetery, where the memories of the past intertwined with the pulse of the present.
Just a few blocks away, in a hotel room, tension had taken on another form. The pale red carpet caught the glare of fluorescent light, while beyond the window the unending stream of cars along Wilshire flowed like a restless artery. The faint cry of sirens mingled with the city’s din, as if the collective strain of Los Angeles were seeping into this small room.
At the front, a makeshift stage bore the American flag and the FBI seal. Tripods stood in careful rows, monitors flashing between live feeds and scrolling headlines.
Cameron R. Bartlett, Director of the FBI, squared his shoulders. With a brief glance at the papers in his hand, he drew in a quiet breath and let his eyes travel over the gathered press. Behind his composure lay a grave unease, and a resolve as unyielding as steel.
“The incident is unfolding on a scale without precedent—” His voice, low but unwavering, filled the room. Instantly, the images on the monitors tightened every chest, sharpening the taut wire of tension. The journalists steadied their breathing, fingers trembling faintly over notebooks and cameras as the dissonance grew—between the director’s calm expression and the devastation flickering across the screens.
Some rushed to send out bulletins; others adjusted their zoom lenses, struggling inwardly to shape a sense of the whole. From a corner came the faint rustle of a page turning, the smallest sounds amplified by silence. And still the tense hour dragged on, as if the looming FBI building itself watched over the press room in mute witness.
Each time the footage wavered—smoke shifting, rubble parting to reveal a fleeting figure—the reporters’ eyes snapped to the screen. Pens scratched, shutters clicked, the faint patter of keys mingling with a silence taut enough to break.
Bartlett’s gaze lingered on each journalist, conveying a weight beyond words. That quiet pressure thickened the atmosphere, the air stretched to a thread’s breaking point. From outside came the muted hum of traffic, a distant siren’s wail—the world’s noise folding into the room’s stillness, underscoring the magnitude of what was unfolding.
At last, after answering questions in terse, measured replies, Bartlett concluded:
“That is all I can say at this time.”
His curt words gave way to a new stir, rippling through the hall. The cause lay on the monitors: another feed had appeared, bearing the caption in red, flashing in the corner—Madison Square Garden, New York City—the precise moment the carnage had begun.
The reporters in Los Angeles felt their breath catch. Following those numbers, they seemed to touch the pulse of another city across the continent. The images bound the two coasts together, weaving the entire nation into one mesh of suspense.
Then the screen shifted to a different stage—New York’s press room—where a man in a dark suit stood before the glare of flashbulbs.
Jack Vance. Once a colleague of Marcus’s at the Bureau. In rare fashion, he had left the FBI under the Department of Justice to join the Secret Service under Homeland Security. Years earlier, when Vance had headed the Violent Crimes Section, a hostage standoff erupted in Oakbridge, outside Washington, D.C. Orders from headquarters forced an early assault. In the chaos, a nineteen–year–old Black youth, misidentified as the suspect, was shot dead. The true perpetrator lay elsewhere, and Vance’s team had opposed the premature entry. Yet the assault had gone forward—under the command of none other than Bartlett, now before them on the screen. Later, in the Washington field office, Bartlett had ordered subordinates to alter the report, declaring that the assault had been Vance’s decision. Vance rose in silence, flung the papers onto the table, and struck Bartlett across the face. Officially, it had ended as Vance’s “voluntary resignation” before disciplinary measures. In truth, he had been cast out.
Now Vance’s voice, faintly delayed, overlapped with the Los Angeles air. Two distant cities shared the same gravity of silence. Pens stilled, eyes fixed on the screen. Each word, each gesture etched the outline of the disaster more sharply. The chain of images streaming through the network was not mere record, but a slice of history as it unfolded. The hush in the room stretched on, awaiting a break that never came. Breathing shallow, all present were held captive by the figure of Jack Vance.
The tension, unbroken, shifted its form. From the rear seats came a fresh murmur, loosening the taut balance. Several reporters pulled out their phones, screens glowing like scattered embers in the dimness. They were not receiving news alerts. It was a direct link, sent by an anonymous hand.
Beneath Los Angeles’s cold lights, the press room now bore the weight of three overlapping spheres—the New York briefing, the strange new footage, and the lingering echo of Vance’s voice. The reporters’ focus drifted to the unknown. It was not simply information. It was a forewarning.
Marcus Dane was the first to sense it. Standing in the aisle, watching his superior Bartlett, he noticed the stir among the journalists at the center. Several had received a live video link—from the perpetrators themselves. The same ploy that had reached Jack and the others at the Garden.
Marcus immediately checked the URL and forwarded it to Tom Caldwell, once a trusted colleague in the technical division.
The footage was unmistakable: the very same “Oval Office” where Professor Zakaria Haddad had taken his own life.
“Good afternoon. My name is Amir Nasser. I was a student of Professor Zakaria Haddad, who passed away just days ago.”
Amir leaned lightly against the desk, speaking in a gentle tone, revealing a side unseen until now.
“As he told you, we once lived quietly in Gaza. We were ruled by Hamas, by their weapons and their violence. They committed unspeakable killings against Israel. But could we have stopped them? No more than you can stop your own President from wielding the power of command. You may protest in your streets, but we had only silence, living under the shadow of informants and violence. And still your President sided with Israel, again and again, unleashing bombs until not even ruins remained. We, who offered no resistance, endured strike upon strike, invasion upon invasion. Hamas made us their shields, nesting beneath our hospitals, while we, above, became the targets.”
Amir’s voice was clear, almost luminous. His youth, his neatly combed hair, the strange stillness of his blue eyes—all drew the listeners in. Nothing in his demeanor suggested violence. He lifted a glass of water from the table, sipped, and continued.
“As Professor Haddad told you, all we were given was darkness. And what does an animal do when driven into darkness?” His eyes fell to the floor, words sinking like stones.
“We lost everything—our homes, our lovers, our families. Everything. Do you not call it unjust, to die with nothing left? Is it not the human way to confront those who take? To force them to grasp what it means to be robbed? What does it mean, America, that you drink your cola unchanged, while we are stripped bare?”
He paused, then smiled faintly.
“Jack, the weekend will be a busy one.”
The smile was open, disarming—and chilling.
“In these years, the Democrats’ tolerance has faded, and the Republicans have driven immigrants to the edge. So we, scattered across this nation, have shared our knowledge, and we have reached a conclusion. ICE, who have treated us as vermin, must be re-educated.”
Since the shift in power, ICE had grown ever harsher. With offices in nearly every state, their reach extended across the land. More than twenty thousand employees in all: some seventy-eight hundred in Enforcement and Removal Operations, sixty-five hundred in Homeland Security Investigations, six thousand in the legal branch known as OPLA.
“We gained a fragment of their data. Let me be honest—only a fragment. ICE is too vast, too diffuse. But we chose two places, Jack. Los Angeles and New York. And we will tell you. That is generous, is it not? You should be grateful.”
Amir’s smile remained as he concluded:
“But remember, our purpose is re-education. Wait for it, Jack. Until then.”

Bench at Museum Arnhem:
Inscription:
'Crack the pelvis so she lies right.
This is a mistake. When she dies you cannot repeat the act.
Bones will not grow together and the personality will not come back. She is going to sink deep into the moss, to get white and lighter. She is unresponsive to begging and self-absorbed.'
The artist Jenny Holzer calls the perpetrator to account for violence against a female victim and shows the irreversibility of the consequences of this violence.
I think I the location is correct but didn't get a GPS reading, anyway it looks right in hybrid view and the area has an interesting history.
The small building in the foreground may have been a butchery given the gallows on the right for lifting slaughtered animals, and the walls appear to be pise giving a cooler interior in summer, with only a single window for the same reason.
"Aarons Pass so named by James Blackman circa 1820 to acknowledge his native guide’s help in marking the trail from Bathurst to the Cudgegong River Valley. Soon after Lieutenant W M Lawson’s diary records “they crossed the Turon River, went North East to Crudene (sic) to a long granite hill where “the guide Aring or Aaron” after pointing out the direction of the country they were seeking, resolutely refused to move any further, as he feared the hostility of the tribe beyond his own saying: “Baal that not my country, there is where you are seeking, me go no further” and no inducement could alter his resolve.”
But it seems Aaron soon overcame his fears, perhaps assuaged by the white settlers protection for Lawson journal entry for 26 November circa 1821 records that Ering the black native led him “S.E. by S. through a fine grazing country to Troben called Davy” (Dabee or The Dabee Plains).
Aaron’s collaboration with the white settlers was also acknowledged in August 1822, W M Lawson, then Commandant at Bathurst requested brass plates for five of the local aboriginal chiefs, including Aaron “Chief of the Tabellbucco Tribe”.
Soon after W M Lawson was exploring the Goulburn River his journal entry on the 30th November 1822 says he enquired of his native guide “Ering” (Aaron) regarding the mouth of the river and the native replied “where the white man sits down”. Identifying Newcastle as the confluence and confirming the Goulburn as a tributary of the Hunter River.
In September 1823 Thomas Hawkins, was the acting coroner investigating the brutal murder of Peter Bray an assigned servant of William Lee at Bathurst Plains. Hawkins reported to the Judge Advocate “Earing, (Aaron) a black Chief of the Tabellbucoo Tribe states that he went to the hut in company with the Jurors and saw the tracks of the natives”…”the Jury are of the opinion from the statements of Earing, that the deed was perpetrated by the four Black Natives known by the names of Jackey, Taylor, Charley and Cougo-gal.” There is no evidence of any investigation into the events that precipitated the murder of Peter Bray or the motive of the four natives that Earing identified as the perpetrators.
In his History of Mudgee circa 1910, GHF Cox tells of Aaron’s aid to the Cox family “the faithful native guide Aaron having so frequently mentioned Dabee, in high terms” the Cox’s investigated and selected the property later known as “Rawdon…for many years it was used as a breeding station”. And then adds “Aaron, who was killed in a tribal warfare between the blacks at the long-water hole at Dabee”.
Rumours of Aaron’s death moved a correspondent identified as “Candid” to write to the Editor of The Sydney Gazette on Thursday 12 August 1824; “Do not the dispatches, that arrived at Head-quarters (Parramatta) in the beginning of this month affirm, that in an affair that took place at or near Mudjee (sic) five blacks were killed? Is old Aaron dead or alive? If dead in what way did he die?” A press clippings from the Cox family papers says “immense number of the native men women and children were slaughtered at Mudgee….And amongst them poor old Aaron, he was shot in the long reach of water at Dabee.” Thus Aaron’s forebodings were realised, murdered in alien tribal country probably by associates of the white men he led to the Cudgegong Valley and Dabee Plains
The pioneer Blackman; Lawson; Cox and Lee families lost a willing guide and servant commemorated at Aaron’s Pass. But I suspect the Aboriginal tribes of the Cudgegong, Capertee and Goulburn River Valleys had mixed feelings about Aaron, the Wiradjuri Tribal Chief who eagerly led the white dispossessors to their tribal country."

Chur is the capital and largest town of the Swiss canton of the Grisons and lies in the Grisonian Rhine Valley, where the Rhine turns towards the north, in the northern part of the canton. The city, which is located on the right bank of the Rhine, is reputedly the oldest town of Switzerland.
The official language of Chur is German, but the main spoken language is the local variant of Alemannic, known as Grisonian German. Romansh and Italian are significantly spoken in the city as a result of the trilingual identity of the canton.
On 1 January 2020 the former municipality of Maladers merged into Chur and on 1 January 2021 Haldenstein also merged.
Archaeological evidence of settlement at the site, in the Eastern Alps, goes back as far as the Pfyn culture (3900-3500 BC), making Chur one of the oldest settlements in Switzerland. Remains and objects from the Bronze and Iron Ages have also been found in the eastern sector of the current city's centre. These include Bronze Age Urnfield and Laugen-Melaun settlements from 1300 to 800 BC and Iron Age settlements from the 5th to 3rd centuries BC.
The Roman Empire conquered the area that then came to be known as the Roman province of Raetia in 15 BC. Under emperor Diocletian (late 3rd century AD), the existing settlement of Curia Raetorum (later Chur) was made the capital of the newly established province of Raetia prima.
In the 4th century, Chur became the seat of the first Christian bishopric north of the Alps. Despite a legend assigning its foundation to an alleged Briton king, St. Lucius, the first known bishop is one Asinio in AD 451. The bishop soon acquired great temporal powers, especially after his dominions were made, in 831, dependent on the Empire alone.
After the invasion of the Ostrogoths, it may have been renamed Theodoricopolis; in the 6th century it was conquered by the Franks. The city suffered several invasions, by the Magyars in 925–926, when the cathedral was destroyed, and by the Saracens (940 and 954), but afterwards it flourished thanks to its location, where the roads from several major Alpine transit routes come together and continue down the Rhine. The routes had been already used under the Romans but acquired greater importance under the Ottonian dynasty of the Holy Roman Empire. Emperor Otto I granted the town the right to collect tolls in 952 and appointed his vassal Hartpert as bishop of Chur in 958, giving the bishopric further privileges. In 1170 the bishop became a prince-bishop and kept total control over the road between Chur and Chiavenna.
In the 13th century, the town had some 1,300 inhabitants and was surrounded by a line of walls. In the 14th century, at least six fires damaged or destroyed the monasteries of St. Luzi and St. Nicolai, St. Martin's church and twice destroyed much of the town. The Gotteshausbund (League of the House of God) was formed in 1367 in Chur to resist the rising power of the Bishopric of Chur and the House of Habsburg. Chur was the chief town of the League and one of the places the Leagues' assemblies met regularly. A burgmeister (mayor) of Chur is first mentioned in 1413, The bishop's residence was attacked by the inhabitants in 1418 and 1422, when a series of concessions were wrung out of him.
On 27 April 1464, most of the town was destroyed in a fire, which only the bishop's estates and St. Luzi monastery survived. With the bishops' power waning as he came increasingly under the influence of the nearby Habsburg County of Tyrol, the citizens sent a delegation to Emperor Frederick III. The Emperor reconfirmed the historic rights of Chur and also granted them extensive new rights which freed the city from the bishop's power. In 1465 the citizens wrote a constitution which granted all governmental power to Chur's guilds. All government positions were restricted to guild members, allowing the guilds to regulate all aspects of life in Chur. Because guild membership was the only route to political power, local patricians and nobles quickly became guild members, often joining the winemakers guild.
The Chur lead League of the House of God allied with the Grey League and the League of the Ten Jurisdictions in 1471 to form the Three Leagues. In 1489 Chur obtained the right to have a tribunal of its own, but never had the title of Free Imperial City. In 1497–98, concerned about Habsburg expansion and with the Bishop of Chur quarrelling with Austria, the Three Leagues formed an alliance with the Swiss Confederation. In 1499 the Swabian War broke out between the Three Leagues and Austria and quickly expanded to include the Confederation. During the war, troops from Chur fought under the Bishop's Vogt Heinrich Ammann in the Lower Engadin, in Prättigau and near Balzers. Troops from Chur also took part in the 1512 invasion of the Valtellina and the Second Musso War in 1530–31.
In 1523 Johannes (Dorfmann) Comander was appointed parish priest of St. Martin's Church and began preaching the new faith of the Protestant Reformation. It spread rapidly and by 1525 the bishop had fled the city and Protestant services were taking place in the churches of St. Martin and St. Regula.[15] The Ilanz articles of 1524 and 1526 allowed each resident of the Three Leagues to choose their religion, and sharply reduced the political and secular power of the Bishop of Chur and all monasteries in League territory. By 1527 all of Chur, except the bishop's estates, had adopted the Reformation. On 1 January 1529 Abbot Theodore Schlegel was publicly beheaded. Bishop Thomas Planta, a friend of St. Charles Borromeo, tried, but without success, to suppress Protestantism. He died, probably poisoned, 5 May 1565.
During the 16th century the German language started to prevail over Romansh. In 1479 about 300 houses and stalls burned in another fire. Nearly a century later on 23 July 1574, a fire destroyed 174 houses and 114 stalls, or about half the city. Two years later on 21 October 1576, another 53 houses were burned. Two years after the 1576 fire, the perpetrator, Hauptmann Stör, was executed.
After the Napoleonic Wars, the Three Leagues became the canton of Graubünden in 1803. The guild constitution of the city of Chur lasted until 1839, while in 1874 the Burgergemeinde was replaced by an Einwohnergemeinde. When Graubünden became a canton in 1803, Chur was chosen as its capital.
And the aging school caretaker, like an agitated referee, trying to capture the perpetrators of this hideous act of vandalism, be it in the process of an innocent game or not...
In NYC... some wanted the perpetrators to build a monument very near to ground zero.
Pretty sure the folks out here in "fly over" country disagree.
- Good evening, I'm Tom Sanders. We interrupt this broadcast of SecondLifeNews on TV to bring you breaking news of a rave party incident! Our very own Sharon Bluefield is Live on the scene, let's go to her now for more details. Sharon?
- My hair? Good? Anything in my nose or teeth?
- (clears throat) Our apologies, dear viewers. Sharon seems to be having some technical difficulties with her in-ear microphone. Do we have her now? Sharon, can you hear me?
- Good evening, Tom. Yes, i can..
- Sharon, what can you tell us?
- Tom, I am in front of the recently opened STARBUTTS Cafe right now. Tonight, after several Karen reports went in, the local police had to be dispatched. In response, the police raided the compound, stopped the guests and perpetrators from terrorizing the neighborhood... Also Its being reported, that....
- Uhm... (looks at her papers) that the owners of the Cafe violated serious DMCA copyright regulations, also they are accused of illegal possession of military weapons, a large amount of drugs, and illicit money have also been found inside the owners office.. together with a bunch of wrapped up decomposing unidentified bodies. And even more disturbing, a whole underground level with a massive glass cage and an kidnapped and clearly confused and drugged up woman inside.
The Chief Inspector said, three main suspects were arrested, for dropping a super sexy party and hardcore beats, but also apparently, for having ties to a international human trafficking ring and using the Cafe as storefront for their operations.
- Thats all for now, Tom.. back to you! (longer break) ...you wanker.
- Cameraman.. Sharon, the mic is still on..
- Ah fuck..

Just back from a month in El Palo, Málaga. Dublin's in my blood...Howth in particular. But this El Palo month was the first time ever I didn't feel homesick. Usually the 1st week is pure "I want to go home" Tend to chill out for the next 2 weeks and actually enjoy 'being on holiday' Week 4 and I'm like a kid with "when are we going home?" in my head every day.
Howth, though I live 10 minutes away by train, is my spiritual home; if such a thing exists. It's a working port and also a traditional 'day at the seaside' venue for generations of Northside Dubliners. You can see these every day; Summertime week-ends especially. And you can smell the history of both the trawlermen and revellers if you close your eyes. And it's breathtaking.
I grew up in Finglas West; a North Dublin working class area, and each Sunday in Summer the Tenants Association ran buses to seaside locations around Dublin. Lunches would be packed and the Association would organise huge kettles of boiling water for tea-making. Claremont Beach in Howth was one of the favourite locations for these trips and it was then my love affair with Howth began.
The 3 pics were taken on different dates, during the evening or close to evening. The one on the left was taken from the back of Howth, close to the summit. There used to be a tram, the Hill of Howth Tram, that ran from the village right around the peninsula. I never travelled on it since the transport authorities, in one of the most egregious acts of vandalism perpetrated by the Irish State, decided to not only close it, but rip up the tracks in 1959. Some of original trams can be seen in transport museums and there have been various proposals to reinstate it but, as of now, it hasn't happened. There is a 'rare as hen's teeth' bus service that follows the route of the tram service but, even as a tourist attraction, the reinstatement of a tram would be wonderful.
The other two are Howth Harbour. I could have added hundreds more but it would have been a monstrous file. If you know Howth I hope you feel that they do it justice.
Excerpt from Old Town Bell: Welland | Adventures in Rose City History (wordpress.com):
The Town Bell: Rededicated during a ceremony at its present site in front of City Hall in Welland at 60 East Main Street in 2008, it was city clerk Doug Watt who essentially pulled the city bell from the wreckage of the old city hall that was torn down in 1959. Through the efforts of City Clerk, J.D Watt, the Bell was saved from the melting pot and would stay in a municipal storage shed for the next 20 years. It was not until City Clerk, David Barrett, led the charge to restore the historical bell that it found a home on March 12, 1981 at City Hall, 411 East Main Street, where it remained until its move to the new Civic Square at 60 East Main Street in 2005.
The plaque inscription reads:
Following an 1884 fire, in the Fire Hall at the north end of Cross Street, Mayor Swayze commissioned the Jones Troy Bell Foundry to construct a 1,235 pound bell at a cost of $1,111.50 to act as a Civic Fire Alarm. Delivered on November 19, 1884, the Town Bell was to be engraved with the names of the Town Officials, but the $3 fee for the work was challenged by Council, which likely led to the Bell’s incomplete inscription:
1884
F.Swayze, Mayor
D.A. Johnston, Reeve
H. Griffith, Deputy Reeve
…lems, Clerk and P.M.
The unfinished name refers to then Town Clerk and Police Magistrate E.R. Hellems. The Bell remained at Cross Street Fire Hall until 1901 when it was moved to the new Town Hall at King and Division Streets. The job of ringing the Bell at important times of the day was given to the Chief Constable, J.J. Ford, who so despised the task that he resigned in 1905 after a feud with Town Council over the responsibility.
Though Council passed a resolution in 1920 on the matter, the Police Department continued to refuse to ring the Bell. Council was forced to drop the issue but was consoled in 1921 when a By-Law gave them voting rights over all Police Department Funding. Suspiciously, the Bell striker was stolen that same year by an unknown perpetrator, and had to be replaced at Council’s expense. The Town Councillors would soon sympathize with the Police Department as the thundering bell, which hung above Council Chambers, was used to begin Council Meetings. Their plight was magnified by the unpredictable ringing of the Bell; it was once heard to ring 26 times in a row! By 1936, the continuing complaints and mounting deterioration of the bell tower put a stop to the customary ringing, and the bell hung silent until 1959 when City Hall was demolished.
I went to the Dollar Store tonight. Bought camera and tripod. But no pictures. Why?
On my way, there were five guys in a small group talking on the lawn near one of the small brick buildings. Their cars were parked next to the office building that's for rent.
(If you want to follow along at home, Flickrmail me and I'll send you the map/Google Earth link)
They weren't laughing. Hadn't been playing sports. Weren't loud. Just ... talking.
I went to the Dollar Store, figuring I'd get some shots on the way back.
There were still there, in a semicircle, facing each other, talking.
I didn't take pictures. Were they in the open to avoid their offices, which were bugged?
Who knows. I'm not big on this whole "sixth sense" thing, but something ... held me back from taking pictures.
Unless they're all killed in a gangland massacre - or perpetrate a terrorist outrage - I'll never who they were or what they were doing.
I've probably seen too many Tarantino movies.

Biography
Brian Hugh Warner (born January 5, 1969), better known by his stage name Marilyn Manson, is a professional musician. He is the lead singer of the industrial metal band that bears the same name. His stage name is formed from the names Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson.
Brian Hugh Warner was born on January 5th 1969 in Canton, Ohio. He attended Heritage Christian School. After transferring to and later graduating from Canton's GlenOak High School, Warner moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida with his family. While living in Fort Lauderdale, he studied journalism and theater at Broward Community College, and became the assistant entertainment editor of BCC's student newspaper, the Observer.
Romance
Warner's first serious relationship was with Melissa "Missi" Romero. As explained in his autobiography, during the production of "Antichrist Superstar," Missi became pregnant with Warner's child, but had an abortion during her second trimester. He has also been linked to Traci Lords and Jenna Jameson. Jameson wrote about her sexual encounter with Manson in her autobiography, How to Make Love Like a Porn Star: A Cautionary Tale in which she noted him as being "massively endowed". Manson was engaged to Rose McGowan, but their relationship ended around the time he became involved with burlesque dancer and fetish model model Dita Von Teese. Manson photographed Von Teese for the December 2002 issue of Playboy. Manson and Von Teese wed in December 2005 in the Irish home of friend Gottfried Helnwein. Von Teese filed for divorce as of December 2006. The divorce came through in January 2007. In April of 2007, Marilyn Manson's girlfriend, Evan Rachel Wood, admitted that they were actually a couple.
Marriage
Manson and Dita Von Teese started dating on Manson's 32nd birthday, and Manson proposed three years later on March 22, 2004. On December 3, 2005 (court documents say November 28), the couple was married in a non-denominational ceremony at Gurteen Castle in Kilsheelan, County Tipperary, Ireland, the home of Gottfried Helnwein. The wedding was officiated by surrealist film director and comic book writer Alejandro Jodorowsky. Dita Von Teese wore a royal purple silk taffeta gown by Vivienne Westwood, complete with train and petticoats worn over a Mr. Pearl couture corset, topped off by a tricorne hat by Stephen Jones, while Manson wore a John Galliano black silk taffeta tuxedo with velvet trim and a hat also crafted by Stephen Jones. They reportedly exchanged vows in front of approximately 60 guests, including burlesque dancer Catherine Delish, Lisa Marie Presley, Eric Szmanda, David Lynch, Jessicka and Christian Hejnal, and Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne. Vogue magazine ran a multiple-page feature on the wedding in its February 2006 issue. Just before his own wedding, Manson criticized Britney Spears' wedding to Kevin Federline, in which they celebrated by wearing personalized tracksuits: "If you're going to do something like getting married, it should have a sense of celebration to it. It should be grand and not in tracksuits!"
As of January 30, 2007 Manson and Dita Von Teese reportedly split after her filing for divorce due to "irreconcilable differences" according to Von Teese. ET.com along with People Magazine has claimed that Manson was having an extramarital affair with actress Evan Rachel Wood, which may or may not be the true cause of the split. Manson's alcohol abuse and distant behaviour have also been cited as cause for the split. It has also been claimed that Manson was not aware of Von Teese's filing for divorce and moving out of their home at the time that the story was published, conceivably due to his reported stay in Paris, France. Von Teese reportedly took their two cats and two dachshunds, Greta and Eva, with her when she left. Manson fought for custody of the two cats, but only received one of them.
Evan Rachel Wood attended the grand opening of Manson's new Celebritarian Corporation Gallery of Fine Art and among the most notable artworks were two portraits of Evan. She will also co-star in his upcoming horror film Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll.
In music
Jessicka of the band Jack Off Jill was an early friend of Manson's, her band opened most of his South Florida shows. He not only produced most of the band's early recordings but also played guitar on the song "My Cat" and helped name the band. Manson later wrote the liner notes for the band's album Humid Teenage Mediocrity, a collection of early Jack Off Jill recordings.
In early 1993, after being instructed by his new label, Interscope Records, not to play any local shows, Manson formed Mrs. Scabtree. Mrs. Scabtree was a side project between he and newly hired Jeordie White. Manson played drums, while White (dressed as a black woman) shared vocal duties with then girlfriend Jessicka from Jack Off Jill who wore a blonde wig. Mrs. Scabtree only played two shows in South Florida.
Manson has helped or provided full scores for several major motion pictures, although several of his pieces have been cut, and his name dropped from the credits. Some of his more notable soundtrack score contributions include The Matrix, From Hell and Resident Evil.
Manson appeared as a guest on rapper DMX's album Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood for the track "The Omen", produced by Swizz Beats, and has performed (with the rest of the band) on stage with Eminem as background music in the song "The Way I Am".
Manson sang vocals on "Break You Down" off of the Washington, DC-based industrial rock band gODHEAD's 2000 Years of Human Error album. This album is distinguished for being the only one released on Manson's vanity label Posthuman Records.
In film and television
Manson made a cameo appearance as a doctor in the Murderdolls' music video "Dead in Hollywood", and also appears in the Nine Inch Nails music video "Starfuckers, Inc.", as well as "Gave Up", and Eminem's "The Way I Am" music video.
His first appearance in a film was in the role of a pornographic actor in David Lynch's Lost Highway, in 1997. He also had a minor role in former love interest Rose McGowan's 1998 film Jawbreaker and a supporting role in 2003's Party Monster, which is based on the events leading up to and the murder of Angel Melendez by the infamous Michael Alig of club kid fame, where Manson portrayed a psychotic drag queen named Christina . Manson made a cameo appearance in The Hire: Beat the Devil, a short film in the BMW films series (starring Clive Owen as the Driver), which featured James Brown as himself, and Gary Oldman as Satan. His most talked-about film cameo was in the Michael Moore political documentary Bowling for Columbine discussing the motivations of the perpetrators and allegations that his music was somehow a factor. He played himself, in animated form, on an episode of the television series Clone High, in which he sang a song about nutrition and the food pyramid. He is featured prominently throughout Not Another Teen Movie, and covered the song "Tainted Love" for its soundtrack.
His music is frequently featured on the show C.S.I.. The character on the show, Greg Sanders, is a big fan of Manson and the actor who plays him, Eric Szmanda, is a personal friend of Manson's.
Manson was featured in the 2004 film The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, and was set to appear in Abelcain, directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Living Neon Dreams in 2005, although both of these projects are still unreleased as of 2007. He will also be seen as a bartender in an upcoming vampire movie starring Lucy Liu called Rise and possibly has pending roles in Abelcain, RISE and other projects.
Manson has produced 23 music videos, most of which have gone beyond the scope of a normal performance video and been well received by critics for their imagery and direction. Mansons three most recent released videos Personal Jesus, (s)AINT and Heart-Shaped Glasses were voluntarily funded with his own money (to a sum of $1,500,000) and largely not that of the record company. Manson stated in June 2006 that he saw himself "as more a student of film than of music".
In July 2005, Manson told Rolling Stone that he was shifting his focus from music to filmmaking - "I just don't think the world is worth putting music into right now. I no longer want to make art that other people--particularly record companies--are turning into a product. I just want to make art."
By 2006 Manson was working on his directorial debut, Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll, but has since put the project off until November 2007 to focus on recording Marilyn Manson's sixth studio album, Eat Me, Drink Me, followed by a world tour. The film is said to feature special effects using a magician rather than computer-generated imagery.
In graphic art
From the beginning Manson has been a recreational painter, the oldest of his surviving pieces dating back to 1995-1996, but it was after his 1998 Grey period that Manson began his career as a watercolour painter. In 1999 he made five-minute concept pieces and sold them to drug dealers with their knowledge that they would accumulate in value over time. Gradually Manson became more drawn to watercolors as an art form in itself, and instead of trading them, kept them and continued to paint at a proficient rate.
This manic creativity resulted in an exhibit for his art, The Golden Age of Grotesque, held at the Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions Centre on between September 13 and 14, 2002. The reaction to his paintings was largely positive with one critic comparing them to Egon Schele's pieces and describing them as heartfelt and sincerely painted, and Art in America went as far as to liken them to the works of a " psychiatric patient given materials to use as therapy ". Others however saw less merit in the works stating that the value was in the celebrity.
Two years later almost to the day, during September 14 and 15, 2004, Manson held his second exhibit on the first night in Paris and the second in Berlin, Trismegistus, which was also the title of the center piece of the exhibit a large three headed Christ painted onto an antique wood panel. Again the reception to the works could be described as mixed but was largely in favour of the artist.
Manson opened his own an art gallery, The Celebritarian Corporation Gallery of Fine Art, on October 31, 2006 in Los Angeles for which his third exhibition (by invitation or appointment only after the opening night) was the inaugural show. From April 2 until April 17, 2007 Manson's recent works were be on show at the Space 39 Modern & Contemporary in Florida.
A coffee table art book is in the works, initially titled The Death of Art. The last given title was Quintif. It will be published by the makers of Flaunt magazine.
40 pieces from this show were ported to the Gallery Brigitte Schenk in Cologne, Germany to be publicly exhibited from June 28 until July 28, 2007. After this they will return to the Space39 Modern & Contemporary Gallery thus leaving Manson's own gallery in Los Angeles temporarily without his own work until 2008.
The price of Manson's works has been a somewhat controversial point for fans and critics alike, with most fans realistically unable to afford the paintings save for fine art editions and lithographs. Manson's prices though are realistic and reasonable considering the long-term value at a time when prices for contemporary art have never been higher.
During his European tour 2007 Manson has exhibited his paintings in Germany, Russia and Switzerland.
In other areas
Manson provided the voice of the alien Edgar in the 2005 first-person shooter video game Area 51, which also featured David Duchovny. Marilyn Manson also appears (as himself) as a playable character in the video game Celebrity Deathmatch. Allegedly, the artist posed nude for photos prior to his rise to fame. The pictures appeared in the March 1999 issue of Honcho.
Professional fallouts
Trent Reznor
One of Manson's high-profile relationships, the defunct friendship with Trent Reznor, has been marked with mutual bitterness and perhaps vendetta. This started in the mid-90s, when Manson was due to make a track that would appear on the soundtrack to David Lynch's Lost Highway, but instead Reznor was the one who wrote a song, "The Perfect Drug", for the film. In 1999, it seemed the two artists had patched their differences, as Manson made an appearance in the video for the Nine Inch Nails song "Starfuckers, Inc."
In 2004, Reznor was asked whether he had plans to do any covers; he sarcastically replied, "I was really hoping to do something unique and pertinent - like do an exact copy of "Personal Jesus" - but it was already taken."
In a 2005 interview, Manson said Reznor's Nothing Records had lost the master recordings of Manson's first three albums. He implied it was Reznor's intention, "Now that Nothing Records doesn't exist, I think there's only one of two people responsible for that. Out of those two people, there's only one that really has an opinion of me that is voiced very often."
Twiggy Ramirez
In May 2002 Twiggy Ramirez left the band, citing differences in perspective on the future of the band. He went on to play bass for A Perfect Circle and Nine Inch Nails. During this time, Manson claimed in interviews that he and Ramirez were still close friends, while Ramirez maintained that he rarely spoke to Manson. In an interview in February of 2006 Twiggy stated he was willing to record an album with Marilyn Manson if the right conditions were met. In Autumn 2006, Manson and Ramirez were photographed together at numerous parties in Los Angeles, in amicable poses.
In January 2008 it was announced that Ramirez had reunited with the band as live bassist for the last leg of the Rape of the World tour as well as co-writer of the band's seventh studio album. In an interview with The Heirophant on January 11, 2008, Manson revealed that the reconciliation with Ramirez was not as abrupt as it initially seemed, and that the two had been occasionally communicating with each other since speaking at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, California prior to the Winter European leg of the Rape of the World tour.
John 5
John 5's reasons for leaving Marilyn Manson were cited as being mutual, despite the mysterious nature of his sudden firing by Manson's manager in 2004.
John was quoted at the time as saying about the incident, "I don't know. . . I was nothing but nice to him," he continued. "I never screwed up onstage well not really badly and I did everything I could to get along with him. Maybe, just maybe, it had something to do with the fact that I don't drink or do drugs, and he's not like that at all. Maybe he held that against me. I don't know. He never said." John 5 was notorious among fans as being drug and alcohol free.
Before the incident, Manson had assaulted John on stage, notably, Manson kicked John in the face during a televised performance, leading to a brief confrontation in front of a packed and roaring audience (available on YouTube). This was during the intro to "The Beautiful People", when played at the Rock AM Ring 2003.
Also, during the tour John maintains that Manson spoke about matters other than business only once, "It was on my birthday, and he turned to me and said, "Happy birthday, faggot" then walked away."
Despite this, John maintains he respects Manson, citing his skilled production style and his love for the band's music. John was already a fan of the band before joining in 1998. In response to a question regarding the reason for the split with Manson, John 5 was quoted by Vintage Guitar Magazine as saying, "(laughs) At the end of the last tour, I decided I really wanted to do this solo thing and that I had to devote all my time to it. The split with Manson was totally amicable. It wasn't one of those big breakups. We're friends. I wish there was some good dirt, but there's not (laughs)!"
In an interview prior to the January 19, 2008 performance in Orlando, Florida, Marilyn Manson revealed that John 5 would make a guest appearance during the show, stating: "I'll have [John] come on stage and play songs with us this first show. It would practically be the Holy Wood lineup." This guest appearance ultimately did not take place, however.
Madonna Wayne Gacy
Before leaving the band nothing was heard of Madonna Wayne Gacy for over a year. In an exclusive conference conducted by Marilyn Manson in April 2007, he revealed the upcoming album Eat Me, Drink Me was recorded in collaboration between himself and Tim Skold. Essentially this meant Gacy did not partake in the album, but not ruling out the possibility of him performing as live keyboardist on the upcoming tour. Later, Manson revealed that Chris Vrenna (who previously drummed for the band during Ginger Fish's hiatus in 2004) would be performing as live keyboardist on the tour, in Gacy's place.
On August 2, 2007, Gacy filed a lawsuit against Marilyn Manson seeking a back pay of $20 million dollars. Gacy claimed Manson has been using the band's money for personal interests, among which are his collection of Nazi paraphernalia, his drug addictions, his wedding with Dita Von Teese and the production of Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll.
On December 20, 2007, Manson countersued Gacy. As a reaction to the lawsuit Gacy filed against Manson in August, Manson claims, "keyboardist Stephen Bier did not carry out obligations to take part in master recordings [of Eat Me, Drink Me], concerts [of the Rape of the World tour] and the selling of band merchandise," according to this report which states that Manson is seeking unspecified general and special damages.
Insight
Even though he is known mostly for his music, which some refer to as crude and grotesque, Manson is a very intelligent and insightful man. In interviews he is always well spoken and is calm to the people who challenge him. Most people see his music as delivering the wrong message, but Manson states that his message was to be creative.
Causes
In 2002, Manson worked with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to make the wish of a boy with a life-threatening disease come true. 16-year-old Andrew Baines from Tennessee had a wish to sing back-up vocals for a "big" band; Manson jumped on the task and took Baines under his wing to make his dream come true. Manson invited Baines to the studio on August 27, 2002, where he let Baines perform backing vocals for the then-upcoming album, The Golden Age of Grotesque. "Yesterday, I spent the afternoon with Andrew, who reminded me the things I create are only made complete by those who enjoy them. I just want to simply say, 'thank you' to Andrew for sharing such an important wish with me," Manson said, according MarilynManson.com.
In 2005, Manson donated a signed collector's edition mask to Music for Relief to help victims of the 2004's Boxing Day Tsunami; this auction raised $155.
In January 2006, Manson contributed a hand-painted guitar from the Six-String Masterpieces - The Dimebag Darrell Art Tribute to the Little Kids Rock auction. For every $100 raised by the product, Little Kids Rock would provide one low-income child with an instrument and lessons Manson's guitar raised $6,250.
In 2006, Manson became a benefactor of Project Nightlight, an LA area foundation that uses short films, music, and apparel to grab teenagers attention and inspire them to speak out against sexual and physical abuse. Manson afforded Project Nightlight a stand at the opening of his art gallery, and in April 2007 gave the charity a print of his painting Eve of Destruction and a framed collector's edition mask.
Legal history
Marilyn Manson was first arrested in Florida on December 27, 1994 after a concert at Jacksonville's Club 5 for "violating the adult entertainment code." Manson was detained for 16 hours before been released without charge. Bizarrely police believed Manson had performed oral sex on stage with a man (when in fact it was Jack Off Jill vocalist Jessicka wearing a fake penis) and thrown either his or the man's penis into the crowd. On February 5, 2001 in Marino, Italy Manson suffered what is to date his only other post-concert arrest when he was accused of blasphemy having worn the outfit of a cardinal on stage during the song "Valentine's Day". Soon after the detention it was ascertained that Manson had not committed a crime and it appeared the legal troubles were over until the next day when Manson was arrested in Bologne on charges of public indecency relating to a 1999 show where it was alleged Manson had exposed his penis. Manson was released and the charges dropped, notably the arrests came a week after two teenagers brutally murdered an Italian nun which some less reputable sections of the Italian press blamed on Manson's music.
Sexual misconduct
In a civil battery suit, David Diaz, a security officer from a concert in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 27, 2000, sued for $75,000 in a Minneapolis federal court. After two days deliberation the jury decided that Manson's alleged molestation had been part of the show and that he had not overstepped his boundaries as an artist, ruling in favor of Manson and against Diaz.
Manson was charged with "sexual misconduct" on August 16, 2001 after Joshua Keasler filed a complaint that as he was providing security for a July 30 concert Manson had allegedly spat on his head, wrapped his legs around him and began to gyrate his penis along his neck.
Oakland County prosecutor David Gorcyca said that "It was offensive, crude and rude. This was not something that was orchestrated or choreographed as part of the act. The security guard was an unknowing and unwilling participant and, ironically, while he was there for protection... was sexually assaulted." The charge, punishable with up to two years imprisonment, was accompanied with a charge of disorderly conduct. The complaint came with an arrest warrant but Manson thwarted this by posting a $25,000 personal bond. In a one-day December 28, 2001 trial the presiding Judge dismissed the charge of "sexual misconduct" as Manson had in his view "gained no sexual gratification from the act." Manson pleaded "no contest" to the outstanding lesser charge, which carried only up to three months imprisonment, and was ordered to pay $4,000 in fines. After the trial Keasler pursued a civil lawsuit against Manson that was dropped when the two settled out of court in February 2004.
Lawsuits
In 1997, former Marilyn Manson guitarist Scott Mitchell Putesky filed a lawsuit against Manson seeking unpaid royalties for his contributions to the band's output up to that period, including the band's recently released second studio album Antichrist Superstar. The case was concluded in 1998, although the outcome was confidential.
On January 4, 1999, SPIN editor Craig Marks filed an assault and battery lawsuit against Manson in the New York Supreme Court. Marks alleged that Manson, upset at not making the cover of SPIN, the lawsuit specifically alleged Manson had yelled "I can kill you, I can kill your family, I can kill everyone you know!" before two of Manson's bodyguards were said to have charged him and held him against the wall and threw him to the floor after which it was alleged Manson had said, "That's what you get when you disrespect me." The case was dropped when, weeks later, Marks was fired from SPIN over financial irregularities.
On April 2, 2002, Maria St. John filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court accusing Manson of providing her adult daughter, Jennifer Syme, with cocaine and allowing her to drive while under the influence. The case was settled out of court.
On August 2, 2007, former Marilyn Manson keyboardist Stephen Bier filed a breech of contract lawsuit against Marilyn Manson seeking $20,000,000 in damages. Bier claimed Manson has used the band's money for personal interests, among which are his collection of Nazi paraphernalia, addictions to cocaine and Valium, his $300,000 wedding with and $150,000 engagement ring given to Dita Von Teese and the production of Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll as well as Lewis Carroll memorabilia, human skeletons and taxidermy. Manson's lawyers responded in January 2008 with a 101-page rebuttal of the claims, the case will be tried by jury in November 2008 in the Los Angeles Superior Court.

Trivia
All Manson's tattoos were done at Tattoos By Lou in Miami, Florida over a four-year span starting in 1991, until a new tattoo emerged in early-2007.
In the 1990s, an Internet rumor spread stating Josh Saviano (who played Paul Pfeiffer in 1980s drama The Wonder Years) grew up to become Marilyn Manson. As of 2007, Josh Saviano is a licensed attorney in New York. He has, however, commented on the rumor, and thinks it is neat people believe him to be in a "goth band".
Contrary to what some may deem "common knowledge", Manson has not had any ribs removed for the purpose of autofellatio. "If I really got my ribs removed," he said in the The Long Hard Road out of Hell autobiography, "I would have been busy sucking my own dick on The Wonder Years instead of chasing Winnie Cooper."
In an E! interview, Manson revealed that he owns a Nintendo DS. "My friend got me this little Japanese lawyer game; it's fucking amazing," he said in reference to Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. He also mentioned that he was "pretty good at Mario Kart".
In an interview with MTV in 2002 Manson revealed that for most of his paintings he uses a children's Alice in Wonderland tin. He also uses a 1920's mortician paint kit originally used for retouching cadavers.
Manson has Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, an erratic, rapid heartbeat.
Manson, who cites David Bowie as being his biggest influence, claims his favorite songs by him are "Quicksand", "Ashes to Ashes", and "We Are the Dead". He even proposed to his ex-wife, Dita Von Teese, during a David Bowie concert (at the time Bowie was performing "Be My Wife") .
Pets Manson has had in his life include the childhood dog, an Alaskan malamute named Aleusha, an orange tabby named O.J. which he found on the steps of Christian school, four Devon Rex cats named Aleister, Edgar, Herman, and Lily, and two dachshunds named Greta and Eva. After the divorce of Manson and ex-wife Dita Von Teese, Von Teese won the custody of both dachshunds and Aleister. For Manson's 39th birthday on January 5th, 2008, girlfriend Evan Rachel Wood gave him a new cat, Charlie (Manson), as a birthday gift.
When asked in 2007 by Rolling Stone what his current favorite playlist was, Manson chose among Radiohead's "Exit Music (For a Film)", Amy Winehouse's "Rehab" and David Bowie's classic "We Are the Dead".

This photo is the daughter of confinement. By the date it was done, of course not, because I took it two months before the fatal Covid 19 turned our lives upside down. They say that when the devil gets bored he kills flies with his tail and, although I have not been spared from working because I belong to one of the so-called "essential services", I have huge amounts of free time to waste on the most unusual entertainment. The genesis of this photo was very haphazard and at the time I expanded well to taste telling you all the details. However, it was missing something (rather it was left over) to be totally satisfied with the result. So in the same way that other times I erase graffiti on this occasion I have eliminated some unpleasant shadows that invaded the track, some annoying branches that covered part of the front of the Bitrac and a horrendous electrical cabinet that some soulless person had thrown near the track. And to top it off, I have cropped the photo to give more prominence to the freight and the friendly train crew who, as you can see, greeted the photographer very warmly. Now it is up to you to decide if what I have perpetrated is an unacceptable aberration or a mere transitory delirium fruit of this ominous confinement that seems to have no end.
Port Arthur was one of Australia's Convict Prisons and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the extensive area featuring the crumbling buildings of that era in our history. The main buildings were abandoned after a fire swept through in the late 1800's.
However, the area is also notable due to a more recent event. Whilst some countries suffer from gun violence and multiple shootings by lone crazies, we have largely been exempt except for here (and a couple in Melbourne).
The Broad Arrow Cafe at Port Arthur was the site of the massacre of 35 people and injuring of 23 others including children in 1996.
This Memorial Cross and Garden mark the site.
A movie "Nitram" has recently been made about the incident and perpetrator.
The Prime Minister, John Howard, moved quickly to reduce the burden of Guns in the community, backed by most of the community and politicians. This has been very effective.

Obligatory piety (กตัญญู 'Ktạnỵỵū) toward parents has always been the foremost pillar for society in Thailand, and failure to follow this age-old tradition by not taking care of one's aging-parents is the quickest and most certain means to perpetrate social-suicide; much the same way a thievish drug-addict would quickly become a social-outcast in most other cultures. As cultures evolve, aging-parents in Thailand are increasingly being left to fend for themselves, and thievish drug-addicts are progressively being viewed as 'victims'... of what, I am still unsure... their own bad-choices maybe?

The shell game (also known as thimblerig, three shells and a pea, the old army game) is portrayed as a gambling game, but in reality, when a wager for money is made, it is almost always a confidence trick used to perpetrate fraud. In confidence trick slang, this swindle is referred to as a short-con because it is quick and easy to pull off. The shell game is related to the cups and balls conjuring trick, which is performed purely for entertainment purposes without any purported gambling element.

this one Man-Grifter/Criminal-UnIndicted-

My first and most loved OC ever. I have had him in my heart for more than ten years.
In his story he had raped a woman.
This woman became pregnant by him, but had the child aborted.
She somehow managed to steal the fetus.
She decided to take revenge.
She knew the perpetrator.
She knew where he lived.
She visited him one evening.
When he opened the door for her, she stabbed him down.
She slit open his stomach.
She tore him up in sheer anger.
And stuffed the fetus between his bowels.
Hardly alive, he heard her say: "You will be a good father."
The bullfight, as it is practiced today, involves professional toreros (of which the most senior is called a matador) who execute various formal moves which can be interpreted and innovated according to the bullfighter's style or school. It has been alleged that toreros seek to elicit inspiration and art from their work and an emotional connection with the crowd transmitted through the bull. Such maneuvers are performed at close range, after the bull has first been weakened and tired by lances and short spears with barbs which are thrust into and then hang from the bull. The close proximity places the bullfighter at some risk of being gored or trampled by the weakened bull. After the bull has been hooked multiple times behind the shoulder by other matadors in the arena, the bullfight usually concludes with the killing of the bull by a single sword thrust, which is called the estocada. In Portugal, the finale consists of a tradition called the pega, where men (forcados) try to grab and hold the bull by its horns when it runs at them.
Supporters of bullfighting argue that it is a culturally important tradition and a fully developed art form on par with painting, dancing and music, whereas critics hold that it is a blood sport perpetrated as a cowardly act resulting in the suffering of bulls and horses.
Emiliano Zapata (1879–1919)
Emiliano Zapata was born on August 8, 1879, in Anenecuilco, Morelos, Mexico, into a poor peasant family. From a young age, he experienced the hardships of rural life and witnessed the injustices perpetrated by landlords and Mexican governments against the peasants.
Zapata became the leader of a revolutionary movement advocating for land and justice for the peasants, opposing local elites and governments that favored the wealthy. His political philosophy was summed up in the slogan "Tierra y Libertad" (Land and Liberty).
During the Mexican Revolution (1910–1920), Zapata led the forces of the Plan de Ayala, fighting for the return of expropriated lands to the peasants and defending the rights of the poorest. He became a symbol of resistance against oppression, corruption, and social injustice.
Zapata was betrayed and assassinated on April 10, 1919, in Cuautla, in an ambush orchestrated by the Mexican government forces. His death did not stop his legacy: he remains a universal symbol of the fight for justice, peasant rights, and the freedom of oppressed peoples.
Zapata's figure has inspired generations of activists, revolutionaries, and movements for land and social justice around the world. His image has become an icon of revolutionary Mexico and popular resistance.
This series of portraits is dedicated to men and women who were killed for defending truth, justice, and humanity. Each imagine is a symbolic act of remembrance — a visual protest against indifference and the corruption of power. “REMEMBER THEY DIED FOR YOU SO THAT HATRED AND INJUSTICE WOULD NOT HAVE THE LAST WORD,” I pay tribute to those who gave their lives so that others could live in dignity and freedom. These images are not just portraits — they are acts of resistance, memory, and love for the human spirit.

▪️ "Asked by an audience member what she [Harris] would do to end the slaughter of Palestinians by US-sponsored bombs, Harris delivered her usual canned answer about how “far too many” Palestinians have died and the need for a two-state solution, after which host Anderson Cooper asked a follow-up question.
▪️ "What do you say to voters who are thinking about supporting a third-party candidate, or staying on the couch, not voting at all because of this issue?” Cooper asked.
▪️ What followed was an absolutely jaw-dropping answer from the vice president. In essence she says that people who have strong feelings about the genocide in Gaza need to get over it and vote for her anyway if they want abortions and affordable groceries, because she supports the genocide and that’s not going to change." -

HRF Files War Crimes Complaint in the Czech Republic Against Israeli Soldier Involved in War Crimes in Gaza (Publ. 22 Sept. 2025)
Prague 22 September 2025
The Hind Rajab Foundation has filed a criminal complaint before the Prague Municipal Public Prosecutor’s Office against Israeli soldier Roei Haimatan, a member of the Givati Brigade, for his alleged involvement in genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, committed in the Gaza Strip.
The complaint, submitted through our Czech Legal Counsel Mr. Jan Täubel, is based on the principle of universal jurisdiction, which enables Czech courts to investigate and prosecute the most serious crimes regardless of where they were committed or the nationality of the suspected perpetrator. The Hind Rajab Foundation has confirmed that Haimatan is currently present in the Czech Republic.
Documented Involvement in Atrocities
According to evidence submitted with the complaint, including a detailed investigative report by the Hind Rajab Foundation, Roei Haimatan served in the “Mivtzait” company of the 435th Infantry Battalion “Rotem” of the Givati Brigade. This unit was among the first to enter Gaza following October 7, 2023.
Social media posts published by Haimatan himself provide evidence of his direct participation in forced displacement of Palestinian civilians. Additional material indicates his potential role in unlawful confinement, torture, and ill-treatment of civilians, as well as the destruction of civilian property.
Further evidence comes from members of his unit, including Mori Keisar, against whom HRF filed a complaint in January 2025.
Several soldiers have documented their deployment in Khan Younis during January and February 2024, revealing their involvement in additional crimes by Haimatan’s company:
- The destruction of civilian homes, including filmed demolitions
- The forced displacement of residents of Khan Younis
- Indiscriminate gunfire at civilians across different parts of Gaza
- The humiliation of Palestinian detainees, captured in photographs and videos
The Foundation stresses that his actions cannot be seen as isolated misconduct, but as part of a wider, systematic pattern of atrocities carried out by the Israeli military in Gaza.
Call for Immediate Action
The complaint urges Czech authorities to take urgent steps to secure accountability, including:
- Seizing Haimatan’s electronic devices (mobile phones, laptops, storage media) to preserve potential evidence.
- Imposing travel restrictions or detention to prevent flight or the destruction of evidence.
- Initiating a full investigation into his role in international crimes committed in Gaza.
Statements
Dyab Abou Jahjah (b. 1971), Chairman of the Hind Rajab Foundation:
'This case is about more than one soldier. Roei Haimatan’s actions reflect a broader system of impunity behind Israel’s assault on Gaza. By pursuing accountability wherever perpetrators are found, we affirm that those who commit genocide and war crimes will face justice.'
Natacha Bracq, Head of Litigation of the Hind Rajab Foundation:
'Czech law obliges prosecutors to act when suspects of genocide or war crimes are present on its territory. The evidence against Haimatan, much of it from his own social media, is credible and serious. The authorities must now open an investigation and secure the evidence without delay.'
Jan Taubel, Legal Counsel:
'War crimes should be prosecuted and punished regardless of the citizenship, religion or political affiliation of the perpetrators. I am very glad that TAUBEL LEGAL could at least in this way help justice to punish the atrocities committed by the occupation forces in Palestine. I firmly believe that the relevant Czech authorities will proceed impartially and regardless of any intervention attempts.'
A Broader Strategy Against Impunity
The complaint against Roei Haimatan is part of the Hind Rajab Foundation’s broader strategy to pursue legal accountability for Israeli officials and soldiers implicated in the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The Foundation is working at both the international level, through submissions to the International Criminal Court, and the national level, by triggering proceedings in jurisdictions across Europe and beyond.
By filing these cases, the Foundation seeks to ensure that individual perpetrators of atrocities face consequences and to close the space of impunity that has enabled repeated violations against Palestinians.

This mural of President Obama was painted in January of 2013 just days after being defaced. Two or three previous murals, one dating back to 2008, had also been defaced and replaced at this location.Houston police have identified the perpetrator and charged him with felony mischief. Unfortunately, the vandal is not in custody and has vanished from the Houston streets like a thief at night. I think the mural can still be seen at the corner of Travis and W. What's a great way to take down a threat without deadly force? Ion cannons!! Throw a couple big ones on a SPII starfighter along with a turret that shoots regular death and you've got yourself a Perpetrator Neutralizer! Oh, and also a bomb is thrown on the detachable cockpit to make things fun. There is a drone that can be launched at any time to assist but its guns, like the turret, fire deadly blasts. Landing is achieved by wings that double as skis so watch out Ice Planet, there's no where to hide.
I had a lot of fun with this. The LEGOS are f i n a l l y sorted and I was amazed at being able to find pieces so easily! I first built the drone and loved it so much that I had to build a minifig scale version. This was a very interesting experience and it was nice to have a little guide friend to help me out. I definitely want to do mini to big again in the future!
A short while after taking this photo I witnessed something I had never seen before and hope never to witness again. There were 2 male Redstarts trying to claim this territory. There was a lot of chasing going on and all of a sudden one flew into the glass of the hide 2 of us were sitting in. The chaser just missed the glass. The one that hit the glass went to ground a little stunned and the chaser jumped straight on him and started trying to finish him by pecking violently at him. It was incredibly vicious pecking of the head and back and went on for some time. Slowly the victum stopped moving and the perpetrator flew off. The 2 of us watching from the hide were powerless to do anything becasue we couldn't reach the victim. There was no movement for several minutes although we could tell it was breathing. To our amazement it then tried to get to its feet but couldn't but it was moving its head to look around. After about a half hour it did manage to get to its feet and to our amazement eventually flew away. I really hope it survived its ordeal.
I'm not a huge fan of HDR, so don't ask me why I perpetrated that. See you on monday for the Barcelona serie :)
