Cited as one of the greatest female MCs of all time, Ms. Lauryn Hill’s prolific rhymes and powerful voice catapulted her into the public eye as a member of the Fugees, whose 1996 album, The Score, was certified six times platinum and took home two GRAMMY Awards for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and Best Rap Album. In 1998, Ms. Hill established herself as a creative force as a solo artist with her now classic debut,The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
The iconic work earned Ms. Hill a record-setting ten GRAMMY Award nominations, five of which she took home, including Best New Artist and Album of the Year. The album was also nominated in several categories at the NAACP Image Awards, including Outstanding Female Artist, Outstanding Album, and Outstanding Song, where she was nominated for both “Doo Wop (That Thing)” and “A Rose Is Still A Rose.” The album has appeared on countless “Best Of” lists, including Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time,” SPIN’s “Top 100 Albums of the Last 20 Years,” Vibe’s “150 Albums That Define the Vibe Era,” and the Associated Press’ “10 Best Albums of the 1990s.” The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill has sold 8 million copies worldwide. In 2002, she released MTV Unplugged No 2.0, a live album of her 2001 performance on MTV Unplugged, which was certified platinum four weeks after its release.

Built in 1900, this was the first building at Virginia Tech to be constructed using Hokie Stone. Originally built as a YMCA building, it has also served as a military building and student personnel building before becoming known as the Performing Arts Building in the 70s. I took a management class here my senior year.

The expansion of residential suburbs in the 1960’s and 1970’s left our central city with stately but underutilized school facilities. Fremont School is one example - a beautiful brick and terracotta building in the Spanish Revival style on a quiet Midtown street. It had a ‘second life’ as an adult education center, which was has since been shuttered.
After much discussion and negotiation, Fremont School now is slated as the new creative home for Sacramento’s Performing Arts community. The high ceilings and large classrooms have the potential to perfectly suit rehearsal and teaching needs for the Sacramento Ballet, Sacramento Opera and Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra.
There are many technical challenges to adapting an early 20th century non-reinforced masonry building to the needs of 21st century performing arts. We are diving into these challenges with creative energy, confident that this new Studios for the Performing Arts will be a vibrant and creative magnet in the community.

We were delighted to perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. John Passion on Palm Sunday, 25 March 2018, with the Choir of Durham Cathedral in the stunning surroundings of Durham Cathedral and under the direction of Daniel Cook, Master of the Choristers and Organist at Durham Cathedral. Daniel has recently taken up the position in Durham having been Sub-Organist and Assistant Director of Music at Westminster Abbey. www.durhamcathedral.co.uk
The soloists were Philippe Durrant (Evangelist) and Peter Coulson (Christus). The Avison Ensemble was directed by Pavlo Beznosiuk.
Bach’s St. John Passion was the first setting of the passion story that he composed after assuming the prestigious position of cantor at the Thomas Church in Leipzig, Germany, being first performed on the afternoon of Good Friday, 7th April 1724. Of the two surviving Passions by Bach, the St. Matthew Passion is the more impressive, but the St. John Passion is the more dramatic. It is not as comforting and consoling as the St. Matthew Passion and is the more stark and painful evocation of the Passion story.
The St. John Passion is a compelling Biblical narration of the Crucifixion story, with a penetrating reflection of the meaning of the events as described by John. Listeners find themselves alternating between active participation in the events and meaningful contemplation. The conclusion of the St John Passion is very different from that of the Matthew; it is affirming, confident and assuredly looking forward to the life beyond, whereas Matthew leaves us simply with entombment.
The Avison Ensemble is the outstanding period instrument orchestra based in Newcastle upon Tyne, which plays and popularises the music of Charles Avison (1709-1770) and other English classical composers of the Baroque period, such as Garth, Arne and Herschel. The Ensemble also performs Purcell, Handel, Vivaldi, Corelli, Geminiani, Pergolesi, Teleman, Rameau, Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.
