Celebration of Human Spirit – Realizing the Infinite Potential within

Celebrating Iconic Institutions, Movements and Gurus

I loved the very thought of putting SPANDAN together that venerates the human spirit, the excellence of which every art form, including dance and its outstanding proponents pursue at all costs. In this edition of Spandan, I am paying my humble tributes to the legendary institutions of the nation, the movement SPICMACAY that has inspired a few million youth and also the Gurus who have contributed to the rich tangible and intangible heritage of our great nation. Special Nartanam issues on Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan, Dr. Padma Subrahmaniam and Sri Avinash Pasricha, Book by Madhavi Puranam is being released.

I have put together 16 compilations here as a tribute to each of the following Iconic institutions for their contribution to rich cultural heritage of the Nation and to SPICMACAY, its founder Dr Kiran Seth and voluntaries who have been working tirelessly to initiate every child to understanding the nuances of the art forms and unravel the mysticism within.

Shea's Performing Arts Center, at 646 Main Street, is a theater for touring musicals and special events. Designed by Ramp and Rapp, it originally opened in 1926 as Shea's Buffalo, screening silent movies. Its innate interior was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. The theatre was operated as a Loew's Buffalo Theater from 1948 to 1975 before it was restored in the late 1970s.

Title : Finlandia Hall

Other title : Finlandia talo; Finlandia-talo; Finlandia huset; Finlandia Concert and Congress Hall

Creator : Aalto, Alvar, 1898-1976

Creator role : Architect

Date : 1967-1971 (Finlandia Hall built) 1973-1975 (Congress Hall added)

Current location : Helsinki, Uusimaa, Finland

Description of work : Between 1959-1981 architect Alvar Aalto created and revised plans for a new Helsinki city center. Finlandia Hall, near Toolo Bay, and Sahkotalo were the only buildings constructed from these plans (Source: Schildt, Goran. Alvar Aalto The Complete Catalogue of Architecture, Design and Art. London: Academy Editions, 1994. p. 34-35). "Clad in white marble, the sculptural building dominates the Hesperianpuisto park and its surroundings. The main entrance is from the park, with a lower, 'drive-in' storey facing the sea...The main building is linked to the south with a congress wing completed in 1975, which forms a functional whole with the older part of the building. The congress wing is directly linked with the Finlandia Hall- its foyers and halls. Externally, however, the parts of the building are distinguishable, particularly on account of the concave facade of the extension" (Source: Norri, Marja-Ritta, Elina Standertskjold and Wilfried Wang, eds. 20th-Century Architecture Finland. Munich: Prestel, 2000, p. 260). The Carrara marble (renovated since original construction) on the facades proved incompatible with the climate of Helsinki. This resulted in a series of bowed slabs that give the intended flat surfaces a pattern of billowed rectangles.

Description of view : View of vehicle and person in paved area in front of angular white facade with high concave windows.

The Dijon Performing Arts Center is a state-of-the-art 1640-seat symphony hall and opera house. The Performing Arts Center opened in 1998 and was the second structure to be completed as part of the master plan for the new urban district, also designed by Arquitectonica. This modern composition consisting of a convention center, conference center, performing arts center, office buildings and hotel is crisscrossed by pedestrian walkways that lead to boldly-shaped exterior courtyards carved out of the solid mega-block. The new opera facility bridges over the boulevard, acting as a gateway from the modern city to the historic district.

The Auditorium is an entryway for the public, located 12.6 meters above street level. The facades are covered with Chassagne flamed stone. An elliptical well of light vertically traverses the building-bridge. A monumental metallic sculpture closes the curve along the length of the stage. The general volume of the building embraces the curved motif that encircles the neighborhood. Access is through a reception hall along the Boulevard de Champagne.

The Auditorium of Dijon is the result of the collective work of the architectural firms Arquitectonica (Miami) and Bougeault–Walgenwitz (Dijon), assisted by Richard Martinet (Paris).

We just returned from camping at a bluegrass festival in the Hudson Valley of New York.

Beautiful scenery, some beautiful weather, and some rain Friday night that made Sat. morning extremely muddy.

We came home early because of some drunk noisy men who camped behind us -- every other word out of their mouths had four letters - even when they weren't drinking ... really, I'm not kidding They were up till 5 am singing drunken sailor songs and threatening the neighboring tent campers with bodily harm if they were asked to quiet down. Sorry....probably more that you wanted to hear.... It was exhausting. I AM SO HAPPY TO BE HOME sweet home!!!!!

I did get to an excellent fiddle workshop given by Megan Lynch. fiddlestar.com

She was great-- I really enjoyed her style-- maybe this one will help me do the fiddle thing!!??

Hester Collyer – Juliette Harrison

Philip Welch – Mark Higgins

Ann Welch – Alex Parker

Mrs Elton – Janet Sweet

Sir William Collyer – Keith Hartley

Mr Miller – Roy Moore

Freddie Page – Sam Moore

Jackie Jackson – Hereward Cruttwell Reade

Hester Collyer (Juliette Harrison) leads a privileged life in 1950’s London as the beautiful wife of high court judge Sir William Collyer (Keith Hartley). To the shock of those around her, she walks out on her marriage to move in with young

ex-RAF pilot, Freddie Page (Sam Moore), with whom she has fallen passionately in love.

Set in post-war Britain, Terence Rattigan’s classic play, The Deep Blue Sea is a study of forbidden love, suppressed desire, and the fear of loneliness – but is at heart a deeply moving love story. Stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea, what – or whom – should Hester choose?
