Performing at WOMAD Charlton Park 26th July 2013

The Malawi Mouse Boys take their name from the fact that they previously earned their living selling grilled mouse kebabs at the roadside in Malawi. They recorded their first album as an eight piece but appeared at WOMAD as a four piece consisting of :

Zondiwe Kachingwe - lead vocals

Alfred Gavana - vocals and guitar

Nelson Muligo - vocals and guitar

Gerard Haju (a guess!) - vocals and percussion

They performed two full sets at WOMAD - the first just after midnight on Friday/Saturday and again in the early afternoon on Saturday.

Their American producer, Ian Brennan introduced the band saying that the performances at WOMAD were their first appearances on a stage. If that is true, they are naturally talented performers.

The lead singer, Zondiwe Kachingwe danced around the stage as if he had been doing this for many years and several times jumped down in to the pit at the front of the stage to sing with the audience. It was a brilliant show.

The expansion of residential suburbs in the 1960’s and 1970’s left our central city with stately but underutilized school facilities. Fremont School is one example - a beautiful brick and terracotta building in the Spanish Revival style on a quiet Midtown street. It had a ‘second life’ as an adult education center, which was has since been shuttered.

After much discussion and negotiation, Fremont School now is slated as the new creative home for Sacramento’s Performing Arts community. The high ceilings and large classrooms have the potential to perfectly suit rehearsal and teaching needs for the Sacramento Ballet, Sacramento Opera and Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra.

There are many technical challenges to adapting an early 20th century non-reinforced masonry building to the needs of 21st century performing arts. We are diving into these challenges with creative energy, confident that this new Studios for the Performing Arts will be a vibrant and creative magnet in the community.

The Fiddlers ReStrung performing at the Dearborn Heights Montessori Center on Friday January 16th. The Fiddlers ReStrung played two performances for the school. Interestingly, the Saline Area Schools were off that day for an inservice day. But because of bitter cold weather, almost 350 schools in the metro Detroit area were closed. So this school was one of only a handful that were open that day - so depending on how you look at it - we were lucky!
