Last of this series as 47790 gets rapidly under way with me chasing it out of the station and on platform 1, two passengers who have got off the now departing DMU have paused to look at the unusual sight, unusual in itself is anybody other than 'enthusiasts' taking any notice whatsoever of whats' going on around them. With the departure of the maroon and cream 'Northern Belle' with its turquoise coach, 'Caroline' towards Barnsley and the Northern Rail DMU heading off now across Penistone viaduct on the 2B48, Sheffield to Huddersfield service, the station once more return to quiet, country calm, nothing else being due for another half an hour. Signal BY1053 has turned to red after passage of the DMU across the viaduct and it would be nice to walk over to the platform at the back of the station on the left and watch a few heavy loaded coal trains come up the bank from Wath Yard, hauled by a class 76, EM loco or two more like on their way to the power stations (Fiddlers Ferry) on the east side of the Pennines. Now I have to content myself with a pleasant chat and walk with Oscar deploying his 'class BMX' traction unit along the track-bed which these trains used and towards the skate-board park a mile along the Trans-pennine trail, the ex-Woodhead line....
NS local train is paused heading westbound in Champaign waiting for the red light to change to green to proceed over the CN diamond in the distance in this view. It's returning with several empty covered hoppers it retrieved from the Dart (Solo Cup) plant in Urbana.
NS uses a combination of former Peoria & Eastern (Big Four, Conrail) and Wabash trackage to reach the Dart factory in Urbana to the east. NS also services the Emulsicoat plant in Urbana on the former P&E.
