I have taken a stylised bark pattern from my ledger and am looking at ways to stitch it. So I am going to be exploring different stitches to fill the shapes. I have laid some silk organza on top of turquoise dupion and traced the pattern directly from my artwork six times so that I can make several samples. I know Karen will cringe that I have used the disappearing marker but I didn't want to use pencil and marking with thread would be way too fiddly to remove. I haven't had a problem removing the marks so far and because the backing is blue any residue (hopefully none) will disappear into the piece.
So when I have finished all six samples my intention is to cut them out and insert them into cutouts in my ledger and then decide which one I will use for my scissor pouch. I will also have a reference for future filling stitch options on other projects.
The colours here reflect and exaggerate the colours of lichen found on bark. I have filled the spaces with running stitch, outlined in whipped running stitch and then couched the lime green accent. I have used a combination of cotton a broder and Danish flower threads. I have slashed the organza between the blocky shapes so that the turquoise dupion shows through.

I slightly altered the pleats in the back, but it turned out to fit just perfectly.
You can recognize their origin by looking at the pattern. If you concentrate on it a while, it gets more and more interesting.

Found this old pattern when sorting my sewing stuff. It is dated 1944 so it was probably one of Mom's early patterns or Grandma's.
The Palolo region that backs against the distant hills, with dramatic cloud patterns. Clouds usually shroud the upper regions of the hills, making it cold up there.
