Un petit extrait de l'album "On a clear day", enregistré en public. (Nicola Sabato à la contrebasse, Dano Haider à la guitare et Patrick Cabon au piano) : Teaneck

In his Confessions St Patrick wrote, "I was sixteen and knew not the true God, but in a strange land the Lord opened my unbelieving eyes, and I was converted." Patrick became convinced that the kidnapping and homesickness were actually opportunities to know Christ better. "Anything that happens to me," he wrote, "whether pleasant or distasteful, I ought to accept with [serenity] giving thanks to God … who never disappoints." Knowing that this serenity didn't come from his own strength, Patrick wrote, "Now I understand that it was the fervent Spirit praying within me."

In 432 Patrick used his own money to purchase a boat and sail back to Ireland, where he had been enslaved. Patrick spent the rest of his life preaching the Gospel in Ireland, bringing many people to faith in Christ. He also passionately defended the human rights of slaves, and he died on this day in 461.

This painting of St Patrick evangelising the king of Ireland is in the Basilica of Our Lady of Victory in Lackawanna near Buffalo, NY.

Stepping outside into the blowing snow at the conclusion of the History of the English Language class I am taking, he was standing by the entrance of the building on Toronto’s Yonge Street. My eyes were still adjusting to the outdoors and my camera was still in the bag with my class notes. His strong but relaxed presence, however, was impossible to miss. He was with a friend and they appeared to be waiting for someone else to join them. Unprepared though I was for encountering a stranger and taking photos, I introduced myself while reaching for my camera and he politely looked to his friend for permission before saying “Sure. I’ll help out.” Meet Patrick.

It was a bit of a scramble while we shook hands and I fired up my camera while reaching for my contact card and scouting the street for a location. I saw a restaurant window just down the street a few doorways from where we met and felt the red would fit will with this very tall man’s red vest. We walked over and his friend busied himself in a doorway checking email on his cell phone while I held my camera up high to use the “live view” screen for framing and taking the photos. It was the only way I could get a decent perspective due to Patrick being so tall. The other issues I faced in taking the photos were his tendency to blink and the unpredictability of the falling snowflakes. He apologized for the blinks but I said they (and the snowflakes) were my problems to solve.

I thought to use the sequential shooting feature of my camera and was glad that I’d gone to the trouble and expense of having that button on my camera repaired after it broke on a recent trip. I proceeded to fire off a string of exposures so I could later delete the blinks and the photos with large snowflakes in awkward locations.

Photos taken, I managed to find out a bit about Patrick but I could tell that time was at a premium. Patrick, who is 34, came to Canada with his parents from his native Rwanda in Africa. “Our country went through very bad times and my parents wanted to protect us from that.” I learned that Patrick is a self-employed businessman. It was cold and I could tell that Patrick and his friend had already given me a few minutes they really didn’t have so I thanked them as we exchanged contact information. He later wrote me and kindly shared a bit more about himself. He said the greatest challenge he faced in life was experiencing genocide at an early age and losing many relatives. His message to the world is that “our hunger [be] satisfied by one plate and not so many. Take your share of the world and leave the rest for others.” He commented that this project was “interesting and very human” in that it bridges the distance between strangers. He ended his email with a favorite quote: “"When reading, don't let a single word escape your attention; one word may be worth a thousand pieces of gold..."”

It was very nice meeting you, Patrick and thanks again for being part of my Human Family photography project. I regret that anyone must suffer losses like those you have experienced.

This is my 179th submission to The Human Family Group on Flickr.

Though the day is over I think I'll bring my green dress to the Keystone Conference in two days. I'm so excited to see so many of my friends this coming week that I can barely sleep !

MUSICIAN / POET PATRICK STICKLES OF THE BAND TITUS ANDRONICUS

A STILL FROM THE FORTHCOMING FILM "A PRODUCTIVE COUGH"

A DOCUMENT OF PROCESS AND CREATION.

"The last time you heard new songs from New Jersey rock/punk outfit Titus Andronicus, it was a cleverly disguised self-titled album (The Most Lamentable Tragedy, you see, is also the subtitle of Shakespeare’s play after which the band is named) which spanned two discs and crested over a 90-minute runtime. That gigantic fourth LP featured home-recorded seven-minute philosophical ruminations, Daniel Johnston and Pogues covers, and a handful of the best punk bangers recorded this side of 1980. We’re here today to introduce the idea of the fifth +@ LP, A Productive Cough, which features none of that last element, which some might argue is the band’s most valuable calling card. Titus Andronicus has pulled off a “Reverse Bob Dylan,” and the band’s fervent fans are no doubt going to be, at the very least, quite surprised by the results found within. As with almost all artistic decisions about the direction of Titus Andronicus, this move was concocted by frontman Patrick Stickles, and Patrick Stickles is an artist full of contradictions."

Patrick Kelly Runway of Love April 27 – November 30 2014 Philadelphia Museum of Art.

.

Born and raised in Mississippi, Patrick Kelly moved to Paris in late 1979. His early signature creations—skinny, body-conscious dresses with colorful buttons—were feature in Elle magazine 1985 and in 1988, Kelly became the first American and the first black designer to be voted into the prestigious Chambre syndicale du Prêt-à-Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode, the French fashion industry association and standards organization. Kelly’s aesthetic developed out of his African American and Southern roots, his knowledge of fashion and art history, and from the club and gay cultural scenes in New York and Paris. His work pushed racial and cultural boundaries with golliwog logos, Aunt Jemima bandana dresses, and black baby doll brooches. Kelly’s playful looks were inspired by his muse, Josephine Baker, and admiration for couturiers Coco Chanel, Madame Grès, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Yves Saint Laurent. Kelly’s brilliant vision and career were cut short by AIDS, to which he succumbed in 1990. Runway of Love showcases over eighty ensembles that have been presented to the Museum as a promised gift by Kelly’s business and life partner, Bjorn Guil Amelan, and Bill T. Jones.

The exhibition is supported in part by the Arlin and Neysa Adams Endowment. Additional funding is provided by Barbara B. and Theodore R Aronson, Arthur M. Kaplan and R. Duane Perry, Nordstrom , and by members of Les Amis de Patrick Kelly, a group of generous supporters chaired by Bjorn Guil Amelan and Bill T. Jones.
