The cornerstone of St. Patrick’s Cathedral was laid in 1858 and her doors swept open in 1879. It was over 150 years ago when Archbishop John Hughes announced his inspired ambition to build the “new” St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The Cathedral is still under renovation when I visited and you can see the scaffolding everwhere

When Patrick Joseph Driscoll, 70, reached the summit on a challenging hiking trail, he described it as a spiritual experience. On September 11, he and his long-time friend, William Cashman, were traveling to hike in Yosemite National Park. The Manalapan, New Jersey resident was the son of Irish immigrants, grew up in Manhattan and served four years aboard a U.S. Navy destroyer during the Korean War. He earned an engineering degree from New York University and a Master's degree in computer science from Rutgers University. Joe, as most people called him, retired as the Executive Director of Software Development for Bell Communications. He and his wife were married for forty-two years and had four children.

1951 -- The first customers get trays full of food on the opening day of the new BX at Patrick AFB, Fla. Deactivated as a Navy installation in 1947, the location was transferred to the Air Force in 1948 and turned into Patrick AFB. The Patrick cafeteria was not unlike the hundreds of cafeterias AAFES operated in the days before name-brand restaurants became part of the family, starting in the mid-1980s.
