I've been working on some gum paste cherry blossoms for a cake that I'm donating to my son's school next week! I WAS going to do the snowflake theme again, BUT... I'm sure most people are getting pretty tired of seeing snow ... real or gumpaste! I think a cheerful, spring-like design will be appreciated! So.... I'm planning a 2 tier cake that I will decorate with some cherry blossoms. While I've got all of my tools out for the cherry blossoms, I decided to TRY my luck at a flower that I really love... every single time I look at Jacqueline's (PetalSweetCakes) photo stream I want to try to make the gumpaste peonies like she makes!! So, I tried it!
It's not exactly what I had hoped for, so I thought I would post a photo and find out if any of my 'gumpaste flower cake friends" have any suggestions! I've been working on the petals for this for about 2 weeks... so I've just about got to the point that I'm getting frustrated with it!
I have not dusted it or colored it, I will do that when I need to use the flower, then I can make it any color I want!
I always feel like I'm ALL THUMBS when I assemble all of the petals!
And suggestions?? *~*

Political wheat paste posters made using large rubber stamps were everywhere in Oaxaca up until a few days before the annual Guelaguetza festival at the end of July. They were scraped off by the city and the walls repainted. However toward the end of July, the began appearing again. Oaxaca, Mexico 0718 JEF_DSC0570-a
gum paste tree with green buds to resemble pussy willows. I know they are not green. But it is what the bride wanted! :)

Epoxy paste filling all the visible void space to cover the injection port bases and feathered out at the edges. It'll take 12-24 hours for this to cure before I can do the injectable epoxy.
Coated the paste with sugar lemon syrup and the design stayed in tact as Caitlin ran 15 miles with henna on her hand.
Awesome ultimate henna test.
Paste was left on for over 4 hours....time to watch the magic happen!
Oh yum. I'm so happy to have another batch of homemade tomato paste for winter cooking. I use it in soups and stews, but it's also the most rich, delicious pizza base sauce, hence the name (so, so, so much better than commercial brands). There is never enough to last the year, but it takes 20 lbs of toms to process down into this small batch and at this point, that's the max amount of toms I'm willing to sacrifice for paste. Salsa and pasta sauce take priority. (I really wanted to do ketchup too this year, but didn't have enough toms).
This is a spin from an Aarti Sequeira recipe. I can never remember the propotions, so I needed an easily searchable picture! We make the paste and freeze them in ice cube trays, then remove and store in a ziploc bag. The proportions are 1 cup garlic, 1 cup ginger (peeled and cut into pieces similar to the garlic), 1/2 cup canola oil. A quick spin in the mini chopper to a course paste and this will make 1 tray (14 cubes), 2 TB (1 oz) each. We use these in lots of dishes, 1 cube is usually just the right size. Microwave 1 cube for 15 sec on high and its ready to use.
