Palimpsest Magazine/02
Palimpsest is currently accepting proposals for its second issue. Submission proposals should be 200 words or less.
The theme of issue /02 is MEDICINE.
Guidelines
Please do not send submissions without first contacting us with your proposal.
For fine art submissions:
* Submissions can be of any nature – film, video, audio, print, textile, craft, etc. We ask that the artist/creator manufacture 50 of whatever item they choose to submit. Please include a cost estimate for materials minus labor.
* Submissions should be able to fit comfortably within an 8×10x2 inch box.
* (Flat, foldable, assemble-able, or taking up a minimal percentage of the internal real estate)
* Please include a short artist bio with your submission proposal
* Video or audio submissions should be sent in MP4 or AVI format. Audio which has no tangible housing (cassette, record, mini CD or USB key) should be sent in MP3 format.
For written submissions:
* Submissions which have no tangible housing (chapbook, zine, other printed matter) should not exceed 1500 words.
* Printed matter must be able to fit flat or folded inside of an 8×10x2.5 inch box (flat, foldable, assemble-able, or taking up a minimal percentage of the internal real estate).

Seeing paintings reproduced in a catalogue of Holmead Phillips paintings palimpsestically combine to create the tertium quid.

Exploring the word palimpsest, meaning working upon previous work. Using typography and layering, inspired by both Fiona Banner and Robert Rauschenberg, I created layers using a variety of different materials to give a different saturation to each layer of work and to explore which materials allow the drawings underneath to be seen.

Temporal Palimpsests explores personal memory and collective understandings of time as layered. It questions how palimpsest as metaphor and methodology communicates temporal relationships.
The term palimpsest describes the visible traces that remain after a manuscript has been recycled by erasing and writing over the original text. It is derived from the Latin word, palimpsestus, meaning “parchment cleaned for reuse.” In the seventeenth century, palimpsests spurred intrigue at the possibility of uncovering hidden texts. Metaphorically ,the palimpsest presents a lens through which to understand time as a layering of experiences and voices that shape the story of a culture, landscape or individual. As a methodology in art, the palimpsest allows for a visual rendering of these layered encounters.
The exhibit showcases the work of artists from the Department of Visual Arts at Western University who address themes such as memory, the passage of time, the impacts of time, and the cataloging of time. Through repurposing material and in multi-media installation, these artists reimagine the palimpsest.
