Rome and the Abruzzo Region are similar in many ways. Rome’s well-known effectiveness in preservation and restoration of its architecture and culture could be the example that Abruzzo needs to look to in its efforts to rebuild. Rome has the resources and capabilities to be of service to the people of L’Aquila who have been forced from their homes after the 2009 earthquake.

This post is one piece to a string of images and coments to bring awareness to the recent earthquake in the Abruzzo region of Italy. Towns such as L’Aquila and Castelvecchio Calvisio are left damaged and crumbled from this unfortunate event. Rome is an example of restoration and preservation not only of architecture and art, but of culture. In this way, Rome can be an example and even help to the Abruzzo region because of its familiarity with these issues.

I lived in this town for 25 years and this was the first time I ever saw this sign. And I can't make out either of the layers, but the building was formerly a Western Auto. Downtown Toppenish WA

Seeing paintings reproduced in a catalogue of Holmead Phillips paintings palimpsestically combine to create the tertium quid.

In the foreground is the cemetary for Trinity Cathedral. In the background is the American Stock Exchange. Together, they illustrate the idea that place and lanscape is a kind of layered historical palimpsest.

The latest Outspoken Authors release from PM Press.

The main almost 100 page novella, Gypsy, is excellent although I was holding out hope until the very end! It's the story on an interstellar expedition and is very firmly based in feasible or existing technologies, set as the whole world is starting to become uninhabitable... I was reminded of Robinson's recent Aurora and it's crew's problems while I was reading this story.

Also two neat little short stories and an essay, with the usual interview with Terry Bisson and a bibliography.

I don't think I've read any of his work since Palimpsests, the Ace Special book he co-wrote with Glen Harcourt back in 1984.

Should really track down some more of his work.

Or maybe re-read Palimpsests!
