Gannets are monogamous and mate for life. Pairs form, and renew their bonds, at the breeding colony from late January. After breeding gannets leave the gannetry, around September/ October time, and head out to sea to winter in the Bay of Biscay, or further south to the coasts of west Africa, with some individuals crossing the Equator. The pair will go their separate ways, but reunite at the gannetry, with the male arriving first to reclaim and defend their nest site, until the female also returns.
