Images of Downtown Austin #1

I'm starting another series today, this time of downtown Austin. Back in April, I did a long series on SOCO. All of these images were taken a Flickrwalk I did with a bunch of friends back in late April. There is a small open park area on West 6th Street and I noticed the curve of these steps.

Lots of bicycles, an artsy wall painting ad and a well stocked florist next door made for a pleasing view - also the ubiquitous security camera overhead recording it all.

Brooklyn au printemps - beaucoup de bicyclettes, une grande peinture muraille, et un marchand de fleurs bien appovisionne conttribuent a cette vue plaisante. Bien sur aussi la camera de security omipresente qui enregistre tout.

Actually, maybe I am...but, it's probably the issue listed below :)

In case you've noticed some inconsistencies or slowness on a couple of the Contacts-related pages on Flickr, there is an actual bug that the Flickr development team has been working on. For some of you, this could explain things like less views and less comments.

Some of the symptoms are:

* Latest photos not showing right away on your Contacts page

* Some of your posts not appearing in "Comments You've Made" in a timely manner

Personally, I've noticed the latest photo postings from some of you are not appearing in my Contacts page until several days later. In other words, I'm not completely ignoring you...I may not have realized that you had uploaded new photos.

Further info on the status of the bug can be found by clicking here (if you're interested):

With less than 24 hours behind Flickr's announcement yesterday of adding video to their service, the early sentiment from existing Flickr users appears to be largely negative.

A new group started on Flickr called NO VIDEO ON FLICKR!!! has already seen over 3,000 Flickr members join the group. The group already has a petition going with over 900 users signing a petition opposing video on Flickr. The petition language is below.

"We the undersigned members of Flickr, free and pro, agree that video has no place on Flickr. Other sites on the web accept video already, but do not accept photos. We all joined Flickr because of it's dedication to photography and photographers, and we want Flickr to remain true to this dedication. It is our request that this feature and addition to Flickr be removed."

If you agree with this statement, type /signed followed by your username/full name in a reply to this thread."

While there are some advocates for video and some Flickr defenders in the official feedback forum on Flickr Video, here too the comments by many of Flickr's most active users are largely negative.

Some typical comments from the Flickr Help Forum:

Richard Carter: "It's frankly disgraceful that you have not allowed users the option of saying (by default) "I don't want to see videos". Especially in search results.

I know you've invested too much in this awful feature to turn it off, but PLEASE MAKE IT GO AWAY!! "

fofurasfelinas: "I just HATE having videos on flickr.

Flickr is a place for PHOTOS.

We pay for a photo service, if I want to see videos, I go to youtube.

I think Flickr is getting heavier everyday, and videos are going to make the connection busier."

flickr.com/help/forum/en-us/70129/page9/#reply427461 "Wow...check out all of the sentiment against this!!!! I too am opposed to video on Flickr....at least the Flickr that we currently know and usually love. While I acknowledge that many people use Flickr as a depository for their snapshots, many of us are here to improve our art. We are photographers! I also acknowledge that videography is an art....but give them their own space and don't muddy our waters!"

dadodedos: "Sorry, but i'm angry for this last news.......

I think this is a really bad move for Flickr, why video ??? there's a lot of sites that you can put video.......Please !! This is a photo site !!!

Put your video on youtube or others......

NO VIDEO ON FLICKR

NO VIDEO ON FLICKR

NO VIDEO ON FLICKR

NO VIDEO ON FLICKR

NO VIDEO ON FLICKR

NO VIDEO ON FLICKR

NO VIDEO ON FLICKR "

Fighting the criticism in the official help forum mostly seems to be being done by long-term Flickr member Striatic and Flickr Community Manager Heather Champ.

It will be interesting to see if the anti-video sentiment on Flickr continues to grow and gain momentum and if Flickr will actually take action on its community's largely negative reaction to the service thus far.

About a year ago Flickr made a decision to cap Flickr contacts at 3,000 for users. After a lot of protesting from Flickr users over this decision Flickr reversed their decision and allowed unlimited reciprocal contacts.

Personally I don't see Flickr reversing their decision on adding video to the site. Video is a fast growing service on the web and certainly Yahoo wants a piece of this pie. With the huge user base that Flickr represents, the opportunity to promote video to this group from a dollars/cents standpoint probably means more to Yahoo! than how a small but vocal group of hardcore Flickr photographers feel about the service.

What's more, prior to their Yahoo takeover announcement, Microsoft had indicated that they would be launching a photo/video combo site to compete with Flickr. If/when Microsoft takes over Flickr, I would assume that they would rather the site contain both video and photos rather than a photo only site.

Perhaps the simplest answer in the short-term for Flickr would be to offer filtering technology to filter video out of your Flickr experience. They already have filtering technology that allows users to opt out of seeing screenshot images, for instance, on Flickr. They also have filtering technology allowing people to opt out of adult content on Flickr. By creating an option to allow users to opt out of video on Flickr this would alleviate some of the concern from some of the early critics of this service.

On the other hand, if too many people opted out of the video experience on Flickr, it might lose momentum and not achieve the success that promoting it to the entire Flickrverse might have.

Rain? It often rains in the northern parts of France. That's rather usual. Less common nowadays are these period CBM (Car et Bus Le Mans) city buses (in 1987 already provided with a kneeling system!). Also disappeared: transport company TCC and it's red/white livery on both trams ans buses. Since 1994: Transpole. And what to think of the company called 'Boum' (boom)? A year later that was gone too, without causing any noice, I suppose...

Photovoltaic - very important - usually linked to household solar hot water. The vital water system cools the concentrated solar cells.

Wind - here and there, along with geothermal, tidal, wave, salt-lake heat trap, etc.

Locally, we will use much more electric power per capita because of inefficient public transport, rapid increases in electric heating (very inefficient, but clean), snow making.

Aspen can afford to overspend for energy. We may burn the last gallon of gasoline ever used - $250.00! In an antique 1980 jeep.

"WANT" FUTURE SCENARIO, or What I Want That They Didn't Do For Me.

These are up to you, but I will add my pet energy solution. This is only my wish list because:

1. Nationally it would require a leap in thinking to start now, before we overinvest in dreary solutions like alcohol (hic!) or proceed from crisis to crisis (most likely).

2. Locally Aspen will be too conservative and rich to need or try new risks. Perhaps Glenwood Springs or Carbondale will go for it.

It is:

The HYDROGEN AGE

And the LOCAL PLANT

Hydrogen, stored as a metal hydride, is safer than gasoline and works great in cars. It can be generated from coal, steam, nukes, and for the independent - directly from solar photovoltaic cells (T.I.). It is pollution-free (burns to water), so the CO2 crisis is crested. We will cook with it.

Fuel cells make electricity from it, and we can make it from electricity, so you could consider it a battery. If super-batteries come, the all-electric car wins. We will have both.

THE LOCAL PLANT

Aspen purchases a tokomak (fusion) from Russia, or an LMFBR from France in 2018 because we still build 'em one at a time over a 15-year period. Russia started mass-producing off-the-shelf reactors in 1975.

We pipe heating steam all over our towns in the winter. Country mice add a touch of solar electric.

We make our own hydrogen for transportation and peak shaving via fuel cells.

We produce the necessary tenfold increase in electric supply.

We charge up our short-range commuter cars for fifteen cents a day.

No big transmission towers.

If we can't stomach the risks of atomic mysteries, we do the same with local coal where we know how bad it is (visit Denver).

Last week we took our family to Temple Square in SLC to look at the Christmas lights. My daughter and her husband were visiting from Wyoming and this was one place they wanted to see. This photo was taken by my oldest son using my Nikon d300. This HDR is 5 shots. The place was wall to wall people, but due to the long exposures of each photo there are very few ghost images of people on the sidewalks.

Rocky Point, located in Warwick, Rhode Island was the most exciting place when I was growing up. It would send us kids into spasms of joy! My own children grew up with a visit to Rocky Point each summer. That is all gone now...

This arch was a rather significant entry/exit of the park.
