Terry's were a well-known York chocolate company - now subsumed by Kraft. In their long heyday they made fine chocolate in York (and even had a Terry's Cafe in the city) - and here are two dummy packets for the famous "Devon Milk Chocolate" and "Devon Nut & Fruit Milk chocolate". It was Terry's that made the famous "Chocolate Orange" still so popular.

A whimsical package illustration was desired for a new Granola Snack product to create exceptional brand awareness. It needed to look fresh, unique, vibrant and organic in texture and style, and to feel friendly in nature. The background countryside needed to evoke the Oregon Willamette Valley countryside.
An interesting comparison to show the development of the packets of Lux soap flakes between 1905 and 1949 - simplification, the increasing use of bold graphics and the continued general layout and colours used.

Creative design agency Flipflop Design produced this brand identity for Food retail packaging. This is actually being published in the Design and Design Book of the Year Volume Three.
A 1957 illustrated price list from the long established biscuit manufacturers Macfarlane Lang who had works in Glasgow, the Victoria Biscuit factory, and London, the Imperial Biscuit factory at Osterley in Middlesex. The company's origins dated back to Lang's bakery in 1817, the merger with Macfarlane being cemented in 1841. The first expansion to London had been to Fulham but in 1930/31 they constructed the Osterley plant on a greenfield site. In 1948 the company merged with McVitie & Price to form United Biscuits.
This price list shows the range of decorative tins alongside the standard range of shortbreads, sweet and chocolate biscuits a few of which were available in tins but the majority in Fiberfoil or Fiberseal packets. Along titled 'price list' no prices are shown in this catalogue; prices would have been shown on a separate loose sheet that could be easily amended if required. The Price List was printed at the well known printers Pillans & Wilson of Edinburgh & Glasgow.

A fine collection of old leaf teas seen recently in a basement store and showing some marvellous contemporary packaging design. This packet of the Co-Operative's famous "99" brand of tea possibly dates to the mid-late 1970s. It notes that the usual price of 9½p is discounted to 7½p. It also includes details of an offer for Christy's Bath Towels.
One of the case studies in "House Style", the themed issue of the CoID's magazine Design in November 1956 looks at the corporate identity and style of Mac Fisheries. The company's stores, then part of the Unilever empire having been set up by Lord Leverhulme in 1919 and acquired by Lever Brothers in 1922, were a common sight on British High Streets and sold fish, poultry and similar groceries.
Mac Fisheries had long had a 'style' dating back to the chain's formation in 1919 when Kruger Gray had designed their house mark, blue had been adopted as a house colour and shop fascias used a Roman lettering style. The publicity and advertising also had a 'common theme' throughout, some by the Doriam Studio. In 1952 the company employed Hans Schleger to refresh the image as seen here. The work, commissioned by S. Sutherland Smith, the retail development manager, involved all aspects of visual material from shops, transport, signs and packaging.

This is a boring shot unless you are a dork like me...
When I used to own/run my design company we had a bookcase in the entryway that displayed some of our packaging design work. Most of those samples are now in a tub in my basement. I know. Tragic, right? I decided to attempt to photograph some of them so I have a permanent record of my work...
The reflections at the top of the bottle really bug me, but not enough to pay a "real" photographer to reshoot this.
