Sorry for so many pictures... there are so many figures you can find in these knees.... very unique feature of these trees!

Knees are woody projections sent above the normal water level, roughly vertically from the roots, with a near-right-angle bend taking them vertically upward through water. One early assumption of their function was that they provided oxygen to the roots that grow in the low dissolved oxygen (DO) waters typical of a swamp, acting as pneumatophores: mangroves have similar adaptations. There is little actual evidence for this assertion; in fact, swamp-dwelling specimens whose knees are removed continue to thrive, and laboratory tests demonstrate that the knees are not effective at depleting oxygen in a sealed chamber. Even though there is no expert consensus on their role, the supposition that they are pneumatophores is repeated without comment in several introductory botany textbooks.

I've been going to Bayard for years and only once did a find a loose knee.... and I took it!!!

We are so lucky that OXYGEN is a byproduct of photosynthesis, and that my property is surrounded by so many trees! Thank you trees!

{Through a process called photosynthesis, leaves pull in carbon dioxide and water and use the energy of the sun to convert this into chemical compounds such as sugars that feed the tree. But as a by-product of that chemical reaction "OXYGEN" is produced and released by the tree. (www.usda.gov)}

Winterkill, a term for fish dying under the ice due to a lack of oxygen, is a well-known phenomenon which happens when plants and algae in the water stop producing oxygen due to the lack of sunlight.

This is the Eastern Vail Nebula, made up by NGC6995 (left) and NGC6992 (right). Along with the Western Vail Nebula and Pickering's Triangle, they form the Cygnus loop in the Cygnus constellation. The Eastern Vail Nebula was once a star about 20 times the size of our Sun that went supernova 10-20 thousand years ago. The filament like structure of ionized gas and dust span approximately 130 light years and is 2400 light years away from Earth. This is a bicolor image using Ha and OIII filters due to the strong emission of ionized Oxygen (Blue/Teal) and Hydrogen (Red) molecules. The total exposure was 7 hours split from data taken in April from Bortle 2 skies in Texas and September from my backyard. This is one of my favorite images to date! More to come!🔭

Trees gives everybody oxygen and streetlights put their light one everyone. Was the world just like that.

A sad but slightly surreal sight to come across lots of dead sharks at Holkham last week, there were 20 or so along the beach. Presumably they had been caught by the quickly receding tide and shallow water. It looked rather like they were swimming through the sand.

I've been thinking about starting a blog, but I'm a blog virgin and I don't know what to post. Any ideas?

A coast live oak appears to cup the Sun within it's long branches like a bowl of hot soup.

It's basically having lunch. The oak tree takes in carbon dioxide and water molecules and makes food with the Sun. The energy from sunlight causes a chemical reaction to break down the molecules of carbon dioxide and water and reorganizes them to make the sugar (glucose) and oxygen gas. The oxygen is released from the same tiny holes through which the carbon dioxide entered.

I'm fortunate to share this image with you all via Explore Thanks to the flickr community for your feedback and the continued encouragement! Cheers!!!
