Helen Booth - Synapse

After exhibiting in the gallery in 2007 Oriel Mwldan welcomes back Helen Booth. Booth is a drawer, painter and installation maker who’s practice embraces the versatility of the line.

In 2012 she was awarded the prestigious Pollock Krasner Award for her work on paper. This exhibition features recent work and predominantly explores ideas of materiality through the layering. The artist builds up impulsive, expressive marks which are then stripped back to build space and texture into the works. This expe--rimental overworking of a surface introduces hidden areas to her creations which Booth sees as key to her practice.

Oriel Mwldan is open 10am to 8pm from Tuesday to Saturday, 12pm - 8pm Sundays, and from 5pm until 8pm on Mondays* during school term time (*from 10am to 8pm on Mondays during school holidays).

Just looked up from my screen at 5:45am to see that all of my toy companions had fallen over. Yep, it's been a looong day at work. A long week...

...is hardy to USDA zones 8 to 11, so it grows very well in my part of the world. It is commonly called Fern Leaf Lavender for the lacy fern floliage which is very appealing with its greenish grey color. The flowers are very aromatic and so are the leaves when crushed with an aroma of rosemary and mint. Native to the mediterreanean region it likes full sun and prefers to be on the dry side.

The infusion of the flowers is used to "calm overworked nerves and relieve stress". Gardening the lavender plants have the same effects as the infusion and it is a lot more fun to do.

While the crust *looks* good, it was seriously overworked. Only 2nd or 3rd attempt at making crust from scratch. But the filling tasted FANTASTIC!

#thathautecouturefeeling

Presented by Dolci & Kabana in collaboration with AFTRS

Opening: 20 March, 6pm – 9pm including poetry reading.

Exhibition dates: 19 March – 6 April

Dolci & Kabana present their second major project, #thathautecouturefeeling in collaboration with fashion/design practice AFTRS. For most of us, haute couture – the highest of high fashion – remains a myth-like concept, so removed from reality that it becomes a vague feeling of desire, an out-of-reach constructed image of fashion. Coupled with this is our reality of luxury fashion houses experienced through their diffusion lines: the less expensive branded t-shirt or treasured packaging. This familiar (fashion) tension of longing for the one whilst living with the many, the high and the low, the ‘haute’ and the diffused is the subject of this exhibition.

#thathautecouturefeeling collects a palette of what Dolci & Kabana call ‘haute couture feelings’: relatable, palpable ways we experience fashion-like, heightened states of emotion in everyday life. The exhibition is framed around a poem: a ‘Merchandise Poem’, unraveling this palette of ‘high’ and low feelings, love and loss, luxury, tragedy and humour as a branding gesture. The Merchandise Poem also encapsulates the limitations and artifice of projecting the ‘ideal woman’ or muse of a brand, instead celebrating a woman of awkward glamour, repressed earnest desire, clumsiness and subtlety. The sentiments of the Merchandise Poem are further explored in music or ‘Merchandise Karaoke’ – a simulated form of karaoke that unpacks the emotional resonance of music through lyrics, YouTube videos, and Google image searches.

Finally, ‘haute couture feeling’ is explored through ‘haute merchandise’ – an oxymoronic form developed by AFTRS, which fuses high technical proficiency with diffused, simplified, haphazard and playful techniques. Using the Merchandise Poem as a design brief, AFTRS investigates dress standards that imply such extreme states or feelings, expressing these ideas as a sequence of collided codes of palpable luxury: sleep/evening wear, generic materials, promotional garments, packaging as content and the dissolution of conspicuous branding signatures through hackneyed printing techniques. In an extreme act of ‘diffusion’, AFTRS disperses the Dolci & Kabana brand, overworking it to dissolve the iconography of style.

#thathautecouturefeeling forms part of the Cultural Program of the L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival.

Dolci & Kabana (Ricarda Bigolin & Nella Themelios) is a collective operating amorphously between the fields of art, design, and fashion.

AFTRS (Ricarda Bigolin) is a drifting/parasite fashion/design practice. Concerned with the after-thoughts of fashion production and consumption, embracing the aspiration and resignation within the inevitable fallacies and fantasies of fashion.

1.) was versteht man eigentlich unter Verhaltensampel?

Far beyond pleasure, sex plays an important role in maintaining our health.

There are several situations that can cause people to stop having sex. Overwork, lack of disposition, traumas, relationship endings and even personal decisions are just some of them. Regardless of the reasons, when you stop having sex you will notice that certain things can change with regard to our health and attitudes.

Did you know, for example, that a bad mood can be related to sexual abstinence? And it doesn't stop there: changes such as the appearance of pimples, dry skin and hair loss can also occur. Everybody reacts in a way, my friend.

The fact is that, far beyond pleasure, sex plays an important role in maintaining our health and well-being.

If not, you don't believe it, just look at what has already been proven about the "side effects" that arise when you don't have pleasurable sex for a long time:

#1 – LESS SOFT SKIN. Sex increases blood circulation and oxygenation in the body, making a person look much healthier. This is directly reflected in the appearance of the skin. That is, if you spend a long time (months, for example) without having sex, your skin starts to feel dry and less soft.

#2 – INCREASE SEXUAL FANTASIES. Without sex, the body is anxious to have sex and the mind, to try to fulfill this need, ends up working hard on fantasies involving sex.

#3 – ACNE EVERYWHERE. Believe

Indigenous People's Day - October 12, 2020

Mission San Rafael Arcángel

San Rafael, California

On Indigenous People's Day, local native Coast Miwoks and allies rallied in front of the statue of Junípero Serra at Saint Raphael’s Catholic Church in Marin County, CA, calling for the removal of the statue and acknowledgment of Serra's brutal legacy. After numerous impassioned speeches, the statue was covered with red paint and ropes were used to pull the statue down. Similar actions had been taken across the state and country in recent months in a push to end the practice of glorifying brutal colonizers and proponents of slavery.

Serra was a Spanish Franciscan priest who is credited with establishing and overseeing the California Mission system that brutally enslaved the thriving native populations that had inhabited the land for thousands of years. The Spanish missions not only stole indigenous lands but sought to erase native languages and cultures. During this period (l769-1834), 37,000 California natives died at missions as a result of disease, starvation, overwork or mistreatment. Despite this history, statues honoring Junípero Serra have been erected all over California, and over considerable protest, Pope Francis conferred sainthood on Serra on September 23, 2015.

Following the toppling of this statue, 5 people were charged with felony vandalism at the request of the church (which also unsuccessfully sought a charge of 'hate crime'). 4 women identify as indigenous and 2 as baptized in the Catholic church.

Thanks to all of you my good friends for sharing your valuable impressions on the previous 'unfinished' version! And so... here is the 'finished piece'. I've retained the loose and 'sketchy' underdrawing since everyone seemed to agree that it imparted the motion and action appropriate to a musician. As my usual approach, I refrained from intensifying and detailing the face and expression until this final stage. I generally hold off on fully developing any portion of a piece until I'm sure its all working together, avoiding the possibility of overworking an area and regreting it later. So thanks again to all of you for helping me to get a 'feel' for the direction to take with this little piece, and I truly hope you enjoy it! :)

My cat has been frustrated lately since I've been overworking and had no time to play with him. Every night as soon as I open the door, he runs into me with meowing a lot like a jealous girlfriend, and forces me to keep petting him for ten good minutes. Despite such an obsessive behavior he shows, he easily gets satisfied and starts enjoying grooming himself. I wish if I were a cat and could forget all daily stresses so quickly...

The Ulysses S. Grant Memorial is a presidential memorial in Washington, D.C., honoring American Civil War general and U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant.

The Grant Memorial, begun in 1902 as the largest ever commissioned by Congress at the time, was created by sculptor Henry Merwin Shrady and architect William Pearce Casey. Sculptor Edmund Amateis assisted Shrady as the monument neared completion in 1921. Shrady spent 20 years of his life working on the memorial and died, stressed and overworked, two weeks before its dedication in 1922. The platform for the monument, made of Vermont marble, is 252 feet (77 m) long and 71 feet (22 m) wide and is divided into three sections. The tall, middle section features a 10,700 pound, 17-foot-2-inch (5.23 m) high equestrian statue depicting Grant aboard his war horse Cincinnati on a 22 1/2-foot high marble pedestal. Grant is flanked, on either side, by fighting Union Artillery and Cavalry groups. Surrounding the main pedestal are four shorter pedestals, each supporting a bronze lion in repose guarding both the United States flag and the flags of the Army. The memorial was the largest bronze sculpture cast in the United States at that time.

FYI: Henry Merwin Shrady was the grandfather of Flickrite Sotto Voce

Thing about abstract is having the courage to do it and the sense to stop while the going is good as it is so easy to overwork.

Kara E. Walker - A Subtlety or the Marvelous Sugar Baby

an Homage to the unpaid and overworked Artisans who have refined our Sweet tastes from the cane fields to the Kitchens of the New World on the Occasion of the demolition of the Domino Sugar Refining Plant

The TV series is set in the Cambridgeshire village of Grantchester during the 1950s, Anglican vicar and former Scots Guards officer Sidney Chambers, and subsequently his successor Will Davenport, work with the overworked Detective Inspector Geordie Keating to forge an unlikely partnership in solving crimes.

The oldest part of the church – the chancel – dates from the 14th century, the nave and tower are 15th century, whilst the south aisle was added in the 1870s. The font is believed to be Norman, and the 17th century pulpit probably came from the chapel of Corpus Christi College.

It seemed a good idea before I shot this, and this shot was the one I wanted to do before I set up the shoot. Now it just makes me wonder - where has he been? Was he planning a Reggie Perrin and if so why did he bottle it?

I took this back in November, but it has taken me a while to upload it - figured it went well with the Shoebury beach stuff, seeing as that's where it was taken!

just made the addition of balsamic glaze and prosciutto to Colleen's regular tart recipe.

Savory Rhubarb Tart

recipe courtesy Colleen Yuhn

First, make a galette dough*:

2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour

1 tsp white sugar

1/4 tsp salt

1 1/2 sticks cold unsalted butter (Plugra or similar), cut into 1/2 inch pieces

7 tbsp iced water

Directions: Mix flour, sugar and salt; cut butter in with a pastry cutter. Add ice water slowly, as needed, until dough sticks together. Do not overwork. Separate into two disks, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least 30 minutes. (You will only use one disk for this tart.)

*Consult baking cookbook for more technique-related information for a successful galette dough.

Next, for the contents of the tart:

3 cups rhubarb stalks, cut into 3 inch lengths and then cut on a bias (be sure to remove the leaves, as they are poisonous)

1/4 cup fresh goat cheese

nuts — either pine nuts (1/2c), pecans or walnuts (3/4c), toasted

half a red onion, sliced thin

1 head garlic

2 tbsp flour

2 tsp white sugar

3-4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, plus drizzles for garlic

1/4 tsp kosher salt

1/4 tsp ground cardamom

Preheat oven to 350 F. Roast a head of garlic: cut top of head off, drizzle with olive oil and bake for 30 minutes. (Extra garlic cloves are great spread on bread, in pasta dishes, etc…)

Turn oven up to 400 F. Poach red onions in olive oil over low heat until thoroughly soft, no browning. While they soften, mix the flour, sugar, salt and cardamom with the rhubarb. Set aside.

Roll out one disk of dough and place in a 10″ square tart pan with removable bottom. Trim excess and save for another use. To assemble the tart, remove red onions from olive oil, reserving oil for later. Crush 4 or 5 cloves of the roasted garlic. Place onions and garlic on bottom of tart. Layer nuts on top of onions and garlic. Arrange rhubarb in aesthetically pleasing pattern atop nuts. Drizzle remaining onion-infused olive oil over top of tart. Place tart on parchment-covered baking sheet. Bake at 400 F for approximately 30-35 minutes. Tart will pull away from pan and will be golden when done.

Let cool for 10 minutes. Dapple small pieces of goat cheese across top of tart and serve.

Carol will probably never again agree to "Hey, can I take a picture of you really quick?".

When a Chinese dollar-circus came to town, I had to go enjoy the fantastic performance by the overworked children.

I didn't expect, however, to become part of the show ... but when they saw the foreigner (me) in the audience, they pulled me up on stage and had a girl juggle me above her head in a big copper pot with her feet!

I was hot, exhausted, overworked, and ready for bed. And yes, I took this in the mirror, like all the cool kids on flickr.

TRF: I have a long torso and short legs, which makes shopping for a one piece bathing suit to be fairly difficult.

Overworked and underfucked.

But full of toys XD
