This was taken near the base of Overlander Falls. These falls are in Mt. Robson Provincial Park in British Columbia, Canada. There is a short but beautiful trail that leads here from Yellowhead Highway.

The AEC bus (YRC 45) off the road between Agri and Horosan, in north-eastern Turkey. The bus had an underslung AEC AH470 horizontal engine (7.7 litres) and five-speed gearbox. From new it had been part of the Burton-on-Trent Corporation bus fleet in England, before being sold to Safaris Overland for use on the route(s) out to India and back. The main problem with these particular AEC horizontal engines were the 'wet' cylinder liners which made them prone to overheating, and blowing cylinder-head gaskets, when worked hard or in very hot weather – or both. In the hard winter conditions the engine ran perfectly.

Not far from the road is the Aras River; at this spot it is still a relatively young river since it rises in the Erzurum region, but over a thousand kilometers later it empties into the Caspian Sea.

Overland is a coffeetable book based on my four-week trip along the Overland Route in 2014 with some material from other trips added. Unmistakably the Big Boy 4014 makes an appearance, too. Unrestored and on the first road trip in 2019.

This is the AEC Reliance bus I was driving from London to India; it is photographed here parked by a deserted Turkish beach towards the eastern end of the Mediterranean. Before we lost sight of the sea a handful of the passengers had a last swim before we turned inland. The weather was turning colder, but not enough to deter the swimmers; three days later I had to buy a set of snow chains for the rear wheels as the weather had deteriorated drastically. I'd planned to drive through Syria and Iraq to get into Iran, but at the Turkish–Syrian border we were denied entry as the Syrian–Iraq border was closed by the worsening political situation between those two neighbouring countries. This left no other option than head north-east and enter Iran at the Bazargan border crossing – and unfortunately, this meant we couldn't avoid the severe weather of the eastern-Turkish winter. We ended up stuck in Erzerum for nearly a week until the infamous 8,000-odd foot Tahir Pass re-opened after the massive snowfall in that region; in a way the delay wasn't too bad after all as one of the passengers, a girl from New Zealand, had to be driven to the Erzurum Hospital with a suspected collapsed lung. I remember that of the three doctors who examined her, two were smoking cigarettes as they did so. The temperature dropped to around -40 C; the bus engine had to kept running continuously for six days and nights to prevent it freezing solid. On a slightly increased tick-over speed the engine consumed four or five gallons of diesel a night. One night in Erzurum we heard gunfire in the small hours, and in the morning, not far from the hotel, we saw a pile of dead wolves in the road – they had been shot in the night by soldiers when they came into the town looking for food. The 1971-72 winter in that region had been the coldest for over two hundred years.

Here is the 45-seater Van Hool bus parked in a small town on the road between Pokhara and Kathmandu. I'd stopped for diesel and was being careful not to buy too much as the bus owner didn't want to sell it with anything like a full tank – not even a quarter full, he'd said. In Delhi, the bus had been cleaned, inside and out; the interior showed no evidence that forty-plus people had recently travelled from Europe in it – apart from a bit of inevitable road dirt, the thing was spotless.

While I was there I had a good wander round, being nosey as usual. To my mind, it's better to explore such places on your own; I found something to eat and then drove on. Several days later, there was to be one last trip to be done – but with the little 20-seater bus – this one was too long for the narrow, twisting dirt road up to the Chinese border.

I like using telephoto lenses for landscapes, they compress the perspective in a way that I find pleasing. This is a short, but very steep walk down a winding path (Especially with a 1kg Sigma 150-500 zoom in tow).

This is somewhere on the road from Pokhara to Kathmandu; this region is sub-tropical with lush vegetation. There was very little traffic on this road in those days, it's probably quite different now.
