Car accident on the 405 Freeway 6.17.2019. Vehicle jumps the median.

Whilst hiking the Overland track in Tasmania we crossed this small stream in the forest.

Turkey: October 1971

Before I was pulled back on to the road one of the passengers carefully climbs out of the bus. The wire hawser had been attached to the front tow pin; minutes later the bus was back on the road and the passengers glad to get back in it as there was no warmth in the afternoon sun now. That night we stayed in Erzerum in cheap hotels. In that part of the world these places were not much more than a dollar a night; they were just basic accommodation, but it was sometimes advisable to use your own sleeping bag on top of the bed . . .

Behind the bus is the Aras River; the water level was higher than normal and fast-moving, presumably due to melting snow. This river flows eastwards and eventually empties into the Caspian Sea.

The Overlander scenic train, awaiting departure from the underground tunnels at the Britomart Transport Centre in downtown Auckland, New Zealand.

The Overlander is a journey through the heart of the North Island, travelling between Auckland - New Zealand's largest city and home of the Sky Tower, to Wellington - New Zealand's arts and culture capital.

Along the way you pass the Central North Island ski towns of National Park and Ohakune, popular with young and old alike. You also see fantastic views of New Zealand farmland, the volcanic plateau, Mount Ruapehu, the world famous Raurimu Spiral, and stunning river gorges - all from our panoramic windows or open air viewing decks allowing you the best possible views.

All carriages feature large panoramic windows giving sweeping views of the magnificent North Island. The Observation carriage includes a mix of seating including lounge style seating. The lounge style seating is arranged at the very rear of this glass backed carriage enabling you to enjoy a totally unique Overlander experience.

Been working on creating my own Overlanding Rig using sets 60117 and 60115 bases, combining them, and using lots of random bits to create this. Still a long way to go, but It is a work in progress.

Persepolis, Iran: 25 December 1971

YRC 45 was bought new in May 1962 by Burton-on-Trent Corporation and given the fleet number 45. The chassis number was AEC Re 2MU3RA3910; it had been fitted with a (C37F) Harrington Cavalier body, number Hn 2581. The bus had a mid-mounted, horizontal AEC AH470 engine (7.7 litres) and five-speed gearbox.

This photo of the bus was taken from the main terrace at the remains of the ancient city of Persepolis, in southern Iran. One of the passengers had seen enough and was wondering how much longer we'd be there as It was now the afternoon of Christmas Day and we had to drive another 40 miles to reach Shiraz, to find somewhere to stay for the night. Without much trouble we found an inexpensive hotel that not only served some food but bottled beer as well.

Great Overland Station in Topeka, Kansas began as a Union Pacific railroad passenger station on January 27, 1927. Along the way, it survived floods, was remodeled for railroad offices, abandoned in 1988, and damaged by fire in 1992. Railroad Heritage, Inc. leased the building from the Union Pacific Railroad to prevent the building's demolition.

Union Pacific Corporation donated the station to Topeka Railroad Days, Inc. 6 years later, and the Great Overland Station Project Team was established to direct efforts to preserve the station and transform it into a railroad heritage museum. In June 2004, The Great Overland Station opened its doors.

The Great Overland Station is quite beautiful, and this is a spectacular special event space, but as of the beginning of 2006, Great Overland Station is still building toward its potential. When I visited the museum in 2006, there wasn't enough to make the Station a destination for anyone but serious train buffs. Other then the structure itself, the biggest attraction is the 100 or so freight trains that pass the building daily. Perhaps more can be done with Topeka's connection to the Harvey House restaurant chain.

Harvey House Luncheons and tours of the Great Overland Station are available to groups with advance reservations.
