The starliner watches over the classic TWA Hotel. Although it was, in my humble opinion, an overhyped hotel, it is a rite of passage for any AvGeek to spend a night here.

My brother loaned me the exquisite Sony 100-4999 GM OSS 4.5-5.6 tele zoom lens. I took this shot last night as the Moon temporarily moved out of the clouds. On my APSC the max tele focal length is 600. That is plenty for some reasonable detail, especially if you use post processing to enhance. Rest assured, the Sony G Series lenses aren't overhyped. They deliver, even on lesser cameras like my Sony a6000.

after church brunch. i think butterfingers is pretty overhyped, except for the french toast and unlimited refill coffee (they even give you some to go in a big cup upon request). the one in chungdam is much better than the one in gangnam. but the girls were happy to see heinz ketchup, instead of bootleg 오뚜기 brand.

IS HUBRIS HURTING SCIENCE?

Ambition is the fuel of progress—the stuff that pushes wide-eyed scientists and engineers to pull endless all-nighters in the lab, that motivates inventors and entrepreneurs to bounce back after each defeat. But does having too much of this special sauce lead to self-delusion? At what point does one’s fervent belief in the potential of a new technology or therapy translate into overhype? We sit down with Guardant Health CEO Helmy Eltoukhy to talk about the need for internal reality checks—and ask a question that would be unthinkable in Silicon Valley: Are we rushing our way to failure?

Day 5 – When I woke up in the morning, I noticed everything outside was coated with a thin layer of snow. The town center of Ginzan Onsen is a pedestrian-only zone. It does not take you more than 20 minutes to walk end to end. It is particularly nice in the evening when the ryokans are all lit up and the streets and bridges are illuminated by gas lights. Most visitors come here for the Taisho period romantic ambience. For me, I feel like it is a bit overhyped.

Is ClickBank a Scam? Or, as the Kids Would Say, is ClickBank Legit?

Is ClickBank an elaborate racket or a genuine online business?

Yes, it’s true. Some ClickBank affiliate programs are of low quality. Overhyped junk products are a dime a dozen. But that’s half the story.

There are solid programs on there too.

ClickBank’s like a mega supermarket packed with assorted goods.

Don’t like what’s on the shelf? No problem. Move to another aisle. You’ll soon find what you want.

With a seemingly infinite number of digital products from entrepreneurs all over the world to choose from, your perfect product awaits.

That’s why millions of entrepreneurs are on the platform. Some ClickBank affiliates and vendors have been with them for decades.

But, ultimately, it’s your reputation on the line. You owe it to yourself and your audience to double-check every program before you join it.

I scored a Pentax K1000 for really cheap a few weeks ago and decided to test it out today. My gut instinct that it's way overhyped just because it was really popular in the 70s and now everyone recommends the camera they've heard of stands. The K1000 and AE-1: They're fine, but way too expensive, so should not be recommended to people.

The cupcakes at Sweet in Hoboken were by far the best I've ever had, and that includes the overhyped ones at Magnolia in Manhattan (I am not a big cake or cupcake person, so that might not be saying much.) I especially liked their nice, firm texture - many American cakes tend to be too fluffy and spongy for my taste. Another bonus: They come in miniature sizes which makes it humanly possible to sample more than one, and if you have someone to share them with, you can even try four of them! They were all delightful, but my favorite was the red velvet one. Two sticky thumbs up!

I feel like these are one of the most overhyped Jordans. Definitely not worth the resell value. I wouldn't have these if I didn't find them for a steal.

After a very grey, though overhyped storm, finally some nice weather. This is much nicer, don't you think?

I love my Tesla. But as you know, I'm no longer a big fan of the founder.

And I've become massively skeptical of the potential for self-driving cars - indeed, I suspect that I got both the timing and sophistication of the trend wrong. I've known this for some time; last August, I filmed a video and filmed an overview titled It's Not the Trend That Matters, It's the Timing! (Real 'Self Driving' Isn't Here, and Won't be For a Long, Long Time!). You can read the post here, and I share it again below.

Obviously, I was a big believer in the potential for self-driving technology, by writing such trends overviews as 54 things you haven't thought about with electric, self-driving cars. Yet, owning a Tesla with FSD ('full-self driving', which it obviously is not) makes you quite jaded on the potential for the trend. What's the basis for my reversal? Experience - as I note below, while what is there is a massively impressive technical feat, getting it to 100% reliability will likely never happen in my lifetime - and that is what is necessary for it to succeed. It's not "full" self-driving. It's "self-driving sometimes in known, predictable conditions."

Others are picking on this; just yesterday the Washington Post ran a rather pointed article on how Tesla is failing to deliver on the lofty promises set in years past:

---

In April 2019, at a showcase dubbed “Autonomy Investor Day,” Musk made perhaps his boldest prediction as Tesla’s chief executive. “By the middle of next year, we’ll have over a million Tesla cars on the road with full self-driving hardware,” Musk told a roomful of investors. The software updates automatically over the air, and Full Self-Driving would be so reliable, he said, the driver “could go to sleep.”

How Elon Musk knocked Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving’ off course

Washington Post, March 19, 2023

---

That clearly didn't happen, and it is far, far away if it were to ever happen. The debate has been raging for quite some time, with other publications such as the New York Times and The Guardian weighing in for quite a while on the problems with the technology. This is a painful reality for the many Tesla 'fanboys' as we call them. Yet even they are losing faith:

----

And some of Musk’s most loyal customers have given up hope that his initial promise will come true. Charles Cook, a commercial pilot, and engineer from Jacksonville, Fla., owns a Tesla Model Y that he frequently drives in Full Self-Driving mode.

While he is amazed at what the technology can do, he is surprised by both the slow pace of progress and the status of Musk’s promises. “Someone might have purchased Full Self-Driving thinking they were going to have a robotaxi by now and spent their hard earned money on that,” he said.

“Now his engineers may have laughed at that” but “a customer may have spent $15,000 thinking they’re going to have it next year.” Those customers, he said, lost out.

“I do not believe you can remove the driver on this hardware suite, ever,” he said.

How Elon Musk knocked Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving’ off course

Washington Post, March 19, 2023

---

Keep in mind this is not just a Tesla thing. It's pretty clear that at this point in time, most of the efforts towards self-driving technology have not lived up to the promise, despite some magically significant technological leaps. The efforts so far are pretty extraordinary - but not quite enough to be fully reliable and safe 100% of the time.

I've learned something through this whole experience. The future, while full of potential, doesn't always pan out to be what we think it might be. And the ability to cut through the hype, for a necessary reality check on many of the trends, is always in order. Many trends fit this bill, making this a critical part of trying to assess and understand the future.

I've always tried to practice this, and am always prepared to admit when I am wrong.

he “Great Man” theory of history is usually attributed to the Scottish philosopher Thomas Carlyle, who wrote that “the history of the world is but the biography of great men.” He believed that it is the few, the powerful and the famous who shape our collective destiny as a species. That theory took a serious beating this year.

To be sure, there are individuals we could blame for the many painful and disturbing things that happened in 2006. The conflict in Iraq only got bloodier and more entrenched. A vicious skirmish erupted between Israel and Lebanon. A war dragged on in Sudan. A tin-pot dictator in North Korea got the Bomb, and the President of Iran wants to go nuclear too. Meanwhile nobody fixed global warming, and Sony didn’t make enough PlayStation3s.

Watch More

But look at 2006 through a different lens and you’ll see another story, one that isn’t about conflict or great men. It’s a story about community and collaboration on a scale never seen before. It’s about the cosmic compendium of knowledge Wikipedia and the million-channel people’s network YouTube and the online metropolis MySpace. It’s about the many wresting power from the few and helping one another for nothing and how that will not only change the world, but also change the way the world changes.

The tool that makes this possible is the World Wide Web. Not the Web that Tim Berners-Lee hacked together (15 years ago, according to Wikipedia) as a way for scientists to share research. It’s not even the overhyped dotcom Web of the late 1990s. The new Web is a very different thing. It’s a tool for bringing together the small contributions of millions of people and making them matter. Silicon Valley consultants call it Web 2.0, as if it were a new version of some old software. But it’s really a revolution.

Leoville Poyferre was like an abandoned kid amongst the three Leovilles in St Julien, hardly ever had any attention paid to it. As a second growth, it does possess its charm and beauty, may not be the best, but certainly not the worst lot in the Bordeaux 83 blind tasting.

It was ripe and floral on the nose (where’s the coffee?). Content wise it was really elegant and pleasant and easygoing wine. I’d pay a little more attention over this label than the over-rated and overhyped Leoville Las Cases.

Having tried a few other barleywines since this was last out, I was really afraid that I'd overhyped this in all the waiting.

I didn't. I just took the first few sips and realize why I missed it so much. I think it's even hoppier and fuller than last year. I really can't believe how much I like it, and it's not just from the build up. It's really that good.
