Some rare cats, clouded leopards, etc., had it even worse, many with hospitalism (pacing back and forth incessantly before the bars or windows of their cages).

- I really enjoyed China (although Beijing was tense, depressing in fact, as I was there only 3 - 4 weeks after the massacre in Tian'anmen square; my spirits really lifted after I left for Xi'an), the locals were generally friendly, I loved renting a bike and exploring around various cities like Xi'an, Chengdu and Kunming, and the food in Western China (Gansu and Sichuan) was consistently the best I've had on any trip to date, simple and delicious. Every meal was a pleasure. But you'll see dark things en route anywhere that make an impression, and one I remember on this trip was this zoo, which I presume was pre-eminent in the country. Rare Asian leopards were in small, low cages, pacing back and forth compulsively before the bars or the mesh; most animals were isolated from one another, and I best remember a large tiger sitting on a small, raised, green mound down below in a large, wide, open, walled pit outside, exposed, and howling or yelping every few seconds continuously, clearly nuts, and heart-breaking. The thing to do for some local visitors was to pick up small stones and throw them down at it. When one young laughing woman a few metres to my left did this I objected, and then she turned and laughed at me!

- Pet ownership was still rare in China in 1989, and caring for pets and interaction with animals will teach people that animals, or at least mammals, have feelings and are more like us than we'd ever guess before getting to know them. I'm sure the animals in this zoo receive much better care today than they did when I toured it decades ago.

- But that said, we often project onto animals when we shouldn't (including mammals). The owners of boas or pythons should know and keep in mind that their snakes don't love them back. Too many owners have fallen asleep in bed or on the couch eating cheezies and watching TV while cuddled up with their constrictor wrapped around them and didn't wake back up if it was feeling the least bit peckish. www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWXAtHJ0yc8 Oscar Brown Jr.'s 'The Snake': www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxVymZxekEw

Todmorden’s beautiful Art Nouveau shopfront, with its large glazed windows framed by sinuous timber mouldings, was added to an existing co-op drapery in 1909 to display household textiles and clothing fashions. The store is now in use as a bar and restaurant; many original interior fittings, including a fine wooden staircase, survive.

The dream of uniformity was never achieved for exterior designs. Instead, co-op architects opted for fitting in harmoniously with the surroundings – hence neo-Georgian, neo-classical, and neo-Tudor were especially popular, along with what Lynn Pearson calls a ‘mild form of Art Deco’. But interiors became much more standardised, not least because the CWS shop-fitting department had cornered 85 per cent of society business in this area by 1939. Gone, according to one commentator, ‘is the frowsiness, the untidiness, the greasiness, the flies and the odours’; in came hygienic surfaces of glass and chrome, Vitrolite (coloured glass), Ruboleum (lino flooring), and Marmorite (artificial marble). The future looked bright!

Why Todmorden, West Yorkshire, is one of the best places to live in 2021

Vegan food, liberal views and a fleet of ebikes are ushering in this former mill town’s boho renaissance

We can smell the joss sticks from here. “Tod” has overtaken its overhyped, possibly overpriced neighbour Hebden Bridge. Anything goes here, really, and that includes the trains — more than 30 direct a day to Manchester alone and plenty to Leeds and Bradford — explaining Todmorden’s growing appeal.

The bohemian rebirth of this lofty former mill town has been gathering pace for a few years, says David Hancock, 54. “More new people have moved in, some from Hebden Bridge and also from Halifax and further afield. That feeling of knowing all

Let's all thank reality television for making someone think that calling the remodel of this shopping center (with a Mervyn's as its anchor store, mind you) an "extreme makeover" will somehow make it cooler.

Today has been a good day. I played some racquetball, saw Interstellar, watched the RSL game, and then played some Super Smash Brothers. I'm bummed RSL got absolutely demolished, but it's kind of okay because of the insane phenomenality of Interstellar. Oh. My. Goodness. I totally overhyped it to everyone I spoke to afterward yesterday, so I will try not to do that here. But ya'll should go see it. It's pretty good... I guess...

Angkor Thom loosely translates to "great city." it does live up to that. definitely not possibly to overhype.

IS HUBRIS HURTING SCIENCE?

Ambition is the fuel of progress—the stuff that pushes wide-eyed scientists and engineers to pull endless all-nighters in the lab, that motivates inventors and entrepreneurs to bounce back after each defeat. But does having too much of this special sauce lead to self-delusion? At what point does one’s fervent belief in the potential of a new technology or therapy translate into overhype? We sit down with Guardant Health CEO Helmy Eltoukhy to talk about the need for internal reality checks—and ask a question that would be unthinkable in Silicon Valley: Are we rushing our way to failure?

We walked across the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday and spent an afternoon in Brooklyn, eating pizza at Grimaldi's (overhyped), ice cream at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory (delicious), wandering the Brooklyn Promenade (anticlimactic), exploring the Tobacco Warehouse at the Brooklyn Bridge Park (very cool), and then walked over the Manhattan Bridge (noisy) to get back home. It was a great day.

Chuck turned an otherwise calm Joe's pub venue into a pure Go Go like back in the DC. The crowd was overhyped and mostly native Washingtonians. If you weren't there, you should make sure to make the next one.

If you haven’t been living under a rock, you would know that a game named ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ was supposed to change gaming forever. What happened to all of this talk? In this article, we are going to diagnose Cyberpunk 2077’s rise to fame and how it suddenly came to a halt, if not a decline after it’s release.

Trying too hard but I spent many a day and night hanging out at this pub.

We went to Harvey's first nativity play tonight at school, entitled "Are we nearly there yet?'

I've noticed schools always do a modern take on the traditional nativity nowadays. Injects a bit of fun into a well versed story I suppose.

Well tonights story was about the Walker family who went on holiday, mithered by their children (With cries of 'Are we nearly there yet?' incase you hadn't guessed). Naturally their holiday led them across the deserts to Bethlehem (it wouldn't be a nativity otherwise!) where 'Mary & Jo' did their thing.

Anyway, it was a great play, seeing the kids jumping about, singing and dancing.

(Harvey was a villager by the way).

And you know what one of the best things is? I took my full camera bag, snapped away with a 70-200, and no one batted an eyelid.

That's why I love my children's school (that and many many other things of course). They don't restrict photography or filming. Not one parent I know of has a problem with it.

Parents are informed that their child may be photographed or filmed as part of school events, and if they wish to object, then they must do so in writing. I don't know of any parent that has.

I've filmed pretty much most of my daughters events at school, taken lots and lots of pictures, so we have a massive amount of memories to look back on in the future.

It's refreshing to see a school with such a common sense approach on cameras.

Naturally if I was to walk into the playground in the middle of lunchtime and just start snapping away I would be approached, and rightly so.

But they don't let media-led paranoia and overhyped fear get in the way of parents just wanting to record their children growing up.

Mind you, I didn't need to film it anyway, the school filmed it themselves, and both the infant and junior productions are available on DVD for £5. A very fair price indeed!

well isn't that special. I know I'VE been on the edge of my seat.

At stop at a reception hosted by Boston Consulting Group allowed me to get my overdue introduction to this often-overhyped augmented-reality eyewear. You know what? It really is kind of neat.

Morning hammock time and a yummy breakfast al fresco. A run on the beach road, ending with a dip in the ocean. Perfecto. Hot sun, blue sky, warm water. Lunch in the pueblo of carnitas tacos from Carnitas Merchant. So good. Perfecto. Fresh fruit pajetas afterwards - pineapple con chili and watermelon. Drove up to Playa del Carmen to hit the Mega market. Explored Akumal on the way back to Tulum. Dinner at the beautiful but overhyped Hartwood. Walk home on the beach.

This piece was inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting “The Last Supper.” Playing off of the overhyped Mayan calendar that supposedly predicts the end of the world on December 21, 2012, the video shows the delegates of the United Nations Security Council falling victim to many of the various conspiracies associated with the apocalypse. In keeping with the theme of the original, I wanted to maintain a linear image with characters seated behind a large table. Also, with each council member signifying a different apostle, I wanted to keep the central figure a holy entity. As time expires on the central clock, the background takes on a post-apocalyptic image before blanking to red. Because the orginal work is so famous and has been recreated so many times, I wanted my piece to resemble but not copy work that had been created thus far.

Overhyped. There was nothing so dreamy about this lake.

Roof of the Pedrera. These are the only two pictures you will find in my photostream of anything by that overhyped fraud Gaudi.

We took a long boat ride to see these famous caves in Laos that supposedly house thousands of Buddhas ... but we were greatly disappointed to fin an overhyped and overpriced "hole in the wall" with very few carved stone Buddhas.

Much better then the overpriced and overhyped Kdunk, although the service isn't quite as nice.

Really nice, despite being hated by critics, but loved by the those who choose not to pay for their news.

Mind you, thanks very much Metro for calling our road "one of London's most overhyped and over-venerated streets".

The cupcakes at Sweet in Hoboken were by far the best I've ever had, and that includes the overhyped ones at Magnolia in Manhattan (I am not a big cake or cupcake person, so that might not be saying much.) I especially liked their nice, firm texture - many American cakes tend to be too fluffy and spongy for my taste. Another bonus: They come in miniature sizes which makes it humanly possible to sample more than one, and if you have someone to share them with, you can even try four of them! They were all delightful, but my favorite was the red velvet one. Two sticky thumbs up!

the paua ravioli was rather overhyped. sauce was great, won ton skin was great, paua filling wasn't.

which kinda defeats the purpose.

We have more cars from the Studebaker Driver’s Club car show…in fact I have also included some non-Studebaker cars!!!

1. A GRACEFUL ENTRANCE TO THE FAIRGROUNDS: We have an Auburn 8 entering the SDC car show. The last time I saw this car I saw it at last year’s Kiwanis Car Show and I even saw it at O’Reily Auto Parts this summer!

2. THE REAR END THAT WAS THE END OF THE LINE: The SDC Car Show was open to other makes and models…when we arrived to the car show in the early hours of the day, there were more Studebakers, Avantis and even Packards than other brands. But there were quite a handful of vehicles that were not Studebakers. Here I found this pristine 1994 Mercury Capri roadster. I talked about this vehicle in a previous edition of “Tramwood”. The vehicle was discontinued in 1994 and already it had been a collectable vehicle despite it’s econobox origins and the vehicle never kept up with it’s rival, the Mazda Miata which is already about to introduce a new model sometime between 2024 or 2025!

3. BUG AROUND AND FIND OUT: I spotted this Volkswagen Beetle parked near the Model Railroad Museum and this red Bug featured a roof rack. Given that the engine was in the back and the truck was roomy enough for a spare tire, the roof rack would be a popular option for many VW Beetle owners.

4. YES…THERE WOULD BE AN EDSEL SOMEWHERE: Ford Motor Company’s infamous Edsel did find it’s way to the SDC Car Show. I spotted a Villager Wagon parked at the parking lot. The Edsel nameplate lasted for only three years. Edsel was supposed to be direct competitor to Buick, Oldsmobile and Pontiac in General Motors and Dodge and DeSoto in Chrysler. But however the vehicles were overhyped, ugly and didn’t have the superior quality compared to Ford, Lincoln and Mercury.

5. WISCONSIN MUSCLE IN A SHOCKING HUE OF PURPLE: The AMC Javelin roared it’s way into the SDC car show and well it had the color of purple as featured on many Dodge Challengers (For a refresher, American Motors was bought by Chrysler in 1987). Hmm, wonder if there will be a meeting for that iconic Wisconsin-based American Motors sometime soon?

6. GM TRIES IT’S HAND IN MOTORHOMES: There were some people who came to the Studebaker Driver’s Club meeting with their campers and they camped in the grounds of the Manitowoc County Fairgrounds…I spotted two GMC Motorhomes that were in pristine condition. Although I did spotted a truck camper on one of the Studebaker pickup trucks…Studebaker didn’t do a RV like Dodge or GMC.

7. EYE CATCHING INTERIOR I: There were nicely restored Studebakers that featured nice looking interiors…I spotted this golden Studebaker Champion with a very nicely quilted golden interior. What was nice it was parked next to a gold Studebaker Avanti.

8. EYE CATCHING INTERIOR II: Not to be left out…this Avanti II had a pretty nice interior as it came out of the showroom in the 1970s…leather seats, a wooden rimmed steering wheel. The Avanti II had the interior of the original Avanti right until 1986 when Avanti Motors declared bankruptcy.

9. THE IRONY NOT LOST: This white Studebaker Commander coupe had a license plate that read “Last Day” and a “Goldwater 64” sticker on the windshield. Studebaker ended operations in South Bend in 1963 and production of the vehicle continued right until 1966 being built in Canada.

10. WIP ON A VIP CRUISER: I spotted this Studebaker-built school bus which featured a interior that had a pretty cool looking ceiling, a wooden (vinyl?) floor and a pair of seats that must of come from a conversion van.

11. RESTOMOD CHAMPION: The most striking vehicle from the SDC meeting and car show was this Studebaker Champion that has a General Motors LS power plant, a steering wheel from the Chevrolet Corvette C4 and even a shifter and center console box that must of come from the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro or anything that looked like it came from General Motors.

12. STYLING PROGRESSION FROM 1950 TO TODAY: We close out the SDC series of “Tramwood” with a old Buick Century (I think) parked a parking spot behind the Hyundai Santa Cruz. Next year, the Studebaker Driver’s Club meeting will be taking place in Iowa.

Near the wholesale fish market there are about 10 small lanes of little shops selling all sort of Japanese meals. These are mainly for the workers, but tourist are flogging in. There are some shops that are overhype by social media, therefore the big crowd. We could be bother with those shops.

The tourist centre of Bruge was not my style. Overhyped restaurant owners trying to run businesses is no fun. The few hours Gloria and I spent going oooh and aaah at the chocolates in the windows (and then aaaaagh when we saw the prices) is more than enough for 1 lifetime.

After hearing about this for weeks, I finally got to try it for myself! The wait in line was about 20 minutes, but people in line kept telling me it was worth the wait. And, I guess I agree. It was good! But at the same time, it may just be overhyped. Next time, I think I'll just get the ice cream part of it. Took too long to finish all that sweetness!

And we finally did find our trail, though not until mid-afternoon. We decided to tank up on runoff from the snow and traverse the 5 miles to Tilted Mesa for the night, a few miles short of our goal of Nankoweap Creek. The traverse followed a sometimes narrow and exposed shelf high above the canyon floor, but the many dire assessments we'd read about the Nankoweap Trail's dangers proved way overhyped, especially with no snow on the narrowest parts.

Dinner at L'Elephant Restaurant, one of the top restaurants in Luang Prabang (No.1 on Tripadvisor), famous for their French dishes.

"Served with Dauphinois Gratin and Buttered Vegetables"

I had high hopes - it was after all the No.1 voted restaurant and there were good reviews.

My entree certainly looked beautiful and impressive when it arrived. (I was looking forward to it) The sides of potato and vegetable were done nicely and tastily.

The first sign of doubt crept in when I am unable to effectively slice through the duck. I dismissed it and went ahead anyway. First bite : taste was good - protein seasoned well. Then a second bite, a third, a fourth and so forth. The meat was a tad overdone, turning an edge on the tough side despite the pinkish appearance. It was a bit of a chewing affair, which dampened by expectations.

The dish never live up to my expectations and I couldn't help wondering if everything may have been a tad overhyped especially after I found out that at the proteins served at my table, were all on the tougher side of chews.
