Yes, it was the second to last event ever held at Rockingham, Oct 12, 1931. Promoted and of course overhyped by Boston Madison Garden Association's Dick Dunn. It was reduced to 50 miles when the reality of the track condition and actual stars that showed up to race was realized. Nevertheless, unlike other venues the New England race fans showed up in very good numbers (55,000). The last race ever held at Rockingham was June 26, 1932 when The AAA Contest Board took over the oversight and produced a terrible race with unsafe conditions and carnage that was terminated after 15 laps, that truly was the end of AAA championship level racing in New England. I can share some of many contemporary news articles if anyone is interested. footnote: Leon Duray -though I believe he may have no showed for this Oct 12, 1931 50 miler had the honor of having raced on the Rockingham original dirt track of 1925, the Rockingham pine (1925-28), and finally on the second version of Rockingham dirt (1931-32).

I wasn't sure about this place. It seemed like it might be kind of boring. There were even official highway signs saying "Ave Maria Grotto Exit 2 Miles," like some overhyped, culturally threadbare minidisney attraction. But when we got to see it, we were instantly won over. Brother Joseph Zoettl, a Benedictine Monk, took several decades and recreated miniature versions of ancient cities and buildings, along with some more free form shrines to things like the statue of liberty. The scope of it was surprising, and the whimsy made it obvious that he was probably a pretty cool guy with a good sense of humor. Thanks, Brother Joe!

The museum is overhyped, in my opinion. The most interesting parts of the museum are the items related to how people escaped East Berlin.

t’s time to venture off the usual route and discover something unspoiled, authentic, and untouched. If you’re tired of packed hill stations and overhyped tourist spots, then Northern Kashmir’s Gurez Valley is your answer. Tucked away in the Himalayas, this secluded haven remains largely off the tourist radar. However, beyond its raw natural beauty lies something even more exciting: hidden treks in Gurez Valley that only the most adventurous travelers explore.
Indeed, these undiscovered routes lead you past historic villages, alongside thundering rivers, through thick pine forests, and literally up into the clouds. So, if you’re an avid hiker or someone seeking unusual travel experiences, then these Gurez trails are waiting for you.
Why Gurez Valley is a Trekker’s Dream
The Gurez Valley lies in the Bandipora district, about 125 km north of Srinagar, near the Line of Control (LoC). Due to past security concerns, tourists couldn’t access it for decades, which helped preserve its natural beauty. As a result, the Kishanganga River carves through the snow-capped peaks surrounding Gurez, making the terrain ideal for hiking, trekking, and nature walks. Best of all, many trails here remain unexplored, perfect for true adventure seekers looking for hidden treks in Gurez Valley.
5 Top 5 Hidden Treks in Gurez Valley You Must Explore
1. Khandiyal Peak – A Short Hidden Trek in Gurez Valley
Duration: 2–3 hours round trip
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Highlights: Panoramic views of Dawar town and the Kishanganga River
The Khandiyal Peak trail starts just above Dawar’s main town. It is ideal for sunrise or sunset hikes, as it offers sweeping 360-degree valley views. Moreover, since it’s close to local settlements, you can easily explore it with a guide.
2. Habba Khatoon Base – A Cultural and Scenic Hidden Trail
Duration: 4–6 hours round trip
Difficulty: Moderate
Highlights: Views of Habba Khatoon Mountain, folklore-rich location
Named after the legendary Kashmiri poetess, this mountain is a cultural symbol of the valley. Along the way, you’ll pass through dense pine forests and wildflower-filled meadows. Furthermore, locals often say, “You don’t just hike Habba Khatoon — you feel it.” Thus, the trek offers a deep cultural connection along with scenic charm.
3. Tulail to Chorwan – One of the Most Remote Hidden Treks in Gurez
Duration: 1–2 days
Difficulty: Moderate to hard
Highlights: Remote villages, riverside paths, untouched natural landscapes
For adventurous souls, this is a serious trek. The trail takes you from Tulail to Chorwan, one of the last villages near the LoC. Consequently, you’ll experience pure solitude with nature—no restaurants, no mobile networks, and no crowds. Therefore, it’s best suited for experienced trekkers who are looking for complete immersion.
4. Minimarg Ridge – A Secret High-Altitude Trek in Gurez Valley
Duration: 5–6 hours
Difficulty: Moderate
Highlights: Alpine flowers, snow bridges (in spring), open ridgelines
Minimarg trail, you’ll enjoy epic views of the ridges separating Gurez from Astore (Gilgit-Baltistan). In addition, springtime offers a burst of alpine flowers and scattered snow patches, making it perfect for photography. Hence, it’s ideal for nature lovers and photographers alike.
5. Dawar to Bagtore – Village Hopping on a Hidden Trek in Kashmir
Duration: Full-day trek
Difficulty: Moderate
Highlights: Village life, army outposts, river crossings
Trek from Dawar to Bagtore to fully experience Gurez’s spirit. Along the way, you’ll walk through charming villages and past army posts. As a result, you’ll witness how locals live, grow food, and survive the region’s harsh winters. This untouristed route is one of the valley’s true hidden gems. Additionally, it gives you a firsthand look into authentic Himalayan lifestyles.
Best Time for Hidden Treks in Gurez Valley
Visit between May and September. During this period, the weather is mild, the trails are clear, and the meadows bloom vibrantly. However, you should avoid winter visits—roads close, and deep snow makes access impossible. Thus, summer and early autumn are the most suitable times to trek.
Important Tips Before Starting Any Hidden Trek in Gurez
Get necessary permissions from J&K Tourism or local army posts before certain border treks.
Hire a local guide. Locals know the safest and most scenic paths.
Pack essentials: strong boots, dry food, power banks, and water filters.
No mobile coverage: Inform someone in advance and use offline maps.
Respect nature: Leave no trash, avoid plastic, and don’t disturb wildlife. Moreover, always stay on marked trails when possible.
Where to Stay During Your Hidden Treks in Gurez Valley
Most trekkers base themselves in Dawar. Recommended stay options include:
Homestays: Budget-friendly, cultural experiences with local families.
Government guest houses: Book these in advance.
Limited campsites: Bring your own gear.
Pro Tip:Always call to confirm bookings. Internet access is unreliable. Therefore, planning ahead is essential.
