Look, I didn't believe it at first either. My roommate claimed he was making actual money playing video games, and I thought he was full of it. Then I saw his PayPal account.
That was eight months ago. Since then, I've gone down the rabbit hole of game-based side hustles, tried most of them myself, and talked to dozens of gamers who are quietly pulling in $500+ every month.
If you've ever googled "can you really make money playing games on your phone" or "real money earning games" at 2 AM (like I did), this guide is for you. The gaming income world is full of scams and overhyped garbage, but there ARE legitimate opportunities if you know where to look.
Here's what's actually working in 2025, based on my personal experience and conversations with gamers who are doing this successfully:
1. Game Testing and Quality Assurance
What Is Game Testing?
I got my first testing gig by pure luck – a Reddit post looking for mobile gamers. Three hours of finding bugs in a puzzle game later, I had $45 in my PayPal account. These days, game testers make between $15-30 per hour basically playing broken games and telling developers what sucks about them. It's not always fun (some games are truly terrible), but it's legit money.
How It Works
I primarily use PlaytestCloud, but there's also BetaFamily and Intellizoom. You'll need to record yourself playing while talking through what you're experiencing.
Went out to grab one after reading the front cover story of Chicagotribune.com announcing the Angus Third Pounders, which is overhyped.

Was excited to try this place, but found it overhyped. Average-quality doughnuts in stunt-food drag. Meh.

Many folks worry about needing drawing skills before diving into wood carving. Honestly, I think it’s a bit overhyped. Sure, sketches can help, but you don’t need to be the next Picasso. Just grab some basswood (my fave), and let your chisels do the talking. Focus more on the feel of the wood and how those tools glide through it. Make mistakes? Perfect! That’s how you learn. Every chip you carve teaches you more, and soon, you’ll find your unique style without stressing over perfect drawings. Do You Need Drawing Skills to Start Wood Carving? Let’s Find Out

Many people I respect frequent this establishment. I just can't get over the pretentious "I'm so Indie it hurts" atmo and sub-par, overpriced, overhyped cupcakes. Not to mention the nauseating effect of its incessant jackhammer noises from the grinder and whatever other machinery they run behind the counter.
