Is it not some bittersweet type of irony, that the girl with the flame hair is so afraid of fire?
It is overwhelming; a heat you can't escape. It clings to your every fibre as if it cannot bear to be apart from you and you let it, until it begins to irritate you and you finally wash it off. It takes your breath away and makes you wrap your arms around your chest and close your eyes, just briefly. It is often welcome. On a winter's night it is the warm hug you long for. It is the way you stretch your toes out and lean them closer to it and you almost count them like a child because it takes them in its hands and warms them up. It is what fills the cold, empty space beside you beneath the sheets each night. It is bittersweet and sometimes it is just bitter but sometimes, like marshmallows, it is just sweet.
And yet it's not just the fire that leaves me breathless. It is not just the fire that I'm afraid of.
- today I went and took photos with Lucy and her little sister Sophie. Then I went back out and happened across the bonfire in the field and I danced in it for awhile and I almost, almost, managed to forget how much I hate fire.

While he was at rest, something strange happened. A sprout began to form at the top of his back and in his time of meditation he became consumed by something of nature. He was in the confines of his home, but it still somehow was able to creep into his pores. The mushroom spore locked into his skin and began to spread throughout his body. His time here was very short as the decomposition process began.

This colourful nudi has to be pretty dedicated to get up on top of the grey soft coral (Capnella sp.) at Bare Island... perhaps it's feeding on it, or maybe just trying to get to the other side. Why DID the nudibranch cross the coral???

I've been wanting to take this for so long. I'm glad it worked out the way I had hoped (rare occurrence). In saying that, I believe I've just flickr-cursed this picture since the photos I like are not liked on here, and vice versa. Oh well.

Davenport, CA - 2013
Davenport has become one of my favorite places to visit along the coast. Its a funky little spot, and every time I go I end up in some sort of an adventure. This visit was no different. After spending some time in another spot I made my way to the pier. To get to the pier you have to traverse down an extremely steep and loose trail with a shear drop off on one side. I am not a fan of heights and was going to opt out and do something else, my wife had fire in her eyes and in nothing flat down she went. Lets just say down and up is not so easy with a camera bag on your back. I had a few private moments on the climb back up, wondering what indeed would happen if the weed that I was using as leverage to pull me up the face of the trail gave way. It worked out and made for a good story over dinner.

i photographed this woman as she was interviewed. she's the manager of a local women's shelter. she spoke boldly about the 18 months she suffered as a victim of
domestic abuse. she seemed pretty unfazed as she spoke in general terms about having to escape for fear of her son's life and her own.
then i noticed a scar on her neck.
she apologized at the end of the interview for not going into more specific details, and then her chin started to quiver and she started crying. she cried because she said talking about the abuse doesn't bother her, but having her new husband hear about it and suffer upsets her.
brave, brave woman.

Juvenile yellow mongoose Cynictis penicillata, Rietvlei Dam Nature Reserve.
There were three yellow mongooses and they all took to their heels when they saw our vehicle approaching. However, curiosity overcame apprehension and this youngster turned back, and keeping an eye on us it approached cautiously.
Came across a joke concerning the plural form of this animal's name: A man who once lacked mongooses for his zoo, and not knowing the correct form of the plural, wrote the following letter:
To whom this may concern
I would like to purchase one mongoose from your zoo.
PS Could you send another mongoose with that one!

Christian Testimony: God’s Guidance Allowed Me to Overcome Temptation in the Workplace (Audio Essay, Part 1)
Almighty God says, “A world of gaiety and splendor, one that is becoming more and more so. When people look upon the world, their hearts are drawn to it, and many are unable to extricate themselves from it; great numbers will be beguiled by those who engage in trickery and sorcery. If you do not strive for progress, and are without ideals, you will be swept away by this sinful wave” (“Practice (2)” in The Word Appears in the Flesh). Almighty God’s words expose the evil of this hedonistic world, filled as it is with all kinds of temptations: money, fame, status, power, eroticism…. These temptations are like poppies, a “beautiful trap,” and these are also the means and methods by which Satan tempts and corrupts people. Most people can’t understand Satan’s tricks, are unable to escape these temptations, fall into these traps, and so live in sin and depravity, suffering and corrupted endlessly at the hands of Satan. I recall my own experience, and I know that if not for God’s protection and the guidance of His word, I would also have fallen inextricably into this “beautiful trap.” …
Almost midnight. After a few hours of walking the capital, yet more steps awaited. Huffing and puffing enough to scare away the local wildlife, we made it up to Calton Hill.
A windy, cold and occasionally wet evening meant that only us and a couple of other people were up on the hill. Without a torch, it was difficult to see, even with the local light pollution. This made me slightly nervous. I wouldn't walk through my local town park at night because of the crime... yet here I was in a capital city doing just that. Gulp.
This view is one I have shot before, but it is significant in that 24 hours earlier the whole area was covered in snow. All of Texas was affected, in fact; and, many people are still suffering from the after-effects of an unusually strong winter storm last week. With temperatures around 12ºC on Saturday, snow still on the ground, the disc golf course was bustling with people who needed to get out, myself included.

It is a dangerous world out there, but we can overcome the dangers if we just overcome that which divides us.
Evening along the inner passage, in the wind's eye, the clouds bunched against the mountain peaks creating a pillowy illusion for the senses. The light is bewitching--shifting from spot to spot as the sun tries to overcome the stinginess of the clouds. The clouds are a jealous bunch here and think themselves the masters of the heavens. They don't give-up their little peek-holes easily. Certainly not to one as high and mighty as the sun.

This is the start. Yay I start this 52 proyect because lots of you, lovely people, have inspired me to do one. So that's my great resolution this year.
With this project I hope grow as photographer, to get Photoshop (I have to save first) and learn how to use it, try to transmit my feelings in each picture and above all, enjoy doing it.
All that I need now is overcoming, willpower and constance. It's the key to start everything well. Last year has not been a good year, but I keep all the people I met and good moments. I want this year to be better, but it's in my hands, it's my turn to act.
Finally guys, thank you so much for all your lovely comments and support, and for being part of this, because without you I hadn't had the encouragement to go ahead.
