Tantallon Castle is a semi-ruined mid-14th-century fortress which sits on a promontory in the outer part of the Firth of Forth, which can be seen in the background. The last medieval curtain wall castle to be constructed in Scotland, Tantallon comprises a single wall blocking off the headland, with the other three sides naturally protected by sea cliffs.

Tantallon was besieged by King James IV in 1491, and again by his successor James V in 1528, when extensive damage was done. Tantallon saw action in the First Bishops' War in 1639, and again during Oliver Cromwell's invasion of Scotland in 1651, when it was once more severely damaged. It was sold by the Marquis of Douglas in 1699 to Hew Dalrymple, Lord North Berwick and the ruin is today in the care of Historic Scotland.

During my recent visit to the Outer Banks of North Carolina on February 1-3, my main objective was to capture my first Milky Way image rising over the horizon and over the old wooden pier at Avon Beach.

I set up my D750 in one site and had it shooting a time lapse of the Milky Way rising over the ocean with a 24mm lens and then I used the D850 and took different Milky Way images first using a 50mm 1.8g lens then later switch to a 14mm f2.4 lens for broader captures.

Before you know it the blue hour came in and started washing out the Milky Way then a little while longer and I had my sunrise.

By sunrise I had moved on to a site north of Avon for some dune sunrise images.

Thanks for stopping by.

Rain clouds in the distance as seen looking south at Buffalo Outer Harbor. Can see rain falling behind the grain elevator.

Amazingly as small as New England is and how much has been lost in the last half century there is still a lot of variety to be found if you know where to look. This little independent road is less than 30 min from where I live but I've only photographed this line once prior, but thanks to a tip I knew they were running so paid a second visit.

The Bay Colony Railroad was once a promising and progressive little shortline that was born in those halcyon post Staggers days when branchlines were being shed nationwide and startups were being formed all over to step in where class 1s were stepping out.

For decades the BCLR ran a disconnected group of branches and spurs around the Eastern Bay State, some of it as a contract/concession on state owned properties and some on lines they owned the perpetual freight rights. Over time traffic dried up on some routes and other routes were abandoned. And on Jan 1, 2008 this railroad's 25 year operating contract with the Commonwealth expired and they lost the bid to continue operating the Cape Main and all properties east of Middleboro, the vast majority of their trackage.

But the rights on the Millis Branch and the Watuppa Branch near New Bedford belonged to the BCLR outright so they continued to serve those two tiny branches. However, the Millis line lost its major customer in 2009 when the GAF shingle plant shut down leaving that line just about moribund, this little 7.5 mile stretch is still very much a going concern.

They currently have just two active customers on their line extending east from the wye at Nash Road in New Bedford as far as Mid City Scrap in Westport. However, in years past the route (which dates from 1875 and was once part of the Old Colony system) was much busier and continued on to Fall River to serve the Watuppa mills in the upper part of the city. Those outer 4 miles saw their last train operated by Conrail in 1980, but the rails remained in place rusting for nearly three decades before finally being lifted and turned into a train.

The BCLR of today runs as needed but usually at least once or twice a week to interchange cars with Mass Coastal which comes down from Taunton. Here they are headed east toward the interchange as they pick their way through the swamps approaching the Faunce Corner Road grade crossing at about MP 2.8. Leading the way is chop nosed GP9 1705 which was originally built in Apr. 1956 as Great Northern 704.

8-16-15 The MS Veendam Sailed through the Outer Hebrides west of Scotland

...from the archives.

Found under a log, so I broke out the UV light. After that I kept on searching with the light and realized they were everywhere. Probably saw 20, at least.

When substantially all you have to photograph are Canada Geese and Mallard Ducks, that's what you photograph. Others will be along soon. It really is still just the very end of winter. Spring hasn't even taken its coat off yet.

In a month's time there will be many more bird opportunities, and in two months' time, lots of macro bird and insects. For now, we photograph the loyal creatures who have stuck with us all winter.
