first light out there...

On arrive toujours à trouver des trucs parfois difficiles à expliquer, sous l’œil de notre objectif!

Ici, une image qui, je ne sais trop par quel procédé, s’affiche comme légèrement tridimensionnelle.

We always seem to find some things difficult to explain, under the eye of our lens!

Here, an image that, I do not know by what process, appears slightly three-dimensional.

Interesting impressions

The Outer Hebrides - also known as the Western Isles - stretch for 130 miles and look out on their western side to the Atlantic Ocean.

Here on the edge of Europe is a striking mix of landscapes from windswept golden sands to harsh, heather-backed mountains and peat bogs. An elemental beauty pervades each of the more than two hundred islands that make up the archipelago, only a handful of which are actually inhabited.

Lewis and Harris form the northernmost island in the Hebrides. Though actually part of the same land mass, they are thought of as different islands and each has its own distinctive culture, traditions and heritage. Lewis in the north is the largest island in the group and its main town of Stornoway is a busy centre of island life, its natural harbour a thriving fishing port.

Harris is home to the world-famous Harris Tweed, which has to be made on these islands if it carries the name. Across a narrow isthmus from the more mountainous North Harris lies South Harris, presenting some of the finest scenery in Scotland, with wide beaches of golden sand trimming the Atlantic in full view of the mountains and a rough boulder-strewn interior lying to the east.

Further south still sit a string of tiny, flatter islands including North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist and Barra. Here breezy beaches whose fine sands front a narrow band of boggy farmland are mostly bordered by a lower range of hills to the east. Uniquely, one of the beaches on Barra also doubles as a landing strip for the scheduled flights from the mainland!

The Hebrides remain the heartland of Gaelic culture, with the language spoken by the vast majority of islanders, though its everyday usage remains under constant threat from the national dominance of English. Its survival is, in no small part, due to the influence of the Free Church and its offshoots, whose strict Calvinism is the creed of the vast majority of the population, with the sparsely populated South Uist, Barra and parts of Benbecula adhering to the more relaxed demands of Catholicism.

The natural environment of the Hebrides make it ideal for walking and cycling of all standards while the superb Atlantic beaches draw surfers from around the globe. Fishing for salmon and trout, as well as sea angling, is also highly popular and of the highest quality. The clear, pollution-free Hebridean waters, also produce some of the best seafood in the UK.

Lying offshore into the Atlantic, the remarkable deserted Island of St Kilda, a World Heritage Site, is a major attraction which can only be reached by day boat or live-aboard cruise vessel, subject to weather conditions and the permission of its owners, the National Trust for Scotland.

Candid eye contact street photography from Glasgow, Scotland. I saw this girl engrossed in her mobile phone and noticed the two rings around her eyes showing some degree of tiredness - it just totally fit with the 'inner circle/outer circle' sign for the subway. I triggered the shutter just as she looked up from her phone at close range, enjoy full screen detail by pressing 'L' or clicking the image.

The brightness of the total eclipse varies over 5 orders of magnitude, from bright, hot pink solar prominences to the outer corona. This is a 1-second exposure designed for the latter, but you can still see the former at the bottom edge.

We reserved a room in Plattsburgh, NY about a year ago (Vermont was already fully booked, but Plattsburgh had plenty of rooms and no bump in prices yet). The morning of the eclipse dawned clear, but clouds were predicted to gather by afternoon, so we chased blue skies about 3 hours northeast to the southern outskirts of Sherbrooke, QC and had perfect weather. (Fortunately, I had insisted to my husband that we bring passports.) The Canadian customs website said there was a 40-minute wait at the entry station on the freeway, so we nipped over to the side road a few miles east and had the port of entry all to ourselves.

The total eclipse was … hard to describe, but all it’s cracked up to be — a striking spectacle. The inner corona was much brighter than I expected, blazing to the naked eye in sharp contrast to the suddenly black sun within.

Cropped image not a pano and I've noticed that it's degraded on upload to flickr. That's the second frame at 2.39 : 1 that has not uploaded very well.

This is a composite of three exposures containing lightning strikes merged together as layers using the Lighten Blend Mode in Paint Shop Pro X4. The three exposures were at f/10 using my Canon 17-40mm f/4L and each exposure being 1 second long. I used a Singh-Ray VND filter and hand held a 2 stop Singh Ray GND Filter. Using my wired remote shutter control I locked it so that it kept taking shots taking note of the exposures that captured lightning strikes as they were quite frequent. The morning I took this, I ventured out at 5:30am from the Ramada at Nags Head down to a fishing pier hoping to capture some good sunrise photos but instead was treated to a thunderstorm up north heading out to sea. A beach chair left out on the sand next to the pier behind me made a great foreground for this shot.

Shields Road station on the Glasgow Subway is located on the South Side of the River Clyde and hosts the largest Park and Ride facility on the Glasgow Subway system with around 800 parking spaces. The station typically floats around 500,000 entries/exits per year, though you wouldn't think so given the platform isn't too much wider than the door at the end of the platform.

Despite the name, the entrances to the station and car park are actually on Scotland Street and I believe there have been proposals to rename the station. It's at the top of Shields Road though, so there is some degree of sense in the name.

Lots of commitments and activities at home. Haven't been on Flickr at all lately. I will be by to check out your photos soon.
