MuCEM + Fort Saint-Jean, Marseille, France - 2013 -Architects: Rudy Ricciotti and C+T architecture
Views, sea, sun, a mineral quality, which all must be orchestrated by a program that will become federal and cognitive. First of all a perfect square of 72 m per side, it is a classic plan, Latin, under the control of Pythagoras. Within this square, another of 52 m per side, comprising the exhibition and conference halls identified as the heart of the museum.
Around, above and below are the service areas. But between these areas and the heart, openings entirely bypass the central square and form interconnected spaces. More interested by the views of the fort, the sea or the port, the culturally overwhelmed visitor will choose this route. Along two interlacing ramps, he will then plunge into the imaginary of the tower of Babel or of a ziggurat in order to climb up to the rooftop and on to Fort Saint- Jean. This peripheral loop will be a free breathe, enveloped by the smells of the sea from the proximity to the moats, a pause to dispel any lingering doubts about the use of the history of our civilizations. The MuCEM will be a vertical Casbah.
The tectonic choice of an exceptional concrete coming from the latest research by French industry, reducing the dimensions to little more than skin and bones, will affirm a mineral script under the high ramparts of Fort Saint-Jean. This sole material in the colour of dust, matt, crushed by the light, distant from the brilliance and technological consumerism, will commend the dense and the delicate. The MuCEM sees itself evanescent in a landscape of stone and Orientalist through its fanning shadows.

It may look like a big mess, but it is all a part of getting 20,000 cars a day through a major construction project.
Trying to orchestrate this photo was WAY more difficult than it shoulda been, largely because Tonks and Lupin were in SERIOUS demand.
Whether you’re an accomplished composer/orchestrator or a newbie who’s just learning the piano, you need to focus your practice on the basics, such as going through your scales. If you gloss over these exercises, you may wind up building your technique on a bad foundation. Read the whole article: Are Piano Scales Important?

You go to Longwood Gardens. You see the sweeping fields of carefully orchestrated colors, the seas of yellows spilling into the oceans of purple, all perfectly uniform and all perfectly controlled. You are blown away. How, you wonder, could they do it? As you stare in amazement, considering the spectacle before you, your eye catches something wrong. There! In the oceans of purple, there's a lone red flower, gleaming like a stuck pixel in an otherwise perfect picture. Is it a mistake? A bit of whimsy? The truth remains a mystery.

This carefully orchestrated double exposure was taken in the pre-photoshop days. My cousin, Brian, and I exposed a roll of 35mm film of a mantis against a black background using a macro zoom lens. I then rewound and reloaded the film, and exposed Brian in the left of the frame using a 50mm lens (and various garden tools). If you examine the right of the frame, you'll see a vertical stripe where the film was not quite aligned between the two exposures.
I had a lot of fun with this shot. I told people that this "thing" broke our porch light, and that the cat wouldn't go out at night. They accused me of fancy darkroom techniques until I showed them the negatives. Instant believers.
This oil painting was completed only seven years after the end of an 80-year Dutch revolution against Spanish oppression. Yes, eighty years. During this time, Spanish troops had slaughtered entire towns. Amazingly, during this same period, while fighting for their basic survival, the Dutch had also become the most important trading center in northern Europe.
By the time this painting was completed, the Dutch Republic was the most economically wealthy and scientifically advanced of all European nations. That wealth, and its backbone built on ships, is well displayed in this painting. It has the typical Baroque depth of field, carefully orchestrated multiple scenes, and balletic poses wrapped in lush fabrics. But, unlike the Baroque of Catholic Europe, the focus here is not a church saint or government figure.
This is a relatively democratic Baroque. Although the woman at center appears to be the wealthiest figure, she goes unnoticed by those around her. They are wrapped up in the ordinary activities of caring for a baby, selling vegetables, & telling sailors' tales. Even the god on the fountain has his back turned, away from the self-importance of any one person & out toward the sea and its capitalist riches.
