Orchard Orbweaver (Leucauge argyrobapta)
The Orchard Orbweaver is shy, and drops from its web straight to the ground if it feels threatened.
Disclaimer: The background of this image was changed to green from the original dirty gray to help bring out the colors of the spider.
I thought I'd seen most of the common spiders in this area last year. But as the daylight was fading on Sunday I noticed something that looked like debris sitting in the middle of a spider web. It took a while to find the front of it, but when I did I discovered one of the most adorable spiders of all, the Acanthepeira stellata - Starbellied Orbweaver.

Infraorder Araneomorphae - True Spiders

Family Araneidae - Orb Weavers

The male was across the porch from the big female on the web. He had a tiny little bit of web attached to the wall, but was otherwise webless.
Neoscona crucifera, male

Order: Araneae. Family: Araneidae. Species: Araneus diadematus (Clerck, 1758). Also known as the European Garden Spider, Diadem Spider or Cross Spider. Native to central and northern Europe. (Salem, MA)
Leucauge venusta--this is apparently a male. It had a little bit of a web on some leaves, I think, but not the large web of a female.

I had just finished trimming our hedge on Monday morning, being careful to leave the spiderwebs intact. Still, it must have been disruptive for the residents. Afterwards I found this orchard orbweaver on my orange extension cord (left). I carefully guided her off the wire so that I could photograph her underside (right). Mary escorted her back into the holly.
