Leucauge venusta--this is apparently a male. It had a little bit of a web on some leaves, I think, but not the large web of a female.

I had just finished trimming our hedge on Monday morning, being careful to leave the spiderwebs intact. Still, it must have been disruptive for the residents. Afterwards I found this orchard orbweaver on my orange extension cord (left). I carefully guided her off the wire so that I could photograph her underside (right). Mary escorted her back into the holly.

This guy's web was about 3 feet wide, and constructed of long stretchy spoke strands, and with even the slightest breeze it can move several inches in any direction, so it's much easier for this guy to capture its prey than for us photographers to capture it!
Luckily this morning was dead calm with a lingering fog, but even then it was still a challenge, and it took about one hundred captures to yield a dozen or so decent shots.

I am arachnophobic. And I'm trying to get over it... I had my dad stand close by today as I photographed this lady... just in case I needed to be rescued. I was terrified and fascinated. Talk about a heart pounding adrenaline rush. My mom tells a story about how my great grandmother would leave her kids in the bassinet on the porch while she worked in the garden or did laundry. These spiders had built a canopy around the porch and the idea was that they would keep the bugs off the kids. It surprises me that this spider's benevolence actually reassured me a little this morning...
