She hangs out in her web only at night. I've seen her every night after dark, but never during the day. Photographed in my garden, Wallaceburg, Ontario.

Verrucosa arenata-9/25/2014, Arrowhead spider deconstructs web everyday. Here this one holds the remnants of its web as it climbs to the shelter of a leaf.

Araneus marmoreus. Rock Creek Park, Washington, DC, USA.

It appears to have been consuming its shed exoskeleton after molting. This behavior serves an important biological function, as the old exoskeleton contains valuable proteins and other nutrients that help the spider recover from the energy-intensive molting process.

Araniella displicata

Large Orbweaver (Araneidae) suspended over a river at the Analamazaotra Special Reserve near Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, Madagascar.

Spiderwebs were everywhere this morning--a foggy morning, with downy woodpeckers chasing each other with territorial earnestness, and webs made by at least three different species of spiders (probably more). What month is it, anyway? Southern Indiana, USA.

The Spiney Backed Orbweaver also captures prey using beautifully woven circular webs. Hanging exposed, she uses color and spiney projections to ward away enemies. "Eat Me," she dares say.

Taken with 65mm MP-E lens. It was in the shade and the wind kept blowing the web so this was the best I could get.

These seem to be common around here. They are just too gorgeous for words.

After laying all her eggs the garden spider looks thin and weak - a few bugs and she will be back in shape.

Why did I choose thee? Let me count the ways......1. I think you are very photogenic! 2. I had a zoom lens and did not have to get too close to you to check you out. 3. You are a perfect example of the greens and browns of nature. 4. You have a Christmas tree on your back, and you make me want to sing Christmas carols in the summertime. 5. We can be friends, because sometimes you just don't feel like shaving your legs, either. 6. I see new pictures of things every time I look at you - in your shapes on your back, and in the leaf veins, and in the light reflections, and in your web (in fact, it looks like you wrote the word "No" in your web diagonally in the upper right corner, so you remind me of another spider named Charlotte a little bit). 7. Your color is fascinating, you body language is carefree that I'm there, and your arms are folded under your head like you are very comfortable. 8. I want to give you a name.

I know others may think you're a little creepy, but I chose you for my Choice set because you make me wonder what your life is like, if you ever take a vacation, and how meal planning is so different for humans, who go to drive-thrus to get food, while your meals unintentionally drive TO you.

Spider with an arrowhead-shaped white spot hanging on its web. Cherokee County, Georgia.

(Nephila clavipes) The male is the smallest one. The female looked to be about an inch long (body only). The male is about 1/5 the size of the female spider and is frequently oriented above and perpendicular to the female who hangs upside down. In some species, the female will often eat the male, but this is by no means a common occurance.
