A female operator who is a member of the Amalgamated Association of Street & Electric Railway Employees Division 689 can be seen in this cropped photo of a union meeting Nov. 7th during the first strike of two 1945 strikes.

The exact venue of this location has not been identified, but is probably Joe Turner's Arena. The image is cropped from a larger image entitled “Transit Union Strike Meeting: 1945” contained in this album.

Union President William F. Simms called for a “continuous union meeting” to begin at the Gayety theater near 9th & E Streets NW that was attended by around 2,500 workers.

The strike effectively began at 2:30 am when the first trains and buses were due to leave their barns while workers were in their meeting.

The rolling union meeting shifted to the Pythian Temple in the morning and still later to Turner’s Arena on 14th Street & W St., NW where 3,000 showed up.

The strike ended with a tentative agreement ratified at Turner’s arena whereby the workers returned to work for a 14-day period while negotiations continued.

Workers struck again two weeks later, but this time the company was seized by U.S. President Harry S. Truman and strikers ordered back to work.

The union is today known as Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689 and represents most employees of the Washington Metro system and some paratransit operators.

I've done this job before. The oiler part anyway.

From my seat in the tower crane at the Albany Capital, the Capitol building, which I operated for about 2 and a half years. This was a storm blowing in from the west and soon after this photo there were 65 mile an hour winds and a complete white out1

The operator for the ride.
