The first royal license to produce Granja chandeliers was granted in Spain in 1727. Now, with Isabelle, denizens of the twenty-first century may savor the rococo charms of this regal style. From the shapely body to the tiniest flourishes and fittings, castings are incised with intricate leaf and flower motifs and lace-like filigree openwork. Casted in Italy, these designs are original to Schonbek. Some crystal arms and scrolls are hand-formed in historic shapes. Highly stylized crystal ornaments contrast with the intricate castings.
I love the colors in this scarf.
Crocheted in a somewhat openwork pattern, but still effective in blocking out the wind and the cold. Very warm bubbly boucle scarf. Quite long, too, so it can be wrapped around the neck a few times.
Made in Lion Boucle.

Chapel of Saint James
Also called the Chapel of Álvaro de Luna who commissioned the chapel as a burial place for himself and his family. This is one of the largest of the ambulatory, occupying the space of three of the old chapels. Its floor plan is laid out in octagonal shape.
The elaborate pure Flamboyant Gothic style is reflected in the entrance arches with their openwork traceries and in the skylight of the blind arches of the interior, in the gables, the ornaments (openwork and hanging festoon), and the structural ribs rising from the floor that cross the vault forming a star.
The retable is a Gothic altarpiece, the work of Pedro de Gumiel with fourteen panels painted by Sancho de Zamora. He was contracted by María de Luna in 1488.
In the center of the predella is a scene of the Weeping Before a Dead Christ, and on its sides the Count Álvaro and his wife are portrayed as patrons accompanied by Saint Francis and Saint Anthony.
The two tombs in the center Álvaro and his wife Juana de Pimentel. The reclining figures are Hispano-Flemish sculptures by Pablo Ortiz. The praying figures in the corners are of high quality: a Knight of Santiago kneels at each corner of Álvaro's tomb, in the corners of his wife's tomb are four Franciscan friars.
In recesses in the left wall are the tombs of Juan de Luna (the son of Álvaro), Álvaro de Luna (father), the archbishop Juan of Cerezuela (brother) and Archbishop Pedro de Luna (uncle).

St George is on the High Street, among the bustling shops and cafes of the town, and I had not found it open before.
But on Saturday mornings, it is open between 10 and 12, so if we went shopping more often,.....
We were in town to take lots of books to the charity shop, as another round of de-cluttering comes to an end. And to go to No Name Shop to buy some stinky French cheese, fresh crusty bread, and maybe a pastry to follow?
The wardens were very proud of their church, and indeed its reordering have been carried out very well, and the old mixes well with the new.
Originally built as a chapel of ease to St Leonard in what was then called Upper Deal.

CHURCH OF ST GEORGE
II*
Built 1706-16 to designs of a local man, Samuel Simmons, with advice
after 1712 from John James of Greenwich. Refurnished in the C19 and again in the early C21. C20 W vestries.
MATERIALS
Red brick with lead roofs and a timber cupola.
PLAN
Galleried nave with small chancel projection and large complex of vestries and other rooms to the W.
EXTERIOR
Red brick with a pedimented E end surmounted by a small timber cupola. Five bay facades to N and S, the central bay breaking forward slightly. Round headed windows except in central bays on N and S, which have occuli. Large C20 vestries projecting at the W end.
INTERIOR
The interior has galleries on the N, S and W, with an additional upper gallery on the W. They have panelled fronts and are supported by stylised Tuscan columns with very high bases to accommodate the former pews. The sanctuary has a panelled barrel vault, and fielded timber panelling. Flat, panelled ceiling the full width of the nave with no intermediate supports.
PRINCIPAL FIXTURES
The church was refurnished in the C19, when the C18 furnishings were removed, and then reordered in the early C21, removing virtually all the C19 furnishings, including most of the seating. Royal arms of 1715 on the W gallery. Some C19 benches in the galleries, notably the Corporation pew with a carved mayoral chair and attached bench. Organ case of 1879 with fielded panelling and a pediment with openwork carving. There is a late C20 immersion font under the chancel floor. One hatchment. Some C18 and early C19 wall tablets, including a memorial to the well-known poet, translator and member of the Bluestocking circle, Elizabeth Carter (1716-1806), who was born nearby. E window has glass of 1950, containing a fragment of a window of 1867 with the word 'hope' designed to be read from the outside.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES
There are a number of interesting monuments in the churchyard, notably the tomb, a short, square column, of Captain Edward T Parker (1779-1801), a close friend of Admiral Nelson, who paid for the monument.
HISTORY
Deal has its origins in a small fisherman¿s village some distance from the village of what is now Upper Deal, but gained in importance in the C17 when the harbour at Sandwich silted up. There was an important naval anchorage just off the coast. The town was incorporated in 1699 and grew rapidly in the late C17 and early C18. St George's began as a chapel of ease to St Leonard's in Upper Deal and was funded by subscription. Begun in 1706, it was built slowly over a 10 year period, and benefitted after 1712 from a tax on coal imports into the town. It became an independent parish in 1852. A W tower was added in 1822, and removed in the early C20. A W porch and vestry were added in 1884, and further vestries were added in 1884, and there was another extension in 1981.

REASONS FOR DESIGNATION
The church of St George, Deal is designated at Grade II* for the following principal reasons:
* Handsome smaller earlier C18 church, designed by Samuel Simmons with advice from the nationally important architect John James;
* Retention of some early C18 fittings, including panelling in sanctuary and galleries with their pews;
* Monument to the noted C18 intellectual Elizabeth Carter.

Bronze wheeled stand for a vessel, with figural scenes on the side panels, and an animal frieze on the ring; some parts case in the lost-wax technique, others are mould-cast and hammered; the rectangular side panels are composed of cast rods which support à jouré (openwork) figural scenes with animal friezes below; a bird sits at each corner at the top; the uprights continue below the level of the frames to join the wheel-axles, which are also connected to the frame by roughly triangular supports (missing on one side); small pendants (fruit?) hang from rings attached to the bottom of each side (some are now missing); the wheels have six spokes. The ring at the top sits on a ridged rectangular support; the frieze is framed by moulded borders; part of the ring above Side B is now missing.
The cast ring shows a frieze of animals. These include pairs of lions attacking a creature, perhaps a man, and a grazing deer. The main decoration, in the à jouré technique, is in two unequally-sized registers. Side A: in the upper register, a sphinx wearing a flat cap; in the lower part, two birds. Side B: a lion, moving to the right, grips a long-necked water-bird by the neck; the lower register of this scene is in poor condition, but perhaps originally showed dolphins. Side C: A two-horse chariot with driver and passenger moves to the right in the next upper register. It has six-spoke wheels (like the stand itself) and the light cab has a quiver hanging on the side; the scene below may show three water-birds. Side D: a seated figure playing a stringed instrument is approached by two figures of whom the first plays a similar stringed instrument. The third figure, apparently a serving boy, carries a jug in his right hand and raises a stemmed cup to face level in his left; the lower register shows a long-necked water-bird attacks a fish or dolphin. Part of the ring and most of one leg are missing.

Central carriage archway surmounted by an overthrow featuring a swan and monogram on top of the restored wrought iron gates at Elmore Court in Gloucestershire. Either side are pedestrian gates with acanthus and hart's tongue fern motifs, moulded cornice, and openwork urn-shaped finials. The gates were made for Rendcomb College by William Edney of Bristol in 1716 to a design by Jean Tijou and were brought from Redcomb in the mid-19th century; they were restored between 1999 and 2001 with the assistance of a grant from English Heritage. Elmore Court has been family seat of the Guise Baronets for nearly 800 years, and the swan is the family's badge.

And now, finally, I reveal the outcome of this very special project initiated by a drawing of Marietta.
First, the "dress", the basis of this set.
It is composed of three separate elements.
- A blouse, almost entirely in old cotton lace, left transparent, with the cuffs and collar of ruffled cotton muslin, edged with fine lace. A fake pearl necklace and a jewel adorns the chest.
- A sleeveless dress using the same model as the Malina dress.
The top of the dress is cut in a dotted swiss fabric, ivory dots on white background. And the skirt is fashioned from a beautiful cotton lace embroidered sometimes as a "broderie anglaise" sometimes as an openwork "venice lace".
In addition, I added a bouquet embroidery on the bust, suggesting two-tone gold and silver, with a subtle mix of pearls and silk ribbon underlined by rayon thread.
The rest of the skirt is lightly beaded to evoke the glint of some snowflakes that would be lost there.
- A tulle petticoat, trimmed by a small and dense tulle ruffle and highlighted by a beaded silk ribbon.
Since this dress will be worn by a custom Vanilla, I used mine as model...
The frosted berries were made by me. The leaves are made of polymer clay, varnished and falsely frosted after baking and berries are made with beads, also frosted.

Zonder titel (1990) Dick Postema
Untitled (1990) Dick Postema
This work was made by artist Dick Postema. The two sculptures are made of openwork rusted Corten steel. Both the rust color and this old technique (also called openwork) refer to the past, while the abstraction clearly points to much more recent modern art. The statue was unveiled on March 9, 1990 by then mayor Bram Peper. The work had to be temporarily removed because of the renovation of the café around the corner. It then had to make way for a warehouse for the building materials, but has since been returned to its original location.

Elements from a Necklace
Made in Spain (Granada), about 1475-1525 (Nasrid period)
Inscribed in Latin (on pendant): "Hail Mary, full of grace"
These necklace elements, excavated at Granada sometime before 1916, represent the work of a virtuoso goldsmith who combined the techniques of filigree (openwork designs in fine gold wire), granulation (clustered spheres of gold), and cloisonne enamel. The salutation of the archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary inscribed on the center pendant indicates that the necklace was made for a Christian, while other fine pieces attributed to the same workshop (including harness ornaments and a Torah shield) were clearly commissioned by patrons belonging to medieval Spain's other major religions.

A short sleeve wrap with generous frontage (no pic, sorry!). It's felted of merino/tencel blend of a hideous salmony color (from Paradise Fibers, now discontinued).
I dyed the whole shebang blueish purple and added the little fringed pieces - which were my colorway samples for another project - very thrifty. The jacket is a bit shy of 6 oz, perfect for spring/summer.

Built in 1897 by Ewan Harper to replace an earlier chapel. The openwork spire is a local landmark. Closed in 2009 due to structural problems together with the congregation joining with St. Luke’s as an Ecumenical Church called The Bridge based on the St. Luke's site.
The building has been sold for commercial use and a planning application has been submitted for the demolition of the building and development for housing. It is hoped that the spire can be saved in some way.

"The Unschlitthaus in Nuremberg is located in the old town of Lorenz on the east side of Unschlittplatz. Built in 1491, it originally served the imperial city as a granary and later as the seat of the Unschlittamt. The monument is a station on the Historic Mile.
The Unschlitthaus was built in 1491 by Hans Beheim the Elder as one of seven “gran bins” for the city. Stylistically noteworthy are the massive sandstone construction, the elaborate Gothic portal and the openwork Gothic stepped gable. From a structural point of view, it is interesting that the Unschlitthaus was built into the old city moat and the construction incorporated the eastern moat wall. 76 roof hatches ensured ventilation of the grain floors in the four-story roof structure.
The store takes its name from the Unschlittamt, which was housed on the ground floor between 1562 and 1835 and served as the city's monopoly authority for unschlitt or tallow: all butchers had to sell the waste fat here. Until the 19th century, the mud was of great importance as a raw material for tallow candles (the poorer people's candles), soap, wagon grease and shoe wax.
Between 1839 and 1899 the building served as a school and a weights and measures office, and in 1899 the municipal pawnshop moved in.
During the Second World War, the northern part of the Unschlitthaus was destroyed in the RAF bombing raid on January 2, 1945 and was rebuilt after the war. The southern part of the building, including the impressive roof structure, has been preserved in its original condition.
On the west side of the building there is a wall fountain with the bronze face mask of Hieserlein (around 1400, original in the Germanic National Museum). The term 'Hiserlein' could refer to the trickling water of the fountain, but in Franconian the word 'Hiesel' is also an abbreviation of the male name Matthias or a name for a simple person. In 1974 the fountain, which had been removed 100 years earlier, was reinstalled.
In addition to the pawnshop, the Office for Urban Research and Statistics and the Electoral Office are also housed here.
Nuremberg (/ˈnjʊərəmbɜːrɡ/ NURE-əm-burg; German: Nürnberg [ˈnʏʁnbɛʁk]; in the local East Franconian dialect: Nämberch [ˈnɛmbɛrç]) is the largest city in Franconia, the second-largest city in the German state of Bavaria, and its 545,000 inhabitants make it the 14th-largest city in Germany.
Nuremberg sits on the Pegnitz, which carries the name Regnitz from its confluence with the Rednitz in Fürth onwards (Pegnitz→ Regnitz→ Main→ Rhine→ North Sea), and on the Rhine–Main–Danube Canal, that connects the North Sea to the Black Sea. Lying in the Bavarian administrative region of Middle Franconia, it is the largest city and unofficial capital of the entire cultural region of Franconia. The city is surrounded on three sides by the Reichswald, a large forest, and in the north lies Knoblauchsland (garlic land), an extensive vegetable growing area and cultural landscape.
The city forms a continuous conurbation with the neighbouring cities of Fürth, Erlangen and Schwabach, which is the heart of an urban area region with around 1.4 million inhabitants, while the larger Nuremberg Metropolitan Region has a population of approximately 3.6 million. It is the largest city in the East Franconian dialect area (colloquially: "Franconian"; German: Fränkisch).
Nuremberg and Fürth were once connected by the Bavarian Ludwig Railway, the first steam-hauled and overall second railway opened in Germany (1835). Today, the U1 of the Nuremberg Subway, which is the first German subway with driverless, automatically moving railcars, runs along this route. Nuremberg Airport (Flughafen Nürnberg "Albrecht Dürer") is the second-busiest airport in Bavaria after Munich Airport, and the tenth-busiest airport of the country.
Institutions of higher education in Nuremberg include the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg), Germany's 11th-largest university, with campuses in Erlangen and Nuremberg and a university hospital in Erlangen (Universitätsklinikum Erlangen), Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm and Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg. The Nuremberg exhibition centre (Messe Nürnberg) is one of the biggest convention center companies in Germany and operates worldwide.
Nuremberg Castle and the city's walls, with their many towers, are among the most impressive in Europe. Staatstheater Nürnberg is one of the five Bavarian state theatres, showing operas, operettas, musicals, and ballets (main venue: Nuremberg Opera House), plays (main venue: Schauspielhaus Nürnberg), as well as concerts (main venue: Meistersingerhalle). Its orchestra, the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg, is Bavaria's second-largest opera orchestra after the Bavarian State Opera's Bavarian State Orchestra in Munich. Nuremberg is the birthplace of Albrecht Dürer and Johann Pachelbel. 1. FC Nürnberg is the most famous football club of the city and one of the most successful football clubs in Germany. Nuremberg was one of the host cities of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
Franconia (German: Franken, pronounced [ˈfʁaŋkŋ̍]; Franconian: Franggn [ˈfrɑŋɡŋ̍]; Bavarian: Frankn) is a region of Germany, characterised by its culture and Franconian dialect (German: Fränkisch).
Franconia is made up of the three Regierungsbezirke of Lower, Middle and Upper Franconia in Bavaria, the adjacent, Franconian-speaking, South Thuringia, south of the Thuringian Forest—which constitutes the language boundary between Franconian and Thuringian— and the eastern parts of Heilbronn-Franconia in Baden-Württemberg.
Those parts of the Vogtland lying in Saxony (largest city: Plauen) are sometimes regarded as Franconian as well, because the Vogtlandian dialects are mostly East Franconian. The inhabitants of Saxon Vogtland, however, mostly do not consider themselves as Franconian. On the other hand, the inhabitants of the Hessian-speaking parts of Lower Franconia west of the Spessart (largest city: Aschaffenburg) do consider themselves as Franconian, although not speaking the dialect. Heilbronn-Franconia's largest city of Heilbronn and its surrounding areas are South Franconian-speaking, and therefore only sometimes regarded as Franconian. In Hesse, the east of the Fulda District is Franconian-speaking, and parts of the Oden Forest District are sometimes regarded as Franconian for historical reasons, but a Franconian identity did not develop there.
Franconia's largest city and unofficial capital is Nuremberg, which is contiguous with Erlangen and Fürth, with which it forms the Franconian conurbation with around 1.3 million inhabitants. Other important Franconian cities are Würzburg, Bamberg, Bayreuth, Ansbach and Coburg in Bavaria, Suhl and Meiningen in Thuringia, and Schwäbisch Hall in Baden-Württemberg.
The German word Franken—Franconians—also refers to the ethnic group, which is mainly to be found in this region. They are to be distinguished from the Germanic people of the Franks, and historically formed their easternmost settlement area. The origins of Franconia lie in the settlement of the Franks from the 6th century in the area probably populated until then mainly by the Elbe Germanic people in the Main river area, known from the 9th century as East Francia (Francia Orientalis). In the Middle Ages the region formed much of the eastern part of the Duchy of Franconia and, from 1500, the Franconian Circle. The restructuring of the south German states by Napoleon, after the demise of the Holy Roman Empire, saw most of Franconia awarded to Bavaria." - info from Wikipedia.
