High-mountain tea or gaoshan tea refers to several varieties of oolong tea grown in the mountains of central Taiwan. It is grown at altitudes higher than 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) above sea level, and includes varieties such as Alishan, Dayuling, Yu Shan, Wushe, and Lishan. The high humidity and natural precipitation in the high mountain ranges of Nantou and Chiayi Counties make the region a suitable environment for growing tea plants. High Mountain Oolong is a tea that holds all of its original nutrients that are within the unfermented green tea. It does not hold the usual grass-like taste but due to the fermentation process that removes the harsh ingredients, it allows the tea to taste flavorful.

Nantou County is the second largest county of Taiwan. It is also the only landlocked county in Taiwan. Its name derives from the Hoanya Taiwanese aboriginal word Ramtau. Nantou County is officially administered as a county of Taiwan.

Its mountainous area makes it a tourist destination; Sun Moon Lake is located in this county. Other well-known areas of the county are Hehuanshan and Sitou. Notable cities in Nantou are Nantou City and Puli Town. The official butterfly of Nantou County is the broad-tailed swallowtail butterfly (Agehana maraho). Nantou's tung-ting tea is one of the most famous and high-quality oolong teas grown in Taiwan.

I was so surprised by meeting the tea terraces while we went hiking to the Golden Orange Tree Mountain trail last Sunday. It is a very original forest with very narrow and difficult paths. We even encountered a Taiwanese(Formosa) Black bear that day. To find this tea terrace, I felt I seemed to go to the wrong world. :-) How those farmers go so far here to plant them everyday by walk. That is why the Taiwanese Oolong tea is so fresh and nice to taste. :-)

But I saw the photos on Flickr and Instagram

Everyone seemed so happy with the ephemera

It was in a state of pure bliss that they gazed

Pretending they were’t just interested in selfies by cherry blossoms

I imagined visiting them myself

Sipping on hot oolong tea

Reading Kenzaburō Ōe in the bathtub

My own silent cry

The shadows on the wall grew

Like one long human stamen

I thought maybe my identity would slip away

Just a glimpse for now then gone tomorrow

I got up and paced with a film of memories on my fingertips

Wondering if the cherry blossoms would even bloom again

Maybe this could be the last year for them.

Who knows what might happen next

This world is strange

Nothing is permanent anymore

We cannot count on the delicate

Which can be a personal matter.

I thought of them slowly trampled until

vanishing as part of the grass

Mistaken for a weed

as children race across green

On a cold winter’s night as a child

You wonder while seeing your first sigh leave your body

Becoming a night ghost

Will it ever come back to you?

Or will it remain a disappeared thing until at least the next year?

Camellias were in fine form yesterday on our brief visit.

Keep this lovely garden in mind when visiting the Stanford-Menlo Park-Palo Alto area. Admission is free, plenty of free parking -- and it's a great place: www.gamblegarden.org/visit-us/

"a genus of flowering plants in the family Theaceae. They are found in eastern and southern Asia, from the Himalayas east to Japan and Indonesia. There are 100–300 described species"

And en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camellia_sinensis

is the plant that yields tea!

"White tea, yellow tea, green tea, oolong, .... and black tea are all harvested from one of two major varieties grown today, C. sinensis var. sinensis and C. s. var. assamica, but are processed differently to attain varying levels of oxidation with black tea being the most oxidized and green being the least."

My usual morning beverage. I'm finishing a cup of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lapsang_souchong as I type this. Many varieties!

The highest tea estates in India are found in and around Munnar, in the hill ranges of Kerala's Western Ghats.

In the wild, tea bushes can grow to three or four metres in height, but on the plantations they are kept to waist height by plucking the top leaves for tea.

The leaves are plucked by hand by women carrying baskets on their backs. The leaves are sorted into different classifications, depending on how they will be processed, ultimately becoming green, oolong or black tea.
