Guilty as charged!
Right in front of my nose, huge buildings, occupied by hundreds of families.
Downtown San Paulo, Brazil.
Few blocks from the City Hall, the Stock Exchange, the Central Bank among so many other fundamental, worthy and basic institutions.
In just one of the buildings, 475 families occupies 27 unfinished floors.
Kids play and run.
Clotheslines on the outside of the building, without any protection from falling down and in front of the entire city.
Windows, with breathtaking views, of one of the biggest and most populated cities on the Planet, made of compensated wood or sticks, even at the 27th floor.
People that use strength and organization to impose their reality, to a society that doesn’t care to listen.
Guilty as charged!

This image was taken on 30 August 2016, "2 weeks after the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) launched one of the largest emergency vaccination campaigns ever held in Africa in an effort to keep the deadly disease yellow fever from spreading within the country and internationally. The epidemic had hit Kinshasa, making it the first time an outbreak had spread to a densely populated city. The DRC's Ministry of Health, World Health Organization, and more than 50 global partners collaborated on the complex logistics needed to get vaccine and people to more than 8,000 sites at the same time. The effort required a whopping 10 million syringes, 38,000 vaccine carriers (plus ice packs), and 40,000 vaccinators. Because yellow fever vaccine supplies were so limited, only one-fifth of the normal dose was used, protecting people for one year rather than a lifetime. Nearly 8 million people were vaccinated in just ten days." ~ Paraphrased from Lesley Reed, PATH writer-journalist's article: blog.path.org/2016/10/the-race-to-immunize-a-country-and-...
Assignment for PATH, an international health organisation that work on many different levels in the public health system, from research and development, to vaccinations and maternal health care.
Donated, but unused A/C units at Eleonas refugee camp in the outskirts of Athens. After three years of constant emergency status, the EU and the UN hand over the official responsibility for the roughly 60.000 refugees in Greece to the Greek government.
Since 2015, a complicated network between dozens of NGOs and the Greek authorities has emerged. The EU supported Greece with about 1.5 billion euro for border security and taking care of the refugees in the country - enough money, but a great part of it was not properly used. In some camps, there is a shortage of sanitation facilities, housing containers and other important goods. In other places, there were four new "welcome centers" within one square-kilometer.
Due to the uncertain plans of the government and the fact that the double crisis in Greece is not an international priority anymore, several organisations are leaving the supply of refugees in Greece. How the state wants to replace the know-how of the NGOs, is yet unsure.

One bridge to another.
I could spend a lot of time shooting these architectural masterworks. Alas, it was far too cold to break out my tripod and do any long exposure work on this trip. Just one more great reason to return to NYC!
I was lucky to have Jahrensy and Damian along for the ride on this NYC adventure. See what they have to say about it.

Thanks to my friend Greg I was able to get hired on the spot to cover this event minutes before it was supposed to begin.

Christmas time in New York City!
Fun times, to be sure... but not the same kind of fun as Christmas time in, say, Brazil would be. Sure, there are no Christmas Trees south of the border, but there are plenty of margaritas.

When the so-called Balkan route was closed in 2016, ten thousands of refugees got stuck in the north - a poor region, already considerably struck by the economical crisis. In the 30.000 people town of #Kilkis near Thessaloniki, several natives decided to help the refugees around them anyway. They started a grass roots initiative from scratch, without any help from authorities.
A key part of their work with Omnes is their intense monitoring of the people they take care of. Because they do monthly surveys, they posess precise information about the skills, profession, social situation and special needs of each person. The data - anonymized - is being published openly, which led to less prejudices and more understanding in the community.
Because of this, they were able to get support by the community and to built up a network, providing decent living conditions for the refugee families. In Kilkis, they live in apartments - in a lot of other places in Greece, they are forced to live in isolated camps.
One of the walls in the Omnes office is plastered by information boards (as seen on the picture) - with the number of every apartment and all the important information about the people, who live there.
In addition, Omnes opened up an "inclusion center" in the city, open for every member facing special challenges, like for instance senior citizens who live alone or disabled people. Because most of the refugees are given the feeling of being normal, accepted neighbours, they are more willing to give back to society.
Today, Omnes is constantly taking care of about 550 people. The model was discussed as a positive example of creating better chances for proper inclusion at several conferences in Europe.
